Chapter 638: Chapter 441: Return to Saxon County
However, it didn’t take long for Zachary to realize what had happened after he agreed to Franklin’s price. But since he had already agreed, to go back on his word now really would damage his reputation. Furthermore, the item was not particularly precious to Zachary, so the deal was settled.
As for the ham they sought, Zachary readily agreed as well, for he had gone to great lengths to prepare well before the disaster, and with the acquisition of the System, this little thing was nothing to him.
After seeing the two off, Zachary lay down on the sofa again, mulling over the events of the past few days. It was only then he recalled how in his previous life, being at the bottom of the survival chain, he was clueless about many things and had muddled through the disasters purely by luck and the proactive help from the Imperial Court.
Now, without any false modesty, at least from what he could see, Zachary had climbed at least to the middle or upper levels in the Capital City. This meant that even if he didn’t actively seek out information, he would still passively receive some from others.
Thinking back to the intelligence about the Prophet he had heard from Gordon’s mouth, Zachary couldn’t tell whether it was true or not. However, considering that Awakeners like him had emerged, who could reach the sky in one step, it wasn’t impossible for a Prophet to appear too.
If the widely spread prophecy was true and a flood disaster was to come again, then should he, like last time, find a tall building to seek refuge in?
Just as he thought of this, Zachary suddenly remembered that due to the earthquake, most of the skyscrapers built before the disaster in places like Pengcheng, as well as Kyoto, had collapsed.
That’s why, if a flood were to occur again, many people would see boats as their ultimate refuge.
Honestly speaking, the city’s proximity to mountains made a difference. If it were like Mountain City, situated atop a range of mountains, there would be no need to worry about floods at all.
Despite multiple disasters, the level of many projects in China now was not inferior to that before the disasters. Although many pieces of machinery could no longer be used, the emergence of Martial Artists and Awakeners perfectly compensated for the reduced efficiency in construction. In fact, due to their agility, Martial Artists were more suited for certain special construction methods than all sorts of machinery.
Logically, since it was known that the flood disaster would happen again, China should also be preparing in advance. After all, with the current infrastructural strength of China, it would not be difficult to rebuild skyscrapers like those that existed before the disasters.
However, during his recent outings, Zachary did not see any construction sites for skyscrapers being built in Kyoto City.
Considering that Kyoto is the Capital City and home to the high-ranking officials of the Imperial Court and their families, if the widely spread prophecy was indeed true, the Imperial Court should have taken appropriate measures quickly, and Kyoto wouldn’t be as calm as it was now.
Yet, when Zachary observed the residents of Kyoto City with his Divine Sense, he found life proceeding as normal, which made him doubt the authenticity of the rumors for a moment.
But then he thought that whether the rumors were true or not didn’t really affect him much anymore. Now, unlike before, when Zachary was in need of many things for cultivation, he had everything, including boats. Thus, he quickly put these issues out of his mind.
Zachary rested at home for two days and successfully delivered the items that others had purchased from him. Then, he was ready to go out for a stroll, for, compared to mining the high-grade ore buried underground, capturing the Undead wandering in the wild was much more convenient.
However, Zachary hadn’t anticipated that, having not gone out for just two days, the situation in the wild had already changed significantly.
Firstly, the number of Undead Creatures wandering in the wild had started to decline sharply.
Although regular weapons did limited damage to most Undead, the armory of the City Defense Army in Kyoto had been upgraded,
especially the firearms in their hands, which had evolved from the original gunpowder ammunition to energy weapons combined with Qi.
The newly introduced weapons were more rightfully referred to as standardized Magic Artifacts rather than firearms.
Although the new firearms could still be loaded with various solid ammunitions, they also had the ability to convert the Qi within the body into ammunition. Moreover, regular nurturing of the firearms with Qi, over a long period, would not transmute them from Magic Artifacts into Magical Weapons.
However, it would comprehensively enhance various attributes of the firearms such as reducing the Qi consumed during firing, increasing the weapon’s durability, and allowing the bullets to travel further, among other benefits.
And one effect, most resembling that of Magical Weapons, was the bond with their owner. As long as one nurtures the weapon regularly, no one else would be able to use it effectively even if they found it. Unless the residual Qi on the weapon is dispelled, anyone else picking up the weapon could, at best, use it only for shooting solid bullets, as their Qi wouldn’t synthesize the energy rounds within the weapon.
However, since they are made from ordinary materials, the top level of a Magic Artifact is, in fact, the limit for new firearms. If one wishes to upgrade their weapon further, replacing the components with better ones is necessary.
Indeed, because of the advent of new weapons, what was once a significant threat to humanity, the Undead, were now easily eradicated by the extermination teams organized by the Imperial Court.
