Chapter 240: Chapter 240: The Truth I Never Wanted to Hear

Matteo leaned back against the headboard, staring blankly at the ceiling as the tears continued to stream silently down his face. His expression hardened into a mask of pure heartbreak.

"You are selfish till the very end, Adrian," he whispered into the quiet night, his voice hollow, completely shattered by the man who had stolen his heart only to leave him alone in the darkness.

Matteo sat frozen in the oppressive silence of the bedroom, his eyes fixed blankly on the ceiling as hot tears continued to stream down the sides of his face. His thoughts spiraled out of control, trapped in a relentless cycle of heartbreak, regret, and longing that pushed him to the very edge of his sanity. The pain in his chest became almost unbearable, crushing the air from his lungs.

Then a dangerous thought crept into his mind.

Drugs.

He needed to get high.

He needed something strong enough to silence the torment inside his head, something powerful enough to numb the pain for just a few hours.

Maybe then...

He wouldn’t have to feel this.

Maybe then...

He could escape the nightmare, even if only for one night.

And maybe, just maybe...

When he opened his eyes again, Adrian would be back beside him.

His trembling hand reached blindly for his phone.

He was about to call one of his men.

But before his fingers could touch the device...

A soft knock echoed through the bedroom.

Matteo froze.

For one breathless second, he thought grief had finally driven him insane.

Then the knock came again.

Sharper this time. Louder.

Unmistakable in the dead silence of the night.

Adrenaline surged through his veins.

He shot to his feet, every nerve in his body suddenly coming alive as a desperate spark of hope ignited inside him.

Adrian.

It had to be Adrian.

He came back.

Matteo hurried across the room, Adrian’s name already rising to his lips, ready to throw the door open and pull the man he loved into his arms.

But the moment the heavy door swung open...

The hope in his eyes died.

The person standing in the dimly lit hallway wasn’t Adrian.

It was Mark.

Mark offered a warm smile, lifting a hand in greeting.

"Happy birthday to us, bro," he said softly, before his eyes searched the dim space behind his twin. "Were you able to reach Adrian?"

Matteo swallowed the bitter lump of disappointment, forcing his posture to straighten as he tried desperately to sound normal.

"Happy birthday, Mark," he replied, his voice rough and uneven. He deliberately let the question about Adrian hang in the air, unanswered.

But they were twins.

There was nothing to hide from Mark.

The moment the hallway’s soft light fell across Matteo’s face, Mark’s smile disappeared.

His eyes caught the tear tracks, the raw redness around his brother’s eyes, and the overwhelming exhaustion etched into every part of him.

Mark’s expression immediately turned serious.

"Can I come in?" he asked quietly.

Matteo didn’t say a word.

He turned and walked back into the room, leaving the door open behind him.

His steps were slow and heavy as he made his way to the armchair by the window. He lowered himself into it, looking like a man carrying the weight of the world on his shoulders.

Mark stepped inside without another word, quietly closed the door behind him, and walked over before taking the seat opposite his brother.

For a long moment, Mark didn’t speak.

He didn’t demand answers.

He didn’t bombard Matteo with questions.

He simply sat there, watching his twin in silence, patiently waiting for him to speak when he was ready.

Matteo remained motionless.

The tears had finally stopped, but his eyes stayed fixed on the darkness beyond the window. The silence between them stretched on, heavy with everything left unsaid.

Finally, Matteo turned his head.

"Mark..." he murmured, his voice so hoarse it barely rose above a whisper.

Mark leaned forward slightly, his expression calm and unwavering. "Yes, Teo?"

Matteo held his brother’s gaze, his eyes filled with quiet devastation.

"I want you to be honest with me," he said softly. "Completely honest."

He paused before continuing.

"I don’t want you to protect my feelings. I don’t want you to tell me what you think I want to hear."

Another heavy silence settled between them.

"I want you to tell me the absolute truth... everything that’s on your mind."

Mark studied his brother’s shattered expression for a long moment before giving a slow nod.

"Alright," he said quietly. "Ask me."

Matteo drew a slow breath. The question left his lips like a confession.

"What do you really think about my relationship with Adrian?"

Mark’s brow furrowed as the weight of the question settled over him. Before answering, he looked Matteo straight in the eye. "Teo... is everything okay?"

"Just answer the question," Matteo said quietly, his voice strained.

Mark took a slow breath and leaned back in his chair, carefully gathering his thoughts.

He looked at his twin, the man everyone feared, the man who never let anyone see him break, and for the first time in years, Matteo looked completely lost.

"Alright," Mark began softly. "Then I’ll start from the very beginning...

From the moment Adrian’s world collided with yours, I knew something had changed. The first time you talked about him, I knew he wasn’t just another person to you. There was something in your voice... something I’d never heard before.

Then, after waiting all those years, you finally got the chance to be with him... and I watched you change, Teo.

You became human.

For the first time, you weren’t just a boss or a weapon. You weren’t just Matteo Marcone, the man everyone feared.

You became a man who genuinely cared about someone else’s happiness... someone else’s pain... someone else’s life.

You stopped merely surviving.

You finally started living.

But if I’m being completely honest...

From the very beginning, your relationship was built on a ticking time bomb."

Matteo didn’t move, but his jaw tightened in the shadows.

"You love him fiercely. There’s no denying that," Mark continued, never taking his eyes off his twin. "You gave him a life most people could only dream of. You protected him, spoiled him, and gave him everything he could ever ask for. But somewhere along the way, your love became possessive. You wanted to protect him from everything... including the parts of himself that still belonged to his past.

"And Adrian..." Mark continued quietly. "Adrian was already broken when you met him. He was carrying the grief of a dead wife and a dead child. Those wounds were never going to disappear overnight. But instead of giving him the time and space to heal, you kept trying to take their place. You wanted to become everything to him before he was ready to let go of everything he had lost."

Mark fell silent, letting the weight of his words settle over the room.

Matteo slowly lifted his eyes to meet his brother’s. He didn’t say a word.

"You actually did succeed for a while, Teo," Mark said, leaning forward. "You managed to pull him out of his grief. You gave him reasons to smile again. You gave him a future to look forward to. But no matter how hard you tried, you couldn’t erase the life he had before you."

"Adrian loved Elena. She was his wife. They built a life together, and then he lost both her and their son. Those memories weren’t something he could simply erase because he fell in love with you. And it wasn’t just Adrian. Everyone who knew Elena loved her. She left behind people who still mourned her."

Mark paused, taking a slow breath before continuing.

"Charles wasn’t Elena’s husband. But ever since I started dating him, he’d casually mention her without even thinking about it. We’d be cooking, and he’d say, ’Oh, Elena taught me this recipe.’ Or we’d be talking about something completely unrelated, and he’d say, ’Elena used to do that all the time.’

"He never brought her up because he was trying to dwell on the past. It was just... natural. She had been such a big part of their lives that her name still came up from time to time.

"At first, I had no idea who Elena was. I thought she was just a cousin, an aunt, or a family friend. It wasn’t until one day, when Charles mentioned Adrian in the same conversation, that I finally asked who she was.

Mark offered a faint, wistful smile at the memory.

"Charles just looked at me and said, ’Mark... Elena was Adrian’s late wife.’

"That was the moment everything clicked. I realized that all that time, he’d been talking so casually about the woman his best friend had lost.

"I remember asking Charles how he became such a good cook. Do you know what he said?"

Mark looked directly at Matteo.

"’Elena taught the three of us how to cook back then. She was our closest friend.’"

Mark looked directly into Matteo’s eyes, refusing to let him look away.

"Even now..."
