Chapter 57: The New Captain, Kisuke Urahara
"Uh... so..."
"I will be your new Captain. I look forward to working with you all."
Kisuke Urahara scratched his head, appearing laid-back and gentle as he faced the Seated Officers and squad members of the 12th Division.
"I won’t accept this! Captain Hikifune leaving so suddenly already pisses me off enough..."
Up on the stage, Hiyori Sarugaki began cursing loudly. Just like in the original story, she was fiercely resistant to this guy taking over Kirio Hikifune’s position.
Yato Uchiha leaned against a pillar in the corner, his thoughts drifting far away.
He gently stroked Akame’s tsuba, pondering the words Kirio Hikifune had said to him an hour ago.
— "This is a good thing, Yato. It seems the Zero Division has been keeping an eye on you."
The boy tilted his head, the image of Ichibei Hyosube’s heavily bearded face flashing through his mind.
Does that guy want to groom me as a successor for the Gotei 13?
Hmph... That doesn’t feel right.
Looks like I’ll need to find an opportunity to get to the bottom of this. At the very least, I need to have my guard up...
Whack!
"What are you even talking about! I can’t stand you!"
The blonde-haired Lieutenant with pigtails delivered a solid kick to Kisuke Urahara’s leg, cursed at him over her shoulder, and ran off in a huff.
However, the new Captain acted as if nothing had happened, watching Hiyori Sarugaki’s retreating figure with a thoughtful expression.
"Cough, Captain Urahara." As the 3rd Seat, Yato Uchiha stepped forward and spoke respectfully:
"Allow me to show you to the Captain’s office first."
"Oh, it’s Yato-kun. Thank you very much."
Back when Yato Uchiha was still studying at the Shin’o Academy, he visited the Kuchiki household frequently and became fairly well acquainted with Yoruichi Shihoin. Because of that, he had also met Kisuke Urahara a few times.
"It’s a good thing you’re here, Yato," Kisuke Urahara smiled, playing the part of an honest, good-natured fellow perfectly.
"Otherwise, I really wouldn’t know how to step down from that stage. Miss Hiyori is quite scary."
Give me a break... Yato clicked his tongue internally, but his face didn’t betray a single hint of it:
"Captain Urahara, Lieutenant Sarugaki is just having a hard time accepting Captain Hikifune’s departure. Deep down, she actually respects you."
"Oh? What makes you say that?"
"If she didn’t respect you, she would have kicked you in the face just now."
"Hahaha! Yato-kun, you’re quite humorous. It seems the atmosphere in our Division isn’t bad at all..."
The storm caused by the changing of the guard between the old and new Captain was much larger than anyone anticipated.
Although Kisuke Urahara appeared laid-back and gentle on the surface, in his bones, he possessed a distinct pride that belonged solely to a genius.
He was not content to merely coast on the achievements of Kirio Hikifune’s tenure. Therefore, on his second day as Captain, he launched a series of drastic reforms.
"You-you-you! What the hell are you doing?!"
Hiyori Sarugaki grabbed her hair, absolutely frantic:
"What do you think this place is?! This is the Captain’s office! How dare you just arbitrarily remodel it?!"
"What’s the big deal?" Kisuke Urahara shrugged.
"This is my space now, anyway."
Overnight, the Captain’s office had undergone an earth-shattering transformation.
Massive glass containers, pipes gleaming with metallic luster, various colorful reagents contained in test tubes, and beeping instruments... This place didn’t look like a Captain’s office anymore; it looked like the secret base of a mad scientist!
"I just did some simple interior decorating, Hiyori."
"You bastard! How is this decorating?! You can’t even recognize what it used to look like! And..." The furious Lieutenant turned and roared toward a corner:
"Yato! Why the hell are you here?!"
"Me? I’m helping the Captain move things," Yato Uchiha replied nonchalantly, shooting her a reproachful glare.
