Chapter 174: Took Advantage
Rebecca’s POV
The room was quiet, save for the soft, steady sound of breathing.
I woke up slowly, my eyelids feeling incredibly heavy. But as the fog of sleep began to clear, the first thing I noticed was a strange, intense warmth wrapping around me. I wasn’t cold. In fact, I felt completely safe and tucked away.
I slowly opened my eyes.
My breath caught in my throat. Right in front of my face was a strong, chiseled jaw, a shadow of stubble, and dark eyelashes resting against pale skin.
It was Alpha Kaden. He was fast asleep, his face looking softer and younger than I had ever seen it before.
My heart did a violent flip. My eyes widened in sheer panic, and I carefully lifted the heavy duvet and looked down.
We were both completely naked. My skin was pressed directly against his warm, bare chest, and his heavy arm was draped securely over my waist, locking me tightly against him.
I gasped, quickly pulling the blanket back up to my chin as my mind began to spin.
No. No, please, no.
Like a dam breaking, the memories of last night came rushing back, crashing into my brain. I remembered the sudden, terrifying fire burning in my veins. I remembered the suffocating heat of the silver collar, realizing my body was going into its very first heat. I remembered the door clicking open, and Alpha Kane stepping inside, carrying me to the bath to try and cool me down.
And then...
My face burned with a deep, agonizing flush of shame as the rest of the memories hit me.
Kaden.
I had begged for him. I had screamed his name. And when he finally came into the room, I hadn’t pushed him away. I had pulled him down. I had kissed him like a starving woman, tearing his shirt, riding his hips, and begging him to put out the fire inside me.
"Oh, Goddess," I thought, my chest tightening with pure horror. We had sex.
Even worse, my body had loved it. Every single touch, every rough thrust, every growl against my skin—I had craved it all. I felt sick to my stomach. How could I have let this happen? How was I supposed to look him in the eye now?
I had to get out of here. Right now.
I carefully grabbed his heavy wrist, trying to lift his arm off my waist without waking him. I held my breath, slowly sliding my body backward, trying to slip out from under the duvet.
I had barely moved an inch when his arm suddenly tightened like an iron band.
Before I could even scream, Kaden yanked me back against his chest with effortless strength, burying his face into the crook of my neck. His eyes remained closed, a sleepy, husky rumble vibrating against my skin.
"Are you planning on running away?" he murmured, his voice thick with sleep. "After taking advantage of me last night?"
My jaw dropped. The sheer audacity of his words snapped me out of my panic and drove me straight into anger.
"I did not take advantage of you!" I yelled, my voice cracking as I struggled against his grip.
Kaden let out a low, teasing scoff. Slowly, his eyes blinked open. His piercing green gaze stared at me. He looked down at me, a highly amused, mocking smile tugging at the corner of his lips.
"Really?" he asked, raising an eyebrow. "You have completely forgotten? Should I refresh your memory, Rebecca?"
My face burned hot, the flush of embarrassment spreading all the way down to my neck.
"I don’t need you to refresh anything!" I snapped, my hand pressing hard against his bare, muscular chest as I tried to push myself away. But he didn’t budge. "Let go of me, Alpha Kaden. I mean it."
Instead of releasing me, his grip on my waist tightened, pulling me so close that my thighs brushed against his. The smirk on his face only grew wider, his green eyes dancing with mockery.
"That’s Kaden to you," he murmured, his voice still low and husky from sleep. "And if I remember correctly, last night you weren’t using my title at all. You were screaming my name. Over and over again."
"Stop it!" I cried, trying to struggle against his hold. "Just... shut up! I was in heat! I wasn’t in my right mind, and you know it. You took advantage of me!"
Kaden let out a dark, amused laugh. He easily pinned my wrists to the mattress beside my head, locking me down beneath his heavy frame.
"Took advantage of you?" he scoffed. "Let’s get one thing straight, Rebecca. I tried to stop you last night. More than once."
My lips parted, but he continued before I could speak.
"You wouldn’t listen. You tore my shirt open. You climbed on top of me. You threatened to go to my brother if I didn’t give you what you wanted." His jaw tightened at the last sentence, a flash of jealousy darkening his green eyes. "So don’t wake up this morning and put all of this on me just because you can’t stand the fact that, for one night, you wanted me."
His words sliced through me.
"I was in heat!" I snapped. "I wasn’t myself!"
Something flickered across Kaden’s face, but it disappeared so quickly I almost thought I had imagined it.
"Maybe," he said coldly.
His grip on my wrists loosened slightly.
"But last night, for the first time, I didn’t have to force you to stay near me. You came to me."
There was something strange in his voice now. Something almost vulnerable.
But then his expression hardened again.
