Chapter 94: Whatever it takes
Adam
We were in public, and with the amount of bodyguards she brought with her, the last thing I wanted to do was spend time talking to her for so long.
But upon hearing that there was something on Carmen, of course I had to sit down as I settled on the bench, placing the dog between us as I fed him snacks to keep him obedient.
It wasn’t my dog, but it was useful for the duration of the conversation as I petted the dog while speaking to Vanessa with a smile on my face.
"What evidence?" I asked her, only for her to shake her head as her gaze was fixed on the dog too, petting its fur.
"Can you help me leave and take me somewhere safe? My mother too!" she asked, and of course I instantly nodded my head.
Doing such a thing was easy, and if I no longer needed her, then there was no reason for her to stay.
"I can! You should trust me!" I responded, meeting her gaze as silence settled between us for a moment before she finally pushed her hand into her pocket and pulled out something.
A small drive, which she passed over to me, which I had clearly seen was connected to her phone at first.
"That drive has an audio file where Carmen admits to being a mafia and related to the cartel! You can use that against her!" she told me, but I was already shaking my head.
Yes, it was something, but against someone as strong as Nico, who had ties to the Galiass cartel, and Carmen, who was the heir of Castillo, it was nothing.
"Yes, it’s useful, but we both know that evidence—real evidence—is more important! Records of her dealings, even a video or an audio file with them would be better than a conversation with you!"
"Words are fickle! She could simply say that she was drunk while she was speaking, and do you know what would happen to you when she finds out?" I asked her, needing her to understand exactly the situation she was in at that moment.
"You can’t leave yet!" I told her, and I could see the anger mounting in her chest as she glared at me with all the anger she could muster in her gaze.
She was angry, and it was an anger I could understand.
"You’ll be safe! Keep looking for evidence, and the moment you swipe something solid, I’ll guarantee your safety!" I told her, not seeing any reason to continue staying there as I got to my feet.
With bodyguards watching her, the last thing I wanted was for them to take notice of the blond-haired man that kept meeting her.
"So that’s it? You can’t do anything, and you expect me to do your work for you?" she snapped in anger, and I sighed, aware that her expression was no longer as neutral as I needed it to be.
Pulling on my dog, I simply lowered my head and softened my tone as I got ready to leave.
"If you were in my position, what would you do..." I asked her before turning around to leave, jogging away with the white furry dog on the leash running right beside me.
I understood her fears, but at the same time, I couldn’t cater to it. Unless I could put them in prison or have them locked up, taking her away would simply put her in danger, something I didn’t want to do.
Moving faster, I jogged through the pack, heading round and round, doing my best to ensure that whosoever was tracking me lost sight of me.
At the same time, I found a means to return the dog I had borrowed and volunteered to walk, with a smile before heading back.
This time around, I left the park and still continued jogging instead of heading into my car. My steps were faster than usual as I raced through again, making sure that whosoever was following me would lose track of me.
Something I needed to be wary of if I was going to keep my life.
After walking through supermarkets and changing jackets, with a hood on my face, I walked back to my car, which took another hour.
Getting in, I still made sure to drive around for a full hour before I finally headed home, when I was confident that I was not being followed, aware that one single slip up and I could end up dead like my brother.
I had just driven into my driveway when I noticed a red car that was starting to get on my nerves. Zyren, my brother, was in my house and had been visiting more often than usual.
I parked the car and got out, heading in, not surprised to see him sitting in front of the monitoring station I had set up.
He glanced at me before glancing at the live audio as he began to speak. "You met up with her! Were you careful?" he asked me, and I let out a sigh, tossing my keys on the table.
"I’m always careful!" I responded with a sigh as I stared at him, even as he nodded his head. It was clear that he wasn’t leaving anytime soon.
"She wanted out," I continued, speaking. "Gave me an audio with Carmen admitting her ties to the cartel."
"That’s not good enough!" Zyren sighed, shaking his head, and I chuckled as I met his gaze.
"Weren’t you the one that wanted us to be careful and not use her?" I asked, only to watch him shrug his shoulders as he spoke.
"They killed Simon! I’ve thought it over, and I want revenge!" he said, getting on his feet with a resolute look in his eyes that I very much understood.
Nodding my head in understanding, I spoke again. "I’m thinking of giving her more bugs, but even then it might not be admissible in court," I sighed, realizing that while we were constrained by the law, criminals could get away with doing illegal things.
"I’m going to urge her to get more files from the study. Even if it’s simply the financial records, it’s bound to be filled with illegal dealings. A small win is still a win!" I told him, watching Zyren nod in agreement.
"Sure! Whatever it takes!" he responded, heading to the kitchen as I instantly followed him, the last thing I needed was for him to burn my kitchen down.
