Chapter 106: The Future Signal Corps
The first group arrived on a rainy Tuesday morning.
Ernest had been reviewing production reports from the insulator workshop when a knock echoed through his office.
"Enter."
The door opened and one of the administrative clerks stepped inside.
"Master Ernest, the Royal Army delegation has arrived."
Ernest looked up from the paperwork spread across his desk.
"Already?"
The young man nodded.
"They arrived nearly an hour ago and are waiting in Conference Hall Two."
That was considerably faster than expected.
The demonstration in the capital had taken place barely eight days earlier. Apparently King Edward had wasted absolutely no time turning royal enthusiasm into military orders.
Ernest gathered several notebooks from his desk and stood.
"How many officers?"
"Twenty-seven officers and engineers, sir."
He paused.
"Twenty-seven?"
The clerk nodded again.
"They also brought soldiers."
"How many soldiers?"
"Forty-two."
Ernest blinked.
That wasn’t a delegation.
That was the beginning of an institution.
Conference Hall Two had originally been designed for negotiations with merchants and factory managers.
Today it looked more like military headquarters.
Uniforms filled the room.
Blue coats trimmed with gold thread. Brass buttons polished to a mirror shine. Boots that somehow remained spotless despite the rain outside.
Several officers stood around maps spread across tables while others examined telegraph equipment that had been arranged for demonstration purposes.
The moment Ernest entered, every conversation stopped.
Twenty-seven pairs of eyes shifted toward him.
Most looked curious.
Some looked skeptical.
A few looked openly doubtful.
That part no longer bothered him.
By this point he had grown accustomed to older men questioning whether someone who looked barely old enough to shave should be teaching them engineering.
Reality usually solved that problem quickly enough.
A tall officer stepped forward from the crowd.
He appeared to be in his late thirties with short black hair and the posture of a man who had spent most of his life around soldiers.
He offered a salute.
"Colonel Marcus Whitmore of the Royal Army Engineering Corps."
Ernest extended his hand.
"Ernest Teucher."
The colonel hesitated briefly at the unfamiliar gesture before shaking it.
"His Majesty instructed us to cooperate fully with the Royal Telegraph Project."
His eyes drifted toward the equipment arranged behind Ernest.
"Though I admit that most of us still don’t understand how any of this actually works."
Several officers nodded immediately.
One captain folded his arms.
"No offense intended, Baron Teucher."
"None taken."
"We’re soldiers."
He gestured toward the telegraph apparatus.
"That looks considerably closer to alchemy than engineering."
Laughter spread around the room.
Ernest smiled.
"That makes two of us."
The room laughed again.
The atmosphere relaxed almost immediately.
Good.
People learned faster when they stopped worrying about appearing ignorant.
An hour later Ernest stood beside a large blackboard while twenty-seven military engineers occupied rows of seats facing him.
He began with a single question.
"What wins wars?"
A captain raised his hand first.
"Superior numbers."
Another officer disagreed.
"Superior weapons."
"Logistics," someone near the back offered.
Colonel Whitmore crossed his arms.
"Discipline."
Interesting answers.
All of them were correct.
None of them were complete.
Ernest picked up a piece of chalk and drew two squares on the board.
"Imagine two armies."
He added labels beneath them.
"Same number of soldiers."
Another line.
"Same weapons."
Another.
"Same training."
The officers watched quietly.
Ernest turned back toward them.
"One commander receives reports about enemy movements within minutes."
He pointed toward the first square.
"The other receives the same reports three days later."
Silence settled across the room.
Finally Colonel Whitmore spoke.
"The first commander wins."
"Why?"
"Because he reacts first."
Ernest nodded.
"Exactly."
He wrote several lines onto the blackboard.
Speed of information becomes speed of decision.
Speed of decision becomes speed of movement.
Speed of movement becomes victory.
The room grew noticeably quieter.
Soldiers understood initiative.
They understood reaction times.
They understood the advantage of arriving first and forcing the enemy to respond.
The telegraph wasn’t replacing muskets.
It was replacing delay.
The following weeks quickly settled into routine.
Lectures occupied the mornings while afternoons were devoted to practical exercises. Evenings disappeared beneath evaluations, troubleshooting sessions, and more than one emergency repair caused by enthusiastic officers deciding to dismantle equipment they did not fully understand.
The engineers proved to be remarkably quick learners.
Once they accepted that electricity followed predictable rules rather than magical whims, curiosity rapidly replaced skepticism.
Captain Robert Hale developed an obsession with battery chemistry.
Lieutenant Samuel Mercer became fascinated by electromagnets.
One engineer named Thomas dismantled an entire receiver because he wanted to understand how it worked internally.
Unfortunately, he discovered that understanding how something came apart did not necessarily mean understanding how it went back together.
Hollen eventually found the unfortunate lieutenant surrounded by hundreds of tiny components and looking as though he had just witnessed the collapse of civilization.
The forge owner sighed.
"Another one?"
Ernest nodded.
"Third this week."
Hollen looked toward the terrified officer.
"You broke the lightning machine?"
The lieutenant looked horrified.
"It wasn’t intentional."
"That’s what they all say."
The military engineers gradually separated into specialized groups.