"And whether you regret it or not, Rebecca, it happened."
His words hit me hard. As much as I hated hearing them, I couldn’t undo what had happened. Last night was real, and the memories burning through my mind proved it.
"But last night was special, wasn’t it?" Kaden sneered softly, leaning down until his lips almost brushed my ear. "Usually, I have to force you to submit. But last night? You climbed on top of me. You wrapped those legs around my waist and begged me to fill you."
"Stop..." I whispered, closing my eyes tightly as the shame threatened to swallow me whole.
"And the best part?" Kaden whispered, his breath hot against my skin. "When I told you to stop, when I warned you that you would regret this in the morning, you threatened me. You told me if I didn’t touch you, you would go to Kane."
My eyes snapped open, staring at him in horror.
I said that?
My stomach twisted into a sick, painful knot. I had threatened him with his own brother just to get him inside me. The reality of what the heat had done to my pride was suffocating.
Kaden’s grip on my wrists tightened slightly, his eyes narrowing as he watched my expression shatter.
"You belong to me, Rebecca," he growled. "Never mention my brother’s name in my bed again. Heat or no heat, I don’t care. You are mine, and I am never letting you go."
I frowned, the sting of his words hardening into cold defiance. "Let me go," I spat.
Instead of getting angry, Kaden actually smiled. It was a lazy, dark grin that made my stomach do a dangerous flip. He leaned down and placed a soft, lingering kiss on the tip of my nose.
"We are going out tonight," he said, his voice smooth and commanding. "I’ll send a dress up for you."
With that, he finally released my wrists and climbed out of the bed. I pulled the heavy duvet tight against my chest, watching him walk across the room completely naked. He didn’t have a single shred of shame. My eyes tracked him as he grabbed his underwear and slid into his tight blue jeans, his back muscles flexing with every movement.
Before he left, Kaden bent down and picked up his torn black shirt from the floor. He held it up, shaking the ruined fabric with a mocking chuckle, throwing me a look that plainly said, See what you did?
I instantly snapped my gaze away, my face burning. He let out a low scoff, clearly enjoying my embarrassment, and walked out of the room, shutting the heavy door behind him.
The moment the lock clicked, a wave of raw, shaking fury exploded inside me. I thrashed against the mattress, grabbing a pillow and screaming into it at the top of my lungs. I kicked my legs, wrapping the duvet tightly around my body as if I could scrub his scent off my skin.
"Fuck it! Fuck... it!" I screamed to the empty room, tears of frustration stinging my eyes.
Just then, a soft knock landed on the door.
"Rebecca? It’s me," Stephanie’s voice called out quietly from the hallway.
I swallowed the lump of anger in my throat and cleared my throat. "Come in."
The door opened, and Stephanie stepped inside. She took one look at my flushed face, the messy, tangled sheets, and the torn clothes scattered across the floor, and her eyes widened. I clutched the blanket tighter around myself, feeling completely exposed and embarrassed.
"What on earth happened in here?" she asked, rushing over to the side of the bed.
"I went into heat," I whispered, burying my face in my hands.
"Heat?" Stephanie gasped, her jaw dropping. "But Rebecca, how is that even possible? Your wolf is locked away by the silver collar."
"I know, I know!" I cried, shaking my head. "But it seems the collar only blocks my wolf, not my body’s natural cycle. It was burning me from the inside out. I was dying, Stephanie."
Stephanie let out a long, heavy sigh, her eyes dropping to the torn shirt on the floor. "So... you and Alpha Kaden did it."
"Yes," I admitted, the word tasting like poison on my tongue. "And the worst part is, he has no idea what this means. It didn’t click for him at all. He doesn’t realize that we might actually be mates." I let out a bitter, dry laugh. "I am just happy he is enough of a fool not to clock it. Stephanie, we cannot be second-chance mates. I won’t allow it. I hate him."
Stephanie looked at me, her expression turning deeply serious. She reached out and placed a comforting hand on my covered shoulder.
"Rebecca, think about it," Stephanie said softly. "If he wasn’t your true mate, he couldn’t have calmed your heat down completely. Yes, any strong Alpha male might have relieved some of the physical pain for a little while, but they could never quiet the fever entirely. Only a fated mate’s touch can do that. You are peaceful now because of him."
"No," I insisted, stubbornly pulling the blanket higher. "I refuse to believe it. It was just a fluke. My wolf is locked. There is no way."
Stephanie stared at me for a long moment, knowing there was no point in arguing with my denial. She sighed, letting her hand drop, and her face suddenly grew incredibly serious.
"Well," Stephanie said, her voice dropping to a sharp whisper as she glanced toward the door. "I actually came up here because I just uncovered some shocking findings."
