Chapter 108: The Detailed Survey of the Land
Two months later, the survey report finally arrived.
Calling it a report felt generous.
The stack that landed on Ernest’s desk that morning looked less like a document and more like a weapon. Bound folders, rolled maps, mineral charts, field sketches, soil notes, and sample tags covered the entire oak surface until barely a corner of the desk remained visible.
The first volume hit the table with a heavy thud.
Hollen stared at it.
Then he stared at the exhausted surveyor standing in front of them.
Then he looked back at the mountain of paper.
"Is that the report?"
The surveyor gave a tired nod.
"Part one, Master Hollen."
Hollen’s face slowly changed.
"Part one?"
"There are four more volumes being copied."
The forge owner lowered himself into the nearest chair with unusual care.
"I suddenly understand why kings need ministers."
Ernest couldn’t help smiling.
The man standing before them was Mister Hawthorne, the chief surveyor appointed to lead the full geological and resource assessment of the Barony of Teucher. When he departed two months earlier, he had looked like a neat, organized professional with clean boots and a confident expression.
Now he looked like the mountains had personally taken offense at him.
His coat was travel-stained. His hands bore small cuts from fieldwork. There were dark circles beneath his eyes, and the careful calm of a trained surveyor had been replaced by the hollow patience of a man who had slept in tents through too many storms.
Surveying mountains aged people.
Not always in the body.
Sometimes in the soul.
"Thank you, Mister Hawthorne," Ernest said.
Hawthorne gave another nod and placed both hands on the back of a chair, as if standing upright required negotiation.
"We examined approximately sixty percent of the territory in detail. The remaining sections received preliminary assessments based on surface exposure, river cuts, local reports, and ridge formations."
"That much in two months is impressive."
"It would have been faster if the western slopes had roads fit for humans instead of goats."
Hollen nodded with deep sympathy.
"I knew I liked you."
Hawthorne managed a weak smile, but it faded as he looked toward the map case carried by one of his assistants.
"Baron Teucher, there is something I should say before we begin."
Ernest’s attention sharpened.
"What is it?"
The surveyor hesitated, choosing his words with care.
"I don’t think anyone truly understood what your land was sitting on."
The room became quiet.
Ernest leaned forward slightly.
"That good?"
Hawthorne let out a short laugh, though there was little humor in it.
"Better."
By noon, Ernest’s office had turned into a war room.
Maps covered the tables. Cross sections of hills and valleys were pinned across the walls. Geological sketches lay beside topographical surveys, while labeled mineral samples occupied nearly every open shelf and table edge.
Black stones.
Red stones.
Gray metallic fragments.
Pale limestone chips.
Clay samples wrapped in cloth.
Slate pieces marked by district and elevation.
The office smelled faintly of damp paper, soil, and stone dust.
Hollen picked up a black sample from one tray.
"Coal?"
"Coal," Hawthorne confirmed.
The forge owner picked up another dark piece.
"Coal?"
"Also coal."
He picked up a third, stared at it, then narrowed his eyes.
"Please don’t tell me this is coal too."
"It is."
Hollen looked from the sample to the growing collection of black stones arranged across the desk.
"How much coal did you find?"
One of the assistant surveyors answered this time.
"Enough that we stopped marking individual seams and began mapping coal basins."
No one spoke for several seconds.
Coal basin was not a term used lightly.
A seam could supply a village.
A deposit could supply a mine.
A basin could supply a kingdom.
Hawthorne unfolded the largest map first and spread it across the main table. Several assistants placed paperweights on the corners to keep it flat.
Colored markings covered most of the western half of the barony.
Black for coal.
Red for iron.
Green for copper.
Blue for limestone and clay beds.
Thin brown lines marked ridges, river cuts, exposed formations, and suspected underground continuity.
Hawthorne pointed to the black regions.
"These are confirmed coal-bearing areas. The darker markings indicate exposed seams observed directly by the survey teams. The lighter shaded zones show likely continuation based on dip direction, rock layering, and valley exposures."
Ernest leaned closer.
The markings did not appear as isolated dots.
They formed broad bands across hills and valleys, curving with the structure of the land.
That was important.
Very important.
Surface coal was useful, but continuity suggested a larger geological system beneath the soil. If the exposed seams connected underground, then the western side of his barony was not merely coal-bearing.
It was coal country.
"Estimated reserves?" Ernest asked.
Hawthorne exchanged a glance with his assistants.
"We cannot provide exact figures without drilling shafts and conducting deeper surveys."
"Of course."
"But based on the number of exposed seams, their thickness, the continuity of the strata, and the size of the basin..."
The surveyor paused, as if still struggling to believe his own conclusion.
"We believe the western basin alone may contain several hundred million tons."
Silence swallowed the office.
Even Hollen stopped fidgeting.
Several hundred million tons.
Ernest looked back down at the map, and for a moment the room around him seemed to fade.
That was not simply enough coal to feed Helmarte Machine Works.
It was not merely enough to support steam engines or workshops.
