Chapter 120: Chapter 120: A Promise Fulfilled
’She didn’t know what would happen if she angered him. Maybe it would plunge her into a bottomless abyss. He knew exactly how she felt about him, but instead of giving her a straight answer, he just kept orbiting her life. He’d always "coincidentally" run into her, stir up a little trouble, and then walk away completely unscathed, as if nothing had happened.’
’She was a little scared of this side of him. She had already decided to let him go, but every time she saw him, she felt the impulse to just throw herself at him. She didn’t even want to see him anymore, but he provoked her again and again.’
"A stalling tactic? Hah! Are you taking me for a fool, Melody?" Dominic Thorne moved even closer, so close their lips would brush if either of them spoke. Faced with his question, Melody couldn’t answer. She had no idea what to say to defuse the situation. Her mind was a complete blank.
Looking at the dazed, blushing woman before him, Dominic Thorne acted on a strange impulse and kissed her. A long moment passed, and neither of them let go, both seemingly lost in the sweet intimacy of the kiss.
The moment was broken when Dominic Thorne’s phone rang. Its shrill tone pulled them both back to reality. Melody Donovan abruptly pushed him away, her hands hovering in mid-air, uncertain. The taste of him was still on her lips, the faint scent of tobacco from his clothes hung in the air, and her heart was still hammering wildly.
Dominic Thorne answered the phone, clearly annoyed. The call was from his company—apparently, an issue had come up that required his immediate attention.
Putting his phone down, Dominic Thorne frowned at Melody. ’I’m usually not so impulsive,’ he thought. ’This was an exception. And Melody... she’s the biggest exception of all.’
"You’re coming with me to the office," Dominic Thorne said, starting the engine.
"Huh? But I drove here, you don’t have to... Mmph!"
"Say another word and I’ll kiss you senseless." The car shot forward as Dominic Thorne floored it, his irritation mounting. Beside him, Melody Donovan sat quietly in her seat, her head bowed.
「Yates Group」
The afternoon was just as hectic as ever, and the reports were starting to blur together. Summer Lancaster rested her head on her desk for a moment, and a cup of coffee appeared in front of her. She listlessly lifted her head to look.
"Oh, just leave it there, Wayne, thanks!" She assumed it was her assistant, Wayne, who had brought her coffee. He usually made a cup for her around this time to help fight off the afternoon slump.
Hearing no reply from Wayne, Summer Lancaster looked up properly at the person standing there. "Wayne, why didn’t you say— Ah!" Startled, she jerked back. Luckily, her chair rolled with the movement, saving her from toppling over.
"Am I that scary?" Kenneth Yates pulled over a nearby chair and sat down beside Summer.
"I’d say I’m more flattered than scared!" Summer struggled to calm her racing heart. She glanced out of her office. She could feel every employee’s gaze fixed on them, but the moment she looked, they all pretended to be engrossed in their work.
Summer got up and lowered the blinds.
"Hey, did you guys hear? The CEO just came down here holding a cup of coffee."
"Yeah, word’s already spreading through the whole company. And do you know where he took it?"
Hearing the discussion, several other colleagues leaned in closer. "Where?"
"Director Lancaster’s office. And get this—she even closed the blinds. Now, tell me, would you close the blinds if you were just talking about work?"
The entire staff was gossiping about them. Kenneth Yates rarely set foot on this floor—some employees had never even laid eyes on their CEO before. His visit today, however, had caused an absolute uproar.