Some focused on battery maintenance.
Others specialized in line construction and repairs.
Several became signal operators while others concentrated on field deployment procedures.
Ernest encouraged the process.
Wars destroyed plans.
Always.
A communications network that depended entirely upon a handful of experts would fail the moment those experts died, retired, or simply happened to be somewhere else when disaster struck.
Knowledge needed distribution.
Systems survived through redundancy.
The same principle applied to factories.
And kingdoms.
Three months after training began, the first large-scale field exercise finally took place.
Two companies of soldiers marched into the countryside outside Helmarte accompanied by wagons loaded with poles, batteries, wire, and telegraph equipment.
Colonel Whitmore stood beside Ernest overlooking the operation.
The soldiers worked efficiently.
Holes were dug.
Poles rose into position.
Insulators were attached.
Copper wire slowly stretched across fields and roads as the temporary line advanced kilometer by kilometer.
By sunset the first military field line stood complete.
Eight kilometers.
Not particularly impressive by future standards.
Remarkable by present ones.
Colonel Whitmore watched the final connection being secured.
"How long would mounted couriers require to cover this distance?"
"Perhaps two hours."
The colonel nodded.
"And the telegraph?"
Ernest smiled.
"Try it."
Whitmore approached the key.
His message was simple.
FIELD STATION READY STOP
Several seconds passed.
Then the receiver clicked.
The operator translated immediately.
MESSAGE RECEIVED STOP
The colonel stared at the machine.
Then at the wire.
Then back at the machine again.
Finally he looked toward Ernest.
"I don’t like this."
Ernest blinked.
"What?"
"It feels unnatural."
Laughter erupted from nearby officers.
Whitmore shook his head.
"I understand artillery."
He pointed toward the distant field guns.
"I understand bridges."
Another gesture.
"I understand fortifications."
Finally he pointed toward the telegraph equipment.
"I do not understand how thoughts are traveling through metal."
The receiver clicked again.
The operator looked up.
"Field Station requests permission to begin dinner preparations."
Whitmore stared for several seconds before laughing.
"God help Valoria."
The military implications became obvious almost immediately.
Landing forces could remain connected to naval squadrons offshore.
Supply depots could communicate with advancing armies.
Coastal headquarters could coordinate with commanders operating hundreds of kilometers inland.
King Edward had originally envisioned communication.
What he received was command and control.
The difference was enormous.
One evening Ernest stood beside Colonel Whitmore overlooking another exercise when the older officer pointed toward a telegraph wagon parked below.
"His Majesty mentioned the possibility of operations in Valoria."
Ernest nodded.
"How would this be deployed during a campaign?"
That was an excellent question.
Ernest crouched beside the map spread across the table.
"The first station remains near the landing beaches."
His finger moved inland.
"As the army advances, engineering teams follow behind the front lines installing temporary poles."
Another movement.
"Field headquarters remain connected to coastal command while naval support remains connected to both."
Whitmore frowned.
"And if the army advances too quickly?"
"The lines advance with it."
"And if the enemy cuts the wire?"
"Repair crews."
The colonel nodded slowly.
"If necessary, critical sections can be buried underground."
Whitmore immediately looked up.
"Underground?"
"Harder to sabotage."
"Expensive."
"Very."
"But possible."
The officer studied the map for several moments.
"You’ve thought about this already."
Ernest smiled slightly.
"A little."
That was perhaps the largest understatement he had made all year.
Entire wars in his previous world had been fought over communications infrastructure.
Railways and telegraph lines had become objectives every bit as important as cities and fortresses.
Information eventually became terrain.
As autumn approached, a new organization officially appeared within the Royal Army.
The Royal Signal Corps.
Twenty-seven engineers formed its foundation.
Dozens of recruits followed soon afterward.
Their insignia depicted a crowned lion standing above crossed lightning bolts.
The symbolism was not subtle.
Royal authority carried by electricity.
King Edward approved the design immediately.
Prince Cedric reportedly called them the Army of Lightning.
To everyone’s surprise, the nickname spread.
One afternoon Colonel Whitmore entered Ernest’s office carrying several official documents.
He placed them on the desk.
"His Majesty approved it this morning."
Ernest looked down at the title written across the parchment.
Royal Signal Corps Charter.
Official establishment authorized by the Crown.
The first military communications branch in human history.
For several moments neither man spoke.
Finally Whitmore looked toward him.
"Do you understand what you’ve done?"
Ernest glanced toward the factory windows overlooking Helmarte.
Smoke rose from chimneys.
Steam drifted into the sky.
Workers moved between workshops while machinery continued turning somewhere below.
Progress never really stopped in this place.
Finally he answered.
"I introduced a telegraph."
Colonel Whitmore shook his head.
"No."
He tapped the charter resting on the desk.
"You changed how armies think."
Outside, somewhere in the distance, a telegraph receiver clicked.
A tiny sound.
Almost insignificant.
Yet Ernest suspected that future generals would one day consider communication every bit as important as artillery or rifles.
And if war truly came to Valoria, the first soldiers marching south would not merely carry muskets.
They would carry wire.
Because for the first time in history, an army intended to invade another nation while dragging its nervous system behind it.
