Chapter 163: Devil Horns
As soon as Erin left the shower, the girls left for the VR room.
"Whenever I fight with Quinn, it would sometimes give me additional EXP, and the system said that I could get EXP from the beasts you may kill," Erin explained, "Ever since I became a vampire, its harder to get any substantial EXP from fighting people in Power Fighters, but with this in mind, I can grow stronger."
Layla chuckled, "So you’re just using me to make yourself more powerful?"
"I am," Erin dryly replied back.
Layla frowned.
Then Erin added, "But this should help make you stronger as well. Experience with fighting people will help you in combat."
Layla bit her tongue. She wanted to say that she already had a lot of experience with fighting other people, but at the same time, she could feel that the animal meat she ate wasn’t fully agreeing with her. Having Erin around would help her peace of mind, just in case something were to happen.
’Damn, maybe I should’ve waited for tomorrow,’ Layla thought.
They arrived at the gaming room, and Erin paid for both hers and Layla’s games for a few hours.
"Wait, but what if I had other plans today?" Layla quickly asked, noticing how much time Erin bought.
"This is your reserved time, you don’t have to use it all at once," Erin clarified, "Also, make an account for yourself so you can join in fights."
Once they had their new beast gear scanned by a machine attachment, the girls entered a pair of pods next to each other. Getting Layla on the same game with Erin took a little bit of troubleshooting as this was her first time officially playing Power Fighters, and not using Logan’s private servers.
After they figured it out, Layla had logged in and found herself in that same similar white space. Joining her was a strange woman with white hair and a crystaline blue romper.
"Uh, did it work? Is that you Erin?"
Erin nodded, "This is my skin. You should try customizing your own."
Tilting her head, and squinting at Erin’s in game appearance, the design was reminding her of a particular character from an old movie. She never saw the movie of course, only in brief passing, so she couldn’t say for sure if it was actually intentional.
"Anyways, there should be a setting for team battles," Erin explained, "I first want to test if the system will acknowledge the family bonus while we’re in here."
"Oh? Now this would be an interesting work around," the system said, "It could even..."
The system’s voice trailed off, making Erin wonder what it was going to say.
’You mind finishing that sentence?’Erin demanded.
"Nothing. I was realizing it wouldn’t work anyways."
While Erin was trying to get more information out of the system, Layla was working on her in game avatar.
She didn’t spend too much time customizing herself, quickly scrolling through the free items available for players. Most of them were pretty cheesy and out there, and a lot of the nicer outfits cost credits, so she chose a basic black mechanic suit to go along with the long black hair she selected, and giggled when she saw a free pair of red devil horns.
’I’ll add it, just because.’
She didn’t bother customizing her face as she’d rather just get in the game and start fighting.
Once she was done, Layla twirled around to fully showcase her design to Erin, "Now we match! I’m wearing black, and you’re wearing light colors."
Erin stopped talking to the system to look at her roommate, and nodded approvingly. Before she could say anything, Erin received two notifications from Sam and Nate asking to join her party.
’Oh right, last time I talked to them was back before—’ Erin’s eyes widened, ’That was before the red portal planet. This better not be a bad omen, I’m going to an orange portal planet tomorrow.’
She selected yes, and the two appeared in the white space alongside them.
"You’re here! You’re finally here after god knows how long," Nate cried, "The moment I saw you were online, we scrambled to the gaming pods and play so we could catch you."
"He misses you," Sam translated.
"I more than missed you, I—" Nate was in the middle of saying when his jaw dropped noticing the other girl in the room, that being Layla.
The moment Nate stopped talking, Sam sighed, and facepalmed. He already knew what was going to happen next.
"I think your headband is pretty devilishly sexy, who are you?" Nate flirted with a confident smirk.
Layla blushed, blinking several times.
Then, with a delayed reaction, "W—what!?"
She genuinely didn’t expect someone like Nate to pop up out of nowhere, then try flirting with her all within the same minute. It caught her completely by surprise.
"Hey!" Erin blurted, then pointed at Nate accusingly, "Get your grubby hands off of her, she’s mine—understand blockhead?"
Nate glanced between the two girls, then mentally ran the numbers. He thought so hard that Erin swore she could see the steam coming off his mental gears.
"Oh, OH!" Nate quickly bowed, "I’d like to apologize, I wasn’t aware you two were..."
"... Were what?" Erin narrowed her eyes and raised an eyebrow.
"Just ignore him," Sam said, "Are you teaching another person how to play Power Fighters?"
"We were about to try out fighting as a team," Layla said, "I got some new equipment I want to test out."
"That explains the new armor," Sam noted, then examined Layla’s new bow, "Interesting gear, what tier is it?"
A grin appeared on Layla’s mouth, clearly proud, "Oh you know, king tier."
The two boy’s jaws dropped.
"You’re joking right?" Sam said, flabbergasted, "How were you able to afford such a nice bow?"
Layla and Erin briefly glanced at each other, knowing.
"Erin haggled us a good deal," Layla half lied.
"Well, now I’m excited! How about we test out our new gear and fight?" Nate suggested, "We’re two dudes, you’re two gals, and Erin owes me a fight. It works out perfectly."
