Chapter 27: The Basic Quality of a Qualified Warrior
"Do not get happy too soon."
Kaia slid her blade back into its sheath, the motion so clean it looked like a perfectly cut frame from a film.
"Who told you that joining Antares Command means you can immediately go out on field missions and kill Voidbeasts?"
She walked up to Joren. Her tone was flat, yet it carried authority that allowed no argument.
"Our missions usually involve Beast Tides or high level Voidbeasts. Only those who have reached Rank Two Warrior, or shown Rank Two combat power, are qualified to enter the combat sequence and take field missions."
"Then what am I supposed to do?" Joren asked.
"Cultivate," Kaia said lightly. "Before you break through to Rank One Warrior, you are not going anywhere."
"Stay at the base and cultivate [Solar Crucible Method] properly."
Joren opened his mouth, ready to argue.
Then he met Kaia’s unmoving eyes and swallowed the words back down.
This woman was not easy to deal with.
And she was right.
His current strength was still not enough.
With surprise attacks and system points, he had barely killed a Rank Three Gale Fiend Wolf. Even then, the wolf had already been wounded and worn down by Jazz and the others.
If he ran into a Rank Three Voidbeast at full strength, he would probably be finished.
"Fine."
Joren sighed, looking as if life had lost all meaning.
At that moment, Tavian and Arlen, who had been hiding far away, finally shuffled over.
Whether it was the Gale Fiend Wolf or the people from Antares Command, none of them were existences the two dared provoke.
Especially after seeing that Joren really might join Antares Command, Tavian’s mind started moving again.
If he could cling to this thigh, who in the wilderness would not give him some face in the future?
"Well... Joren?"
Tavian rubbed his hands together, his face piled with a flattering smile.
That face, usually fierce enough to scare people, now looked like a blooming chrysanthemum. A little ridiculous.
Joren glanced at him.
"What?"
As for these two men who bent whichever way the wind blew, he did not dislike them much.
But he did not exactly like them either.
Tavian pointed at the enormous Gale Fiend Wolf corpse on the ground.
The fur, bones, claws, and fangs were still worth a great deal.
Rank Three Voidbeast materials were hot goods on the black market.
"Joren, about this trophy... you cannot exactly carry it with you to report in, right?"
Tavian tested the waters carefully.
Joren paused.
True.
"You have a channel?"
"Yes! Absolutely!" Tavian slapped his chest. "Leave it to us. We guarantee a good price for you!"
Joren narrowed his eyes slightly and looked Tavian up and down.
"What is the handling fee?"
Tavian waved both hands at once.
"No fee! Not a single cent!"
"If you give us a little help in the future when there is a chance, that will already be a huge favor."
Arlen echoed from the side.
"Right, right! Free service. Guaranteed satisfaction!"
Their little abacus was clacking loudly.
Getting a connection with a rising star of Antares Command was the real long term business.
Joren nodded and took out the battered phone from his pocket, the screen already cracked.
"But I will say the ugly words first. The market prices for these materials can be found online."
"I will check."
Cold sweat ran down Tavian and Arlen’s backs.
"Do not worry. If I dare skim even one cent, may I get bitten to death by a Voidbeast the moment I step outside!"
"As soon as it sells, I will transfer the money to your account immediately!"
Joren nodded in satisfaction.
"Good sense."
After that, Joren handed over the materials from the Voidbeasts he had killed earlier as well.
He dusted off his hands and turned back to Kaia.
She did not seem disgusted by Joren’s habit of scraping every possible profit from a situation.
There was even a trace of approval in her eyes.
Wasting resources was shameful.
Knowing how to use everything was the basic quality of a qualified warrior.
Kaia raised her wrist and looked at the precision tactical watch on it.
"The mission is complete. We need to return to headquarters immediately and report. Your enlistment procedures will also have to be handled there."
After saying that, Kaia pointed toward the enormous shadow stretching between heaven and earth in the distance.
At the end of their sight, beneath the gray sky, a towering wall stood.
That was [The Absolute Barrier].
A super defense line built by humanity over a hundred years, poured from endless steel and blood to hold back the invasion of Voidbeasts.
"There is a supply point beneath The Absolute Barrier. Military transport vehicles pass through there."
Kaia continued.
"We will return at full speed. Wait for you at Outpost Two under The Absolute Barrier."
In her understanding, Awakened Warriors overwhelmed Mortals in physical function, endurance, and speed.
At full speed, she could easily exceed eighty kilometers per hour and keep it up for a long time.
Jazz and Alar were a little slower than her, but at least they would not hold her back.
"Fine."
Then Joren’s vision blurred.
Kaia shot out like an arrow leaving the string.
In the blink of an eye, she was already a hundred meters away, leaving only a cold figure behind.
The three of them were shockingly fast.
They dragged long trails of dust across the wilderness and quickly moved away.
"Wait. Who said I cannot keep up with you?"
The pale blue system panel that only he could see instantly appeared on his retina.
[Host: Joren]
[Mental Force: 100 Rank One Psionic Master]
[Combat Rank: Mortal 20/20]
[Bloodstars: 260]
[Talent: Bladeborn Frame Green]
[Currently plunderable: Lithe Form Green, consumes 100 Bloodstars]
Without any hesitation, Joren gave the command in his mind.
"Plunder!"
[Ding! Plunder successful!]
[Congratulations, Host. New Talent obtained: Lithe Form Green]
[Talent: Lithe Form]
[Grade: Green]
[Entry Description: Your weight does not seem to have changed, but the heaviness of your body has disappeared. You can weave through dense traffic, and as long as you run fast enough, death cannot catch you.]
[Passive Effect: Host’s base movement speed increases by 100 percent, flexibility increases by 100 percent, body suppleness greatly increases, and jumping height doubles.]
[Active Effect: Windriding. Consume stamina to forcibly ride the surrounding airflow. For a short time, movement speed increases sharply by 100 percent, and short distance low altitude gliding and a second jump become possible.]
"Holy shit..."
He looked into the distance.
The three trails of dust were already about to vanish at the edge of his sight.
Joren bent his knees slightly.
Bang!
His whole body shot forward like a fighter jet launched from an aircraft carrier.
