Chapter 75: The Edge
Ren could feel it every time he cultivated now.
The edge. The ceiling he had hit weeks ago, except it didn’t feel like a ceiling anymore. It felt like a wall that was starting to crack. Every cultivation session pushed energy into a foundation that had nowhere left to grow, and instead of simply wasting the excess, his seed had started doing something new. It was pulling inward, compressing, tightening itself into a denser and denser core as if it was preparing for something that hadn’t happened yet.
He ran a quick check during his evening session.
Status: Ren Valis.
Pathway Level: Germination Stage — Peak (Saturated).
Transition threshold: active.
Seed status: compression phase initiated. Internal density increasing. Early indicators of stage-transition preparation detected.
Note: The seed is approaching Sprout readiness. Transition will not occur through cultivation alone. Genuine pressure catalyst required. Do not attempt to force the breakthrough — premature transition risks foundation damage.
’Transition threshold active,’ Ren thought. ’It wasn’t saying that a week ago.’
The seed was getting ready on its own. Compressing, preparing, building toward the moment when Germination would end and Sprout would begin. But it couldn’t make the jump by itself. It needed a push — real pressure, real danger, the kind of stress that told the body evolve or break.
The corruption zone had brought him to the edge. Now he needed something to push him over.

Kaia felt it too. She had been restless for days, the same impatient pull she had started sending after the foundation hit saturation. But tonight the feeling was different. Less impatient, more focused. She was paying attention to the compression happening inside the seed as if she was watching it carefully, waiting for the right moment the way a gardener watches a bud that’s about to open.
’You can feel it coming,’ Ren thought.
A warm pulse. Yes.
’Any idea when?’
A gentler pulse. Patient, this time. Not yet, but close.
He pulled up OPTIMIZE and reviewed his Sprout checklist one more time.
Sprout Breakthrough Requirements:
Genetic materials: Three compatible resources needed.
Current: Crimson Vitality Bloom (87%, purified, ready).
Required: two additional high-compatibility materials.
Status: not yet acquired.
Integration catalyst: Life-and-Death Beetle (Rare Substance, dual-law). Status: Spatial Storage, viable. Recommend integration during or immediately after breakthrough for maximum effect.
Pressure catalyst: genuine physical/energetic stress event. Status: pending. Cannot be simulated.
Advisory: Host’s seed compression rate suggests breakthrough window will open within 1-2 weeks. Acquiring remaining materials before window opens is strongly recommended.
One to two weeks. That was the window. After that, the compression would either push through into Sprout with the right catalyst or stall and start losing momentum. He needed two more materials and a moment of real pressure, and he needed them soon.

The next morning, Selene gave him both.
She stood at the front of Room 3-C with a map on the screen behind her. It showed a section of the Greymist Stretch that Ren hadn’t seen before — deeper than where they had gone during the first field trip, marked with orange and red hazard indicators instead of the yellow ones they had trained in.
"The Alliance has requested a survey of the deep Greymist zone," Selene said. "A team was supposed to handle it last month, but the corruption density readings came back higher than expected and they pulled out. The Alliance wants a Bloodline Plant Lord team to do the survey instead, because BPLs can purify corruption energy that normal cultivators can’t process."
She looked at the group.
"This is not a training exercise. This is a real mission, contracted through the Alliance, with genuine threat levels. The deep zone contains Tier 1 upper-range and possible Tier 2 corrupted organisms. The energy density is significantly higher than anything you’ve experienced. The timeline is three days."
Cassian raised his hand. "When you say ’possible Tier 2,’ how possible are we talking?"
"Possible enough that the last team pulled out rather than find out."
Cassian lowered his hand. "Cool."

Ren looked at the map and felt two things happen at the same time.
The first was practical. Deep corruption zone. Higher-tier beasts. Intense energy pressure. That was exactly the kind of genuine stress event his seed needed to trigger the Sprout breakthrough. The System had said the catalyst couldn’t be simulated — it needed real danger, real pressure, the kind of moment where his body decided that evolving was the only way to survive. A deep-zone mission with Tier 2 threats was exactly that.
The second was a quiet pulse from Kaia. Not impatient this time. Ready. The seed inside him was already responding to the idea of the deep zone, tightening its compression another fraction, as if it could smell the pressure coming and was leaning toward it.
And the deep zone would have materials. Stronger mutations, higher corruption density, rarer compounds. The two remaining resources he needed for the breakthrough might be waiting in those orange-and-red sections of the map.
’This is it,’ Ren thought. ’This mission is where it happens.’
He looked around the room. Cassian was studying the map with the serious expression he wore when things got real. Yuelan was already calculating combat scenarios. Iris was reading the hazard indicators. Lyra’s face was set with the same determined look she had worn during every challenge that scared her and that she refused to back down from. Kaelen was studying the map without expression, but his energy was running sharp and ready.
Lin Yueying caught Ren’s eye across the room. She didn’t speak. The look she gave him said: the deep zone is old Valis territory. Be ready for what you find.
Vesper was watching Mistwhisker. The void-cat’s ears were up, her violet eyes fixed on the map as if she could already sense what was waiting in those deeper sections.
Selene turned off the screen. "We deploy in forty-eight hours. Prepare accordingly."
Ren leaned back in his chair and let the decision settle. Two days. Then the deep zone. Then whatever was waiting for him on the other side of Germination.
The edge was close. And the fall on the other side was going to change everything.
