Chapter 737: Morning with My Jealous Wives
By morning, the rain had stopped, and the blood moon faded into the distant skies, leaving only the brilliant sunlight. A lingering grey smoke remained above the outpost, blocking parts of the sun while drifting from the southern barracks.
The surviving floodlights finally died, leaving the courtyard covered by a dull morning haze.
Nikolai hadn’t slept.
He walked between rows of bodies covered beneath dark sheets, reading the names written across small pieces of card placed upon their chests.
Some were soldiers he recognised.
Men whom he’d met the night before, or in the past. Some who had shared drinks with his father and grandfather in the past while carrying out their duties for the family.
Although others might be strangers.
They still died protecting this outpost under the Volkov banner.
’Damn it!’
Nikolai stopped beside the body of a young Fenrir whose shocked face remained in his death. His throat had been torn apart, leaving the fabric beneath his head soaked almost black. "You fought well..." He swiftly squatted down, sweeping his fingers to close the eyes of the warrior, before sighing.
This loss felt too grave.
The card resting against his chest carried a single name.
Mikhail Orlov.
Twenty-three years old.
Nikolai crouched and pulled the sheet higher, covering the man’s bloodstained head.
’One hundred and thirty-four...’
Here, each death possessed a face, a name and people waiting somewhere for their return.
Footsteps approached from behind.
Selene stopped beside him, carrying two cups filled with something warm. Her golden hair remained damp, and she had changed into a clean shirt taken from the emergency stores, though dried blood still clung beneath her nails.
"You should rest."
Nikolai accepted one of the cups.
"So should you."
"Mhm..." She slowly brushed her hair back, revealing her pale neck, with two deep marks from earlier. "I managed to get a few hours’ rest, but you..."
"Ah, I get it..."
Selene stared at him until he drank.
The bitter taste of coffee filled his mouth, stronger than usual and burnt along the edges. He welcomed the heat spreading through his chest.
"How’s my dad?"
"He’s stabilised for now, thanks to him listening to your mother on the phone. He finally accepted the medicine and treatment. But his chest, his ribs and organs still need time to recover."
Nikolai held back his smile, knowing that recovery might be detrimental.
"What about your dad, and Dimitri?"
Selene dropped beside Nikolai, her heat spreading the moment their shoulders touched. He could feel her soft mounds pressing against him without a bra. "Well, Dad is a fool. They managed to remove the spears, but the barbs tore and damaged the muscles in his shoulder, which will affect his future combat ability."
"T-That’s good..."
Her red eyes lingered upon his face before Nikolai looked back towards the dead.
Selene moved closer and slipped her hand into his.
"Thanks for helping my father... even after everything that has happened."
He shook his shoulders at her words before chuckling back, "There’s no need for thanks. We’re family now, right?"
Nikolai raised her hand and kissed her fingers.
"I know."
She rested her head against his shoulder.
"But I wanted to."
They remained together for several moments, facing the covered bodies as soldiers continued searching through the collapsed barracks.
Every few minutes, another body joined the rows.
Nikolai finished the coffee and handed the cup back to Selene.
"It looks like the next few days will be dangerous."
"Do you need my help?"
Selene’s question made him pause, his mind travelling back to the night just a few hours earlier: ’How can I ask my wives to face such dangers...?’
"If I need your help, I will make sure to ask, Selene."
"Mhm..."
Nikolai glanced towards the damaged building.
One side of the roof had collapsed, and the windows had shattered during Alucard’s final attack. Several support beams had been placed around the entrance to stop the remaining structure from falling.
"It’s a little comforting this place managed to keep standing."
Selene released a faint laugh, then rose beside him and offered her hand.
"It should survive long enough for the meeting at least, fufu."
Nikolai glanced at the cracked upper floor, where several workers were removing broken glass and damaged sections of the roof.
"Well... we can thank the engineers for their hard work then, but don’t push yourself, Selene."
"Haha, what are you going to do if Nikita finds out how sweet you’ve been to me?"
"Hmmm, would you tell her?"
He wrapped his arm around her back as their bodies pressed together, the subtle scent of Selene’s sweat lingering in his nose as she leaned against his shoulder with more weight.
"Never~"
The pair crossed the courtyard together.
Most of the wounded had been moved beneath large emergency tents. Medics rushed between rows of beds, carrying blood packs, bandages and whatever medicine had survived the destruction of the medical building.
Some soldiers were awake.
Others remained completely still beneath thick blankets.
’They looked completely devastated.’
Though some smiled at him, a lot lowered their heads when they passed. He couldn’t help but swallow his words as they approached the main building.
Some stared at him with exhausted eyes, as if waiting for him to explain whether their sacrifice had achieved anything.
Nikolai couldn’t offer them an answer.
’We survived.’
It was the only thing he could tell himself.
