Chapter 84: A Mafia War

Carmen

The last place I expected him to take me was to the shipping dock and towards the part where ships and yachts were packed. We got on as I wondered why we were suddenly on the sea.

Still, I trusted the process and we headed further in while I leaned over the edge, enjoying the feel of the breeze in my hair and the smell of the sea. It was nice.

My father had many yachts but not once had I gotten on them since I’d been too busy, staring out at the sea as I felt Nico move to stand right beside me.

"We took too little bodyguards," I reminded him, hoping that wherever we were going wasn’t too far. While raising my eyes to the sky, I wondered if it would be overkill for the enemy to use missiles.

"You don’t like the view?" he asked, slightly changing the topic in a way that grated steadily on my nerves.

"You wanted to show me the sea?" I asked him even as the yacht continued to soar through the waters. "The view is nice," I added, not believing that that was simply what he wanted me to see.

Nico didn’t immediately speak, standing beside me with his hands folded together in front of him, a faraway look in his eyes as he spoke.

Gesturing ahead, he said, "Those ships... the government has already begun shipping in the equipment needed to build the structures offshore. As far as I know none of my construction companies have been contacted, which only means one thing."

"Definitely not me! I would know about it if they did," I said, something Nico should already be aware of since he still had access to my books, something he can’t exactly use against me at that moment.

"This means that one of the mafia dons is already working with them," Nico said.

My eyes widened in shock as I gasped. "Vito? It has to be Vito. He’s the only one that’s yet to be attacked," I said with a sneer on my face, recalling why I hated him even more than John Gotti.

He was short and a bit on the heavy side and had this nauseating expression in his eyes that made me want to pluck them out.

"Most likely! But it also means that they already got access," Nico continued, tightening his intertwined fingers together as he leaned against the railing in his white shirt and loose black pants.

"We can no longer allow it to continue. So to prevent it, we’ll have to take over Vito’s territory and Gotti’s," Nico said, stretching out his right hand and staring at it almost like he was trying to block out the sun with it.

A low chuckle slipped out of my mouth, turning darker the moment I realized that he wasn’t actually joking. He meant every word that fell out of his lips as he glanced at me.

My eyes fluttered steadily in shock. "You... You can’t be serious!" I told him, holding his gaze as I realized why he brought us on the ship with the guards underdeck and nothing but the sound of the wind around us.

I took a long breath in while staring at his face, shocked by the fierce determination I saw there as I clenched my hands tighter around the railing.

Gritting my teeth together, I slowly let out my words, trying to maintain a facade of calm. "You are not completely serious, are you?" I asked him again, hoping that there was indeed a chance that he was joking.

"You would... would start a war?" I asked, my words coming out louder—much louder than they should have—as I fixed my eyes on him, backing away by a few steps to really look at him.

"You might be stronger than Gotti and Vito, but they have territories under them. They have money, power, men, and connections just as much as you do. Before everything settles there will be bloodshed!" I told him, hating that I needed to state the obvious.

To be honest, bloodshed wasn’t what I cared about, but the fact that it would also draw the attention of the authorities to us. Father was always of the opinion that remaining under their radar was the best thing to do, and Nico was saying we should announce the entire thing to the world.

"We just have to find the enemy and kill them!" I told him, only to hear a bitter chuckle slip out of his lips as he fixed a dark gaze on me with shining blue eyes.

"...and how do you propose we do that? You don’t think I’ve tried?" he snapped, his voice a bit louder than usual, which was enough to show just how serious Nico was.

Pointing straight at the ships we could see far in the distance, he began to speak with so much fervor I could feel the depth of his anger coiling straight up my spine.

"...with the government contracts they’ve managed to solely acquire, the amount of money they’ll generate would be beyond anything we’ve ever seen. Authorities? They would buy them all! By the time that is done, do you think there would be anywhere we could go that they wouldn’t be able to find us?"

"Bombing my car? They could simply pay enough assassins and ship them down into the city with contraband weapons that would easily take out a mansion."

"...We play nice and leave two loose ends, they will take advantage of it!" Nico said, his voice laced with so much anger it was clear that he had thought about it long enough to have made his decision.

Still, I simply stared at him with an expression of shock on my face, trying to take in all that I was being told, turning my gaze back to the city and the ships that I could indeed see in the distance.

Oil was a very essential resource, even more so since it wasn’t something the country of Gorinth had in excess, not to mention the states and cities.

The fact that it had been discovered itself was still a well-kept secret, only known to certain circles.

I myself would have been unaware without Nico informing me, which meant that Gotti and Vito also most likely didn’t know.
