Chapter 62: The City Doesn’t Know

The morning rush hour in Neo Ashford was a river of suits and uniforms. People flowed along the sidewalks. They held coffee cups. They checked watches. They talked on phones. The sun was bright. The sky was blue. It looked like a perfect Tuesday. Kaito walked against the current. He moved slowly. His eyes scanned the buildings. He did not see the shops. He did not see the signs. He saw the seams. The reality stitches were fraying. He counted them as he walked. One near the bakery. Two by the subway entrance. Three above the convenience store. Four in the alley behind the bank. Five near the park. Six at the school gate. Seven in the Grey District.

Seven active cracks. All within walking distance. All invisible to the crowd. A woman bumped into him. She dropped her phone. She apologized. She picked it up. She walked away. She did not see the shimmer behind her. It looked like heat haze. It sounded like tinnitus. She heard nothing. She saw nothing. She was safe because she was blind.

Kuro said: "They are happy."

Kaito said: "They are ignorant."

Kuro said: "Ignorance is peace."

Kaito said: "It is fragile."

Kaito kept walking. He reached the school gate. The bell rang. Students rushed inside. They laughed. They shouted. They worried about tests. They worried about dates. They did not worry about the entity sleeping beneath the gymnasium. Kaito had sealed it last week. It was holding. For now. Jin walked beside him. Jin looked at the sky. Jin looked at the ground. Jin looked at Kaito. Jin knew. Jin said nothing.

Jin said: "The air is heavy."

Kaito said: "Seven today."

Jin said: "That is high."

Kaito said: "It is rising."

Jin said: "Will you handle them."

Kaito said: "I have to."

Jin said: "I will wait."

Kaito said: "Do not."

Jin said: "I will."

They entered the building. The hallway was bright. The lockers were metal. The floor was tile. It was safe. It was normal. Kaito felt the weight of the cards in his jacket. They hummed softly. They knew the cracks were near. They wanted to hunt. Kaito pressed his hand against his pocket. He silenced them. Ryota met them at the classroom door. Ryota held three cans of juice. He handed one to Kaito. He handed one to Jin. He kept one. He smiled. He was bright. He was loud. He was unaware.

Ryota said: "Did you study for math."

Kaito said: "No."

Ryota said: "Me neither. We are doomed."

Jin said: "You are doomed. I studied."

Ryota said: "Traitor. Protect me."

Kaito opened the can. He drank. The juice was sweet. It was cold. It tasted like sugar. It tasted like normalcy. He looked at Ryota. Ryota was worrying about a test. Kaito was worrying about the end of the world. The contrast was sharp. It was painful. Kaito thought: He should not know. If Ryota knew, he would worry. If he worried, he would not smile. If he did not smile, the light would go out. Kaito carried the dark so Ryota could keep the light. It was a trade. It was unfair. It was necessary.

The day passed. The sun moved. The shadows grew. The cracks pulsed stronger. Kaito felt them in his teeth. He felt them in his bones. He sat in class. He took notes. He listened to the teacher. The words were distant. The hum was closer. Lunch came. Hana sat with them. She told a story. Kaito laughed. It was a real laugh. It was brief. It was hidden. But it happened. Hana saw it. She smiled. She did not ask. She ate her rice. She talked about a movie. She talked about a dog. She did not talk about the shimmer behind the school. She did not know.

Kaito watched her. He watched the way she held her chopsticks. He watched the way she tucked her hair. She was real. She was fragile. She was human. She was worth the seven cracks. She was worth the sleepless nights. She was worth the white hair.

Kuro said: "You are attached."

Kaito said: "I am human."

Kuro said: "Humans break."

Kaito said: "Not her."

Kuro said: "Everyone breaks."

Kaito said: "I will hold her."

School ended. The bell rang. Students left. They went to clubs. They went home. They went to dates. Kaito walked to the Grey District. The sun set. The sky turned purple. The streetlights flickered on. The city changed. The normalcy faded. The danger woke up. The night market was filling. Vendors set up stalls. They hung lights. They cooked food. The smell of oil and spice filled the air. People laughed. They ate. They spent money. They lived. They did not see the seven cracks glowing in the dark.

Kaito stood at the edge. He watched. He waited. He was the wall. He was the keeper. He was the silence. A vendor waved at him. The vendor sold noodles. He knew Kaito. He knew Kaito ate alone. He knew Kaito paid cash. He did not know Kaito fought monsters.

Vendor said: "You want the usual."

Kaito said: "Yes."

Vendor said: "It is hot."

Kaito said: "Good."

Kaito ate the noodles. He stood near the stall. He watched the crowd. He watched the shadows. The first crack opened near the fish market. It was small. It was a drifter. Kaito finished the noodles. He threw the cup away. He walked toward the shadow. No one noticed. No one looked. They were eating. They were talking. They were living. Kaito stepped into the alley. The light faded. The sound faded. The city disappeared. There was only the crack. There was only the card. There was only the work.

Kuro said: "They do not know."

Kaito said: "No."

Kuro said: "Does it matter."

Kaito said: "Yes."

Kuro said: "Why."

Kaito said: "Because they are safe."

Kaito drew the Ace of Spades. The shadow erupted. Kuro formed. They moved toward the crack. The fight was quick. The entity was weak. It was confused. Kuro bound it. Kaito sealed it. The crack closed. The alley was normal again. Kaito walked back to the market. The vendor was still there. The lights were still bright. The people were still laughing. Nothing had changed. Except everything had. Kaito had paid the price. The city had not. Kaito thought: It is fine.

He walked through the crowd. He was invisible. He was alone. He was the only one who knew. He touched his pocket. The cards were there. The weight was familiar. The burden was heavy. He carried it. He would carry it tomorrow. He would carry it until the cracks closed. Or until he fell. The night deepened. The market closed. The vendors packed up. The lights went out. The city slept. Kaito walked home. The streets were empty. The shadows were long. He passed the seven spots. They were sealed. They were quiet.

He reached his building. He climbed the stairs. He unlocked the door. He stepped inside. The room was dark. He did not turn on the light. He walked to the desk. He placed the cards down. He sat down. He opened the notebook. He wrote: Seven cracks. He wrote: All sealed. He wrote: City safe.

He stopped. He looked at the words. They were simple. They were true. They were enough. He closed the notebook. He turned off the lamp. He lay on the bed. He closed his eyes. The silence took him. It was not empty. It was full of the city he protected.

Kuro said: "Rest."

Kaito said: "I will."

Kuro said: "Tomorrow."

Kaito said: "Tomorrow."

Kaito slept. He did not dream. He dreamed of lights. He dreamed of noodles. He dreamed of laughter. He dreamed of a city that did not know. It was a good dream. It was a peaceful dream. It was worth the cost. The morning came. The sun rose. The city woke up. The commute began. The bells rang. The market filled. Kaito woke up. He washed his face. He put on his jacket. He checked the cards. He opened the door. He stepped into the hallway. He walked down the stairs. He walked out into the morning.

The city didn’t know. And Kaito wanted to keep it that way. He kept walking. He did not look back. The shadow followed. The light remained. He was ready. The day began.