Yet after seeing the bodies outside, those words no longer felt enough.
A familiar roar sounded from the treatment area.
"I said I can walk!"
Nikolai turned his head.
Dimitri sat upon a reinforced stretcher with his broken leg held between several metal supports. Nikita stood in front of him, blocking his path while two medics tried to stop the stubborn Fenrir from rising.
"Your leg is still broken!"
"It’ll heal faster if I move."
"DAD, stop being stupid, or I’ll tell mom!"
Nikita pushed both hands against his shoulders.
Dimitri barely moved.
Her golden eyes narrowed.
"If you stand again, I’ll break the other one."
Dimitri stared at his daughter.
"You wouldn’t."
"I will."
Nikolai approached with Selene beside him.
"Father-in-law, can’t you listen to your cute daughter for once? Your leg looks unstable."
Dimitri clicked his tongue the moment he noticed Nikolai enter the room; his eyes scanned the young werewolf before shaking his head. "Well, if the Patriarch says so."
"Darling! Did you sleep well?"
Nikita glanced briefly at Selene, but she didn’t complain or get jealous, instead rushing to Nikolai’s opposite side and clinging to him.
’Wow... her breasts...’
Much like Selene, neither of them was wearing anything beneath their shirts, greeting him with a soft mound of cushioning. "I wish we could’ve found somewhere nice to sleep last night..." She stood on her tiptoes, whispering in his ear with a low growl.
"What?"
Suddenly, her delicate fingertips spread across his crotch as she squeezed slowly. "I hope you didn’t run off with Selene..."
Nikolai’s brows lifted.
Nikita stared up at him with those wide golden eyes, pretending innocence while her fingers continued testing the growing shape beneath his trousers.
"Kita... we’re surrounded by people."
"So?"
"So your father is sitting twenty metres away."
Her ears twitched, but she didn’t remove her hand.
"He can’t walk over here."
Nikolai struggled to keep his expression calm.
’This little devil...’
He wrapped an arm around her waist and pulled her against him, pressing her smaller body against his. Nikita released a soft gasp, her eyes widening as his hand settled upon her lower back.
"Are you jealous?"
"N-No?!"
"Then why the need to check?" He pulled Nikita tighter, her chest almost crushed flat against his. "Are you jealous I might’ve slept with Selene while you were snoring away?"
Nikita’s cheeks reddened.
"I only wanted to make sure you’re healthy."
"With your hand inside my trousers?"
"It’s a very accurate examination."
Nikolai leaned down until his lips brushed the edge of her ear.
"Then you should finish the examination somewhere private."
Her grip tightened, but in retaliation his hand slipped around her plump buttocks, spreading her cheeks slowly as the heat seeped into his palms. The pair acted just out of sight of both Selene and Dimitri, who seemed oblivious.
A low sound escaped her throat as she pressed her face against his chest, hiding the expression spreading across her face.
"Darling... don’t tease me when we can’t do anything."
"You started it."
"I was worried!"
"And squeezing me makes you less worried?"
"Mhm..."
Nikolai laughed under his breath and stroked the base of her white ears, feeling them twitch against his fingers. Nikita’s knees pressed together as she leaned more of her weight against him.
Selene remained beside them, watching with a faint smile while holding the empty cups.
Nikita glanced towards her.
"You didn’t do anything with him, right?"
Selene raised one brow.
"Would it upset you if I did?"
"Yes."
"Then perhaps I shouldn’t answer."
Nikita narrowed her eyes.
Nikolai caught her chin before she could start another argument and turned her face back towards him.
"She found me near the bodies. We drank coffee and came here."
"That’s all?"
"That’s all."
Nikita studied him for several seconds, her nose wrinkling as she leaned closer and sniffed his neck.
Nikolai stared down at her.
"Seriously?"
"I can smell her."
"She was leaning against me."
Nikita pressed her nose against the other side of his neck.
"And now I can smell myself too."
"Happy?"
"No."
She lifted onto her toes and kissed the side of his mouth, leaving a faint bite against his lower lip before dropping back down.
"Now I’m happy."
Nikolai tasted the small trace of blood she left behind and smiled.
"Possessive little wolf."
"Your possessive little wolf."
Her fingers finally slipped away from his trousers, though she kept both arms wrapped around his waist as they approached the treatment area.
Only then did Dimitri’s frustrated voice carry across the courtyard.
"My daughter.... what are you doing?"
"..." Nikita ignored Dimitri.
Selene couldn’t help but cover her lips as she laughed.
Dimitri, on the other hand, stared at his daughter, frozen in silence, yet she focused on Nikolai, her eyes never leaving him.
However, when he tried to stand again, Nikita’s entire expression changed.
She released Nikolai and turned towards the stretcher.
"Dad, sit the fuck down!"
