Chapter 111: Chapter 111: To Look Cool
Hunger pangs woke Summer Lancaster. Her stomach was growling nonstop, and that, combined with the sharp, tearing pain between her legs, made her so unsteady she could barely walk. ’Kenneth Yates really is a wolf in sheep’s clothing,’ she thought. ’He puts on such a cold, aloof front, like some untouchable god of abstinence, but behind closed doors, he’s as insatiable as a wolf.’
Summer Lancaster went to the living room but didn’t see Kenneth. The kitchen was completely empty. She sighed in resignation, grabbing a glass of water and drinking it down. ’What kind of life is this? The pampered wife of a rich man? I’m so hungry I can barely stand up straight, and there isn’t a single thing to eat in the house. Who would believe this is the life of the wealthy elite?’
Summer Lancaster clutched her empty stomach and headed for the study. His shoes were still there, which meant he was home. If he wasn’t in the living room or the kitchen, he had to be in the study. The moment she pushed open the door, she froze. There he was, wearing black-framed glasses and diligently reviewing a stack of documents. ’A man is most handsome when he’s focused on his work.’ Summer Lancaster was completely mesmerized. She stood in the doorway for almost a full minute, lost in a daze.
"Hey, are you rooted to the spot?" Kenneth knew it was her the moment she entered, even without looking up. But when a long moment passed and she didn’t approach, he glanced up, wondering why she was just standing in the doorway.
She was staring at his face with a vacant expression, not even blinking. The glass of water in her hand was still frozen in mid-air.
Realizing how she must have looked, Summer Lancaster quickly shook her head. She lifted the glass and pretended to take a sip, using it to hide her blushing face while still sneaking glances at him. Kenneth took off his glasses and started walking toward her. Summer, still feigning a drink, looked up and was startled to find him right in front of her. She stumbled back a step, the glass nearly slipping from her grasp, but thankfully Kenneth caught it with his quick reflexes.
"Heh... How’d you get over here so suddenly? You don’t make a sound when you walk." Summer Lancaster retreated, putting distance between them one step at a time while searching for a topic to cover her awkwardness. The words that tumbled out, however, were completely nonsensical.
Kenneth took the glass from her hand and set it on the desk. With his hands in his pockets, he closed the distance to Summer with elegant strides. "What were you spacing out about? You’re not about to faint from hunger, are you?" His handsome brows furrowed slightly, his concern genuine.
The wonderful mood was shattered by Kenneth’s words. Summer’s bashfulness vanished in an instant. Waving a dismissive hand, she walked past him. "You bet I am! I’m so hungry I can’t think straight!" She plopped down brazenly in the chair he’d just vacated, crossed her legs, and put on the glasses he’d just taken off. They didn’t seem to have a prescription, though.
"Why are you wearing glasses if you don’t need them?" Summer took them off and set them on the desk.
"How do you know I don’t?" Kenneth didn’t seem to react, simply leaning back against the desk and looking down at her.
"Because *I* don’t need glasses, and when I put yours on, nothing changes. They’re obviously non-prescription!"
"Hmm..." Kenneth propped his chin on his hand, feigning a thoughtful expression. "To look cool."
The words themselves weren’t the problem, but hearing them from him made Summer Lancaster nearly fall out of her chair. ’To look cool? He said it was to look cool?’ She really started to wonder if something was wrong with her hearing lately, seeing as she kept hearing such strange things.
Summer Lancaster adjusted her posture and sighed helplessly. The man before her still had that same cold and aloof expression. ’Absolutely no one would ever imagine a man like that saying something like that!’