That was enough to power cities.
Enough to run railways.
Enough to feed ironworks, factories, foundries, and power stations for generations.
Possibly centuries, depending on extraction rates.
The report did not stop there.
Hawthorne turned to another section and tapped several sample entries.
"The quality is also unusually high."
That pulled Ernest’s full attention back to the present.
"Bituminous?"
The surveyor looked mildly surprised.
"Yes. The majority of the tested samples fall within that classification."
Excellent.
Bituminous coal changed the value of the basin entirely.
Lignite could burn, but poorly.
Anthracite burned hot, but was harder to ignite and less useful for some industrial purposes.
Bituminous coal sat in the practical middle ground that industry loved. It burned hot enough for steam engines and metallurgy, contained enough volatile matter to be useful, and could be processed for coke if the composition was right.
Hawthorne seemed to understand the importance of his next words.
"Several samples also demonstrated strong coking properties."
Ernest looked up at once.
"You’re certain?"
"We repeated the tests three times using samples from different locations. The results were consistent."
For a moment, Ernest said nothing.
Coking coal.
That single phrase changed everything.
Charcoal could support early metallurgy, but it had limits. Forests vanished beneath the appetite of iron furnaces. Fuel costs rose. Production stayed small because the land itself could not grow timber fast enough to feed industry forever.
Coke broke that limit.
Coke had fed blast furnaces.
Coke had built steel towns.
Coke had helped turn island nations into industrial empires.
If his barony possessed reliable coking coal alongside iron ore, then Belfast’s industrial ceiling had just risen far beyond anything he had planned.
Hollen noticed the expression on his face.
"That’s good news, isn’t it?"
Ernest laughed softly.
"That is absurdly good news."
"How absurd?"
"The kind that makes ministers nervous and bankers greedy."
Hollen grimaced.
"I preferred when good news meant selling more soap."
Iron came next.
Hawthorne’s assistants cleared enough space for another map, this one focused on the northern ridges and upper valleys. Red markings clustered heavily along several slopes where streams had cut through the hills and exposed dense, rust-colored stone.
"Magnitude?" Ernest asked.
Hawthorne took a breath.
"Significant."
"That is not a geological measurement."
"No," the surveyor admitted. "But it is the first honest word that came to mind."
He pointed toward the northern hills.
"We identified thirty-seven major iron-bearing formations, with additional minor exposures scattered across the surrounding ridges."
Thirty-seven.
Ernest blinked once.
That was far more than he expected.
Hawthorne continued before anyone could interrupt.
"The majority appear to be hematite. Preliminary testing places iron content between fifty-two and sixty-four percent in the richer samples. Lower-grade material exists as well, but even those remain usable with proper processing."
Fifty-two to sixty-four percent.
That was not ordinary ore.
That was excellent.
In a world still struggling with primitive mining and inconsistent metallurgy, ore of that quality was a gift from the earth.
"What about magnetite?"
"Present, but in smaller quantities. We found traces in the higher ridges, though the hematite deposits appear far more extensive."
More samples came out.
Dense red ore.
Dark metallic stone.
Powder scraped from exposed rock faces.
Each piece was tagged with location, elevation, and estimated vein direction.
The surveyors had been thorough.
Very thorough.
The next hour passed in a blur of resources.
Copper traces in the northern hills, enough to justify deeper exploration but not enough yet to promise a major mine.
Limestone deposits in the southern slopes, conveniently close to possible furnace sites and useful for flux in iron smelting.
Clay beds along river valleys, suitable for bricks, ceramics, fireproof linings, and insulators if refined correctly.
Slate deposits near the western ridges, useful for roofing, flooring, and possibly writing tablets for schools and offices.
Then came lead.
That surprised him.
It surprised Hollen too, though mostly because he had stopped expecting new rocks to appear every five minutes.
One assistant placed several dull gray samples onto the table.
"Lead ore from the northwest section."
Ernest picked one up.
"Galena?"
"Likely."
Hawthorne placed another note beside it.
"There are also silver traces."
Ernest looked up.
"Silver?"
"Small concentrations. Not enough to call it a silver field, at least not from surface samples. But enough to be economically relevant if mining proceeds for lead."
That was interesting.
Very interesting.
Lead had uses beyond coinage and ornament. Pipes, weights, roofing, glassmaking, ammunition, and chemical processes all benefited from it. Silver traces made extraction more attractive, especially in a kingdom where noble and royal interest could shift quickly at the mention of precious metals.
Hollen leaned back in his chair.
"Coal, iron, limestone, clay, copper, lead, and now silver."
"Trace silver," Hawthorne corrected.
"At this point, I no longer trust rocks."
Ernest smiled but kept reading.
The rivers received their own volume.
This one held his attention for nearly an hour.
Unlike many nobles, Ernest did not think of rivers as scenery. He saw flow rate, seasonal reliability, gradient, flood risk, mill potential, transport value, and future water supply.
Three major rivers crossed the barony.
Seven smaller tributaries joined them from upland valleys.
