Chapter 155: Explain Yourself

Ever since Garret ran from his friends on planet Caladi, he was left with major conflicting feelings on whether or not his choice was the right one. If he had stayed, then he wouldn’t have been the one to abandon his friends in their time of need, but at the same time, he was smart enough to know that staying meant dying.

So, after running for his life, he hid in Caladi’s wide desert, surviving off of pocketed food pills, and praying that the dalki wouldn’t find him. After about 2 days, he was found by a group of travelers, and taken in by the nearest shelter where he eventually recuperated, and sent back to military base 2.

However, without any of his old friends, he was beyond distraught, lacking direction. No longer having them by his side, he had to put his dream of reaching the top on hold.

So to suddenly become teammates with someone who his friends had fought against his own was shocking. Even if Garret and Peter didn’t fight, it would undoubtedly be hard to explain himself.

"Huh, you know him, Peter?" Sarah asked, tilting her head.

"You attacked my team!" Peter pointed out.

Garret looked away, ashamed, but then remembered something.

"Hey, your name is Peter, right?"

Peter just glared at him, and didn’t respond. His fists clenched tightly. With Cia by his side, Peter felt confident enough to push back against being a doormat.

"Look, I’m sorry about attacking your team back then," Garret began, "But there might be something you want to know about them."

"Why would I care what you think?" Peter spoke in a low tone.

With that, Garret decided to keep his mouth shut.

Clearing his throat, Micheal put on a wide smile, trying to ease up the tension, "Well, with our new team set up, we should get to know everyone’s abilities!"

"Not to interrupt, but what are we going to do about our 5th member?" Fex casually asked.

They thought about who they knew enough to let join their group. The problem was that whoever would join wouldn’t be someone who knew about their secret. Fex and Erin were vampires, Layla was a ghoul, and Quinn had a system connecting him to Erin. It would be hard for anyone to break into their group now.

"Hey, I saw you only had 4 people here, can I join?"

Immediately, everyone turned towards the direction of the speaker, and saw a tall, blonde boy with green eyes, and swept back hair. They all knew who this person was, and they all had mixed reactions towards him.

Layla felt defensive towards Vorden, immediately wanting to get between him and Erin, a low growl raising in her throat.

’He hurt Erin. I can’t let him on the team!’ she bitterly thought.

Quinn was having similar thoughts as well, albeit in a different direction. He didn’t know a lot about this Vorden person other than the fact that they met briefly before the incident. He seemed nice enough back then, but it was like he became a different person when fighting against Erin.

’I don’t really know if we can trust him, but,’ Quinn eyed the rest of the room, ’we might not have a choice. We need a 5th member, but ultimately, its up to Erin to decide that. She was the one who was hurt by him the most.’

Everyone turned to Erin, all expecting her to say no to Vorden, or even outright reject him. They knew her to lead her team like a military commander, and she didn’t seem to take kindly to lackluster team members.

With a straight face, Erin gave her response.

"Fine. You can join."

"No way!" Layla shouted, then gestured to him, "You’re letting him onto the team?! How can we even trust him?"

Hearing her discuss him like as if he wasn’t there made Vorden’s eye twitch, but he did his best to keep his cool.

"Oh she’s gonna be a problem," Raten commented in their head.

Taking in a deep breath, Vorden ignored him.

"No it’s fine, I should apologize anyways. It was my fault," he said with a reassuring smile, "I’m sorry for going too far. You see, I trained pretty intensely with my family back home, and when fighting against Erin, I felt like she was strong enough to take me on in a full on fight. I should’ve realized that we were only sparring sooner."

"Me, him and Leo have been taking lessons after class to help him learn self control," Erin added, "And you guys know I’m strong enough that someone like him wouldn’t be a real threat."

With Erin’s reaction being the way it was, it was hard to argue against her. She was the one who was harmed against him, and yet, she didn’t seem upset about it.

Layla, however, decided to keep a closer eye on Vorden.

"Anyways, since I’m new to the group, how about we talk about what abilities we have?" Vorden asked.

In his mind, Vorden was thinking that it would’ve been very important for him to know what their abilities are, but then he came up with a different idea.

"Actually, how about I do a quick demonstration?"

He took his hand out towards Quinn’s direction, "Your ability is earth, correct? If we touch, then I can demonstrate my ability properly."

Quinn took his hand for a second, then Vorden took a step back.

He cracked his neck, pumped himself up, before lifting his hands palms down. Immediately, several pillars behind him shot up, then he placed them back into the ground with a gleeful look to his face.

"How’s that? Now you guys would definitely want to tell me what you can do."

While Vorden copying Quinn’s ability was fine, it would be harder to explain for someone like Layla who currently didn’t have an ability, or even Erin who was supposed to not have one either. They couldn’t even lie and say they didn’t have one as their watches clearly displayed numbers that weren’t 1s.

"Oh I see, you have some sort of copying ability," Fex said with a smirk, "How about you try copying mine, I’m sure that’ll go well."

Fex took his hand out, and Vorden took it. Strangely, there was a pause, as Vorden’s face shifted into confusion. Everyone watched as Vorden remained in physical contact with Fex, and he laughed, trying to brush it off.

"Just so you know, I’m flattered, but you’re just not my type," Fex joked.

However, Vorden didn’t seem to hear him, as this was the first time he had ever encountered a situation like this.

"... Why can’t I copy your ability?"
