Chapter 39: The Arrival of the Imperial Pawn
The Arrival of the Imperial Pawn
Without another moment’s hesitation, Victor’s eyes settled on the glowing prompt suspended before him.
[Would you like to summon your follower?]
"Summon."
His answer came without the slightest trace of doubt.
He quietly awaited the arrival of the legendary Imperial Pawn—a figure whose name had once echoed across forgotten battlefields and whose footsteps had become the stuff of ancient legend.
The instant the command left his lips, the familiar voice of the Eternal Legacy System resonated within his mind.
[Ding! Summoning successful!]
[Epic-grade follower ’Elder Black’ is on his way!]
The golden system interface shimmered gently before breaking apart into countless specks of radiant light. They drifted through the air like glowing dust before fading into nothingness.
Silence returned.
Victor remained where he stood, his long black hair resting over the shoulders of his dark robe, its majestic golden dragon embroidery catching the soft light. His expression was calm, but a thoughtful glimmer flickered deep within his golden eyes.
A possibility had already taken shape in his mind.
When the Eternal Legacy System had rewarded him with Damien Salvatore through the Legacy Investment, Damien hadn’t appeared out of thin air. Instead, he had naturally existed within the Salvatore bloodline, as though destiny itself had quietly guided his birth long before Victor ever arrived.
This summon... would likely follow the same principle.
The system didn’t create lives from nothing.
It merely nudged the invisible threads of fate.
Every reward entered his world through a chain of events so seamless that no one would suspect outside interference. To everyone else, everything appeared perfectly natural, as though it had always been destined to happen.
Victor couldn’t help but smile.
A faint curve touched the corner of his lips.
"This system grows more considerate with each passing day."
His voice carried quiet appreciation rather than excitement. By now, very little managed to surprise him.
During the past several days, he had silently observed every member of the Salvatore Family through his overwhelming spiritual perception.
Nothing inside the ancestral grounds escaped his notice.
Every fluctuation of Spiritual Energy...
Every successful breakthrough...
Every hidden talent...
Every subtle change...
One after another, they had been quietly committed to memory.
At present, excluding Victor himself, the family’s strongest expert remained Max Salvatore.
With unwavering determination and relentless effort, Max had already reached the Seventh Layer of the Celestial Gate Realm.
As for the newly promoted Guardians, even the strongest among them had only reached the peak of the Arcane Meridian Realm.
Once they consumed the medicinal pills Victor had prepared, they would likely step into the First Layer of the Celestial Gate Realm.
For an ordinary family...
Such strength would already be enough to inspire awe.
Many clans would spend generations chasing achievements of this level without ever reaching them.
But Victor’s ambitions had never been ordinary.
His vision extended far beyond Aurelia City.
Far beyond this kingdom.
Far beyond this continent.
The Salvatore Family possessed gifted descendants.
It possessed extraordinary opportunities.
Its foundation grew stronger with each passing day.
Yet despite all of that...
One weakness remained impossible to ignore.
Its lack of true high-level combat power.
If a terrifying expert were to descend upon Aurelia City today, the younger generation simply wouldn’t have enough time to grow into the pillars they were destined to become.
Time...
That was the one thing they still lacked.
Victor had originally planned to recruit powerful experts from outside the family to serve as Guardians.
Their loyalty could be nurtured through trust, rewards, and shared purpose.
Even so...
There would always be uncertainty.
Because no matter how carefully one judged another...
The human heart remained the most unpredictable thing in existence.
And just as that thought crossed Victor’s mind...
The Eternal Legacy System had already provided a far more satisfying answer than he could have imagined.
Unexpectedly...
The Eternal Legacy System had already solved that problem before he even acted.
Followers.
Or more precisely...
Imperial Pawns.
Anything granted by the Eternal Legacy System had never disappointed him.
Not once.
Every reward had exceeded his expectations.
Naturally, Victor held equally high expectations for Elder Black.
Absolute loyalty.
Extraordinary strength.
And an unimaginably ancient past.
None of those qualities could be measured using ordinary standards.
Moreover...
The Imperial Pawn he had just obtained was clearly no ordinary subordinate.
That much was obvious not only because of the Epic Grade evaluation.
It was written directly within his description.
"A pawn..."
Victor quietly repeated the words to himself.
"A pawn that once trampled forbidden lands beneath its feet..."
His golden eyes narrowed slightly.
"Interesting."
A trace of genuine curiosity surfaced within his usually calm expression.
Who exactly had Elder Black been?
If an all terrifying expert were to descend upon Aurelia City today.
If even a pawn possessed such an astonishing history...
Then how terrifying had those Eternal Emperors truly been?
And what kind of battlefield required eight hundred veterans to fight until almost nothing remained?
The questions briefly crossed Victor’s mind.
Yet only briefly.
He had never been someone who became distracted by curiosity alone.
Answers would eventually reveal themselves.
Strength came first.
Everything else came second.
His expression quickly returned to its usual calmness.
Without another word, Victor slowly closed his eyes.
The room once again fell silent.
His breathing became steady.
His consciousness immersed itself within cultivation.
Everything else was secondary.
Only strengthening himself was the true foundation.