Several sections possessed strong, consistent flow even during dry months, which suggested dependable spring sources in the mountains. Other stretches widened into valley floors that could support future settlements, factories, warehouses, and transport yards.
Hawthorne had included notes on banks, flood marks, soil type, and possible bridge points.
One valley in particular caught Ernest’s attention.
It had a wide floor sheltered between two ridges.
A strong river ran through the center.
Coal lay roughly twenty kilometers west.
Iron deposits sat fifteen kilometers north.
Limestone appeared eight kilometers south.
Timber covered the surrounding slopes.
The terrain was not flat, but it was workable. More importantly, the valley offered enough space to build roads, workers’ housing, workshops, storage yards, and eventually rail lines.
His finger stopped over the marked location.
There.
That was where it would begin.
Hollen noticed at once.
"You found something."
Ernest tapped the map.
"Look at this valley."
The forge owner leaned closer.
"I see a river."
"Coal twenty kilometers west."
Ernest pointed again.
"Iron fifteen kilometers north."
Another point.
"Limestone eight kilometers south."
Then another.
"Timber everywhere around it."
Understanding slowly appeared on Hollen’s face.
"Oh."
"Exactly."
"You’re choosing the location of a factory."
Ernest shook his head.
"Not a factory."
Hollen frowned.
"Then what?"
Ernest looked at the valley marked in ink.
"A city."
The office fell silent.
The surveyors exchanged glances.
Hollen stared at him.
"You’re planning a city."
"Eventually."
"Ernest."
"Yes?"
"You have never built a city before."
"Technically, neither has anyone else until they do it the first time."
Hollen closed his eyes.
"I hate when your nonsense has logic."
Hawthorne cleared his throat before the conversation could spiral further.
"There is one more matter."
Ernest looked up.
"What is it?"
The chief surveyor hesitated longer this time.
That alone made Ernest pay attention.
Hawthorne unfolded a smaller map and pointed toward the far western mountains, near an area marked with steep ridgelines and sparse settlement notes.
"This section here. We found something unusual."
"Unusual how?"
"We’re not entirely certain."
That was not the answer Ernest expected from a man who had just spent hours classifying half a dozen mineral deposits with great confidence.
Hawthorne continued.
"The local villagers have known about the stones for generations. They avoid using them because they are difficult to break, too heavy for ordinary construction, and useless as fuel."
"Black stones?" Ernest asked.
"Dark gray to black, but not coal."
One assistant placed a sample onto the table.
It landed with a heavy knock against the wood.
The stone was dark gray with a subtle metallic sheen. It looked dull at first glance, but when Ernest picked it up, his hand immediately recognized what his eyes had not yet confirmed.
Heavy.
Very heavy.
Far heavier than ordinary rock of that size should have been.
He turned it over slowly.
The surface was dense and fine-grained, with faint streaks of darker material running through it.
He scratched it gently with a steel point.
The color beneath remained largely the same.
No rust-red powder like hematite.
No flaky black residue like coal.
No dull gray softness like lead.
His engineering instincts began assembling possibilities faster than he could speak.
Manganese?
Tungsten?
Chromite?
Nickel-bearing ore?
Something else? Each possibility carried weight.
Some were useful. Some were strategic. Some could change the future of metallurgy entirely.
Hawthorne watched him closely.
"You recognize it?"
Ernest did not answer immediately.
He looked down at the sample.
Then toward the mountain range marked on the map.
Then back again.
"Maybe."
"What is it?"
Ernest remained silent for several moments, careful not to let excitement outrun evidence.
"If I am correct," he said slowly, turning the stone in his palm, "this may be one of the most valuable discoveries in the entire kingdom."
Hollen looked horrified.
"The most important rock?"
"Possibly."
The forge owner covered his face with one hand.
"Of course."
Ernest barely heard him. His thoughts had already moved far beyond the office.
Everything depended on materials. Steam engines, railways, ships, armor, machine tools, precision instruments, industrial chemistry, and even war were all limited by what a nation could dig from the ground and refine into something useful. Coal provided heat. Iron gave structure. Copper carried electricity. Limestone fed furnaces, while clay became bricks, ceramics, and insulators. But certain rare minerals opened the door to the next stage of industry. They could make steel harder, machines stronger, tools sharper, and weapons far more dangerous.
If his suspicion was right, then somewhere beneath the far western mountains of his barony lay a resource that could make coal and iron feel ordinary by comparison.
That was dangerous.
Not just valuable.
Dangerous.
Because resources did not remain quiet once people understood their worth.
Outside the office windows, the factory continued its usual rhythm. Steam hissed through pipes. Workers shouted across the yard. Somewhere in the distance, a telegraph receiver clicked softly, carrying messages through copper wire as if the world had always worked that way.
Inside the office, Ernest stared at the dark metallic stone resting quietly in his palm.
For the second time in two months, the ground beneath his feet had become far more valuable than he had first believed.
And this time, he was not entirely sure whether that was a blessing or a warning.
