Chapter 58: Deeper

They broke camp at dawn and moved further into the Greymist Stretch.

The change was immediate. The outer zone had been unsettling — wrong colors, odd silence, mist that didn’t move. The deeper zone was worse in every measurable way. The trees here were massive, their trunks swollen to twice normal width, bark split open in places to reveal a dark red growth underneath that pulsed with slow, rhythmic energy. The ground-level mist was thicker, reaching up to their knees, and it carried a faint smell that Ren could only describe as burned sugar mixed with something rotting.

The mutation was everywhere. Vines hung from the canopy in thick curtains, some of them twitching when the group passed close. A cluster of mushrooms growing on a fallen log had caps the size of dinner plates and glowed a faint, sickly orange. An insect the size of Ren’s fist crawled across a tree trunk, its shell dark and ridged with corrupted energy lines.

Cassian looked at the insect and said, very quietly, "Nope."

Selene pushed them harder from the moment they started moving. No more gentle orientation drills. She had them running actual field operations — scouting routes through dense undergrowth, establishing and breaking camp positions under time pressure, combat readiness drills where she called threats at random intervals and expected the group to form up in under five seconds.

The group was getting better at it. Ren could feel the difference from just two days ago. Cassian and Yuelan moved through the forest like they belonged there now, their footing sure, their reactions fast. Iris had stopped hesitating during threat calls — her tactical mind had caught up with her body, and her decisions came quicker. Lin Yueying handled every exercise with the same calm efficiency, as if the corrupted forest was simply a different kind of room to sit quietly in. Even Lyra was moving more confidently, her energy work cleaner and more instinctive with every hour.

And Ren was improving in ways he couldn’t fully hide.

The daily field combat was sharpening him. His optimized techniques, refined by OPTIMIZE for this exact environment, were being tested against real threats in real conditions, and the gap between training-hall performance and field performance was closing fast. His footwork on the uneven ground was tighter. His reaction time had dropped. The way he read threats and called warnings had gone from "good awareness" to something that looked a lot like genuine combat experience.

Because it was. The Hollowroot Realm had given him that, and the corruption zone was building on it every day.

The first encounter of the day came mid-morning. A pair of corrupted reptiles — thick-bodied lizards about two meters long, with armored scales and energy crackling along their spines. They were faster than the wolves and tougher. Tier 1, low range.

SCAN.

Target: Corrupted Spineback Lizards (2). Tier 1, low.

Mutation: heavy. Armored scales resist standard physical strikes. Energy discharge from spine can cause channel burns at close range.

Weakness: underbelly is unarmored. Eyes are sensitive to bright energy.

Ren relayed the key information quickly — "Armored on top, soft underneath, don’t get hit by the spine discharge" — and the group moved.

Yuelan went for the left one. She feinted high, drew the lizard’s energy discharge, dodged under it, and hit the underbelly with a rising strike that flipped the creature onto its back. Kaelen finished it with a cold, precise stomp. Two moves. Done.

The second lizard was trickier. It lunged at Cassian, who blocked the bite but got shoved backward into the undergrowth. Ren stepped in from the flank, struck the creature’s eye with a quick, sharp energy burst, and when it flinched he dropped low and drove an uppercut into the exposed belly. The lizard went down. Iris followed up with a finishing strike before it could recover.

Total time: about fifteen seconds. Cleaner than the wolf fight. Faster. The group was learning to fight together without being told.

Selene watched from the back. She said nothing, but Ren caught the small nod she gave before writing her notes.

After the fight, Eira checked the group for spine-discharge burns. Yuelan had a small energy mark on her forearm — the discharge had grazed her during the feint. Eira treated it in under a minute.

"These will get worse the deeper we go," Eira said, applying a cooling patch. "The corruption enhances their energy output. A spine discharge from a higher-tier corrupted reptile could cause serious channel damage."

"Great," Cassian said. "Something to look forward to."

Vesper was crouched near the tree line with Mistwhisker. The void-cat’s ears were rotating, tracking sounds deeper in the forest. "There are bigger things in here," Vesper said. "Mistwhisker can feel them. Not close yet, but we’re heading toward them."

They pushed on through the afternoon. More encounters — a group of corrupted insects that attacked in a swarm and had to be driven off with wide energy sweeps, and a single large wolf-type creature that was bigger and meaner than the pack from the first day. Kaelen handled it alone, which said something about either his confidence or his need to prove he didn’t need the group.

Ren kept running SCAN on the plants they passed. The deeper they went, the more interesting the readings got. Corruption levels were higher, but so were the mutation qualities. Several plants showed genetic compounds that SCAN flagged as potentially useful for Bloodline Plant Lord cultivation. One tall, dark-stemmed flower with crimson leaves made the scanner light up with a compatibility rating he hadn’t seen before.

He marked its location in his memory and kept walking. Tomorrow he would come back for it.

By evening, they set up camp in a new clearing deeper in the forest. The wards went up, the fire was lit, and the group settled into the routine that was already starting to feel normal. Eat, rest, cultivate, watch the trees. 𝕗𝐫𝚎𝗲𝘄𝐞𝕓𝐧𝕠𝘃𝕖𝐥.𝐜𝚘𝚖

Ren sat by the fire and felt the difference in his body. His channels were cleaner from the day’s filtration work. His combat reflexes were sharper from real fights on real ground. His energy management was better from hours of maintaining partial filtration while moving and fighting. Every day in this zone was worth a week in the training hall.

’I’m getting stronger,’ he thought. Not in a dramatic, world-shaking way. In a practical, daily, one-step-at-a-time way that added up fast when you had a System optimizing everything and a corruption zone providing the pressure.

Kaia pulsed warmly. She was getting used to the zone too. Still uneasy, but working. Learning. Growing alongside him.

Tomorrow he would go after that crimson-leafed flower. If SCAN was right about the compatibility rating, it might be the first real step on the road to Sprout.

Author’s Note: Deeper into the zone, harder fights, faster growth. Ren’s found a plant that might matter for his Sprout progression. He goes after it next Chapter. Thanks for reading!