"I’ve been working from last night straight through to now. There are still several centrifuges that haven’t been installed yet. You’re the Lieutenant, yet you didn’t even offer to come help."
Hiyori Sarugaki’s expression shifted rapidly before she finally let out a helpless sigh, as if drained of all her energy.
But at that moment, Kisuke Urahara suddenly grabbed her by the collar:
"Since you’re here, come with me for a bit. We’re going to the Maggots’ Nest." The newly minted Captain turned his head and asked Yato Uchiha:
"Want to come along, Yato? We’re taking a stroll through the Detention Unit."
"No thanks." The boy waved his hand dismissively:
"I need to finish installing these last few centrifuges."
"It’s so great having you around, Yato. These machines are highly precise; even I have to use a magnifying glass when assembling them. Yet you can see every single detail clearly with just the first stage of your Shikai! Outstanding! Truly impressive!"
Yato Uchiha laughed heartily. After Kisuke Urahara and Hiyori Sarugaki left, he activated his Sharingan and continued working.
Ever since entering the Shin’o Academy, he had received praise from countless people and had long grown numb to it. However, if the person praising him was Kisuke Urahara, Yato still found it quite satisfying.
—At least the boss is sweet-talking me into working, not trying to gaslight me.
...
"Mr. Mayuri Kurotsuchi, can you give me an answer regarding the proposal I just made?"
Outside a cell in the depths of the gloomy underground, Kisuke Urahara stood in front of Hiyori Sarugaki, smiling faintly as he looked at the bizarre man inside the prison.
"Are you referring to that insane proposal of leaving this place with you?"
Mayuri Kurotsuchi spoke. His entire body was stark white, with only his eyes gleaming a bizarre brass color. He had peculiar cone-shaped devices attached to his ears, making him look almost like a machine.
"I refuse."
"Why?"
"I am quite satisfied with my life here. There is no need for me to leave."
"You can’t be serious, Mr. Kurotsuchi. For someone like you, wouldn’t being unable to research interesting things be akin to living in Hell?"
"Then let me ask you this, Kisuke Urahara. Why do you want to take me out of the Maggots’ Nest?"
"Because... I need your help."
"Stop sprouting such ostentatious lies. You truly are an unpleasant fellow."
"It seems you have your guard up quite high against me... Very well. I plan to establish an organization underneath the 12th Division, something that has never existed in the Soul Society before."
Kisuke Urahara’s voice suddenly turned incredibly serious:
"Its name will be the ’Shinigami Research and Development Institute’. I want you to be the Vice-President of that organization."
"Are you saying you want me to work under you, Kisuke Urahara?"
"Don’t be so hasty; think about it carefully." The 12th Division Captain raised a single finger, his tone bewitching like a devil:
"In the Shinigami Research and Development Institute, your position will be second only to mine. That means, if any sort of ’accident’ were to happen to me... everything will belong to you."
Mayuri Kurotsuchi remained silent for a long time before coldly spitting out a few words:
"You truly are... an unpleasant fellow."
"Then it’s a deal." Kisuke Urahara didn’t take offense in the slightest. He pulled out a key he had prepared well in advance:
"This is Lieutenant Hiyori Sarugaki. Mayuri, I will help you complete all the necessary procedures today. When you step foot onto the grounds of the Seireitei once again, you will be the 4th Seat of the 12th Division, and the inaugural Vice-President of the SRDI."
"Hmph." Mayuri Kurotsuchi frowned, asking a rare question:
"Only the 4th Seat?"
"Well, the position of Lieutenant is highly significant; it cannot be changed easily and requires seniority as well as the 1st Division’s approval. Furthermore, the 12th Division is somewhat unique. Our 3rd Seat is a man named Yato Uchiha. That guy..."
The corners of Kisuke Urahara’s mouth curled up slightly, bearing a hint of mischievous amusement:
"I’m afraid you are no match for him, Mr. Kurotsuchi."
