Chapter 237: Chapter 237: When Patience Turned to Revenge
He waited, listening carefully, but no footsteps came from inside.
Frowning, Adrian turned to the lead guard standing rigidly behind him.
"Harry... is Matteo actually inside?"
Harry kept his eyes focused straight ahead, his face a disciplined mask. "Yes, sir."
Anxiety tightening his throat, Adrian raised his hand and knocked again, louder this time.
Knock. Knock. Knock.
This time, a few seconds passed before Matteo’s deep, detached voice drifted through the closed door.
"Give me a second."
Adrian let out a ragged sigh and stepped back, waiting.
But a single second quickly bled into ten long minutes.
The heavy silence in the hallway became unbearable. As fifteen minutes turned into thirty, and thirty crawled toward forty-five, Adrian’s exhaustion rapidly curdled into sharp, burning anger.
He had spent the last two days drowning in the grief of his past, and now his boyfriend was intentionally locking him out.
Just as Adrian was about to lose his patience and shout, the lock finally clicked.
The heavy mahogany door swung open from the inside. Adrian braced himself to face Matteo’s fury, but his breath caught in his throat. It wasn’t Matteo who stepped across the threshold.
It was another man.
The stranger was young, attractive, and deliberately adjusting the collar of his rumpled shirt as he stepped out into the hallway.
He glanced at Adrian with a lazy, knowing smirk, smoothing down his clothes before walking past the security detail toward the elevators.
Adrian stood frozen, the blood completely draining from his face.
A sickening roar erupted in his ears.
Without saying a word to the stranger or the guards, he stormed inside the penthouse, slamming the door shut behind him with a deafening crash.
He marched straight into the room, his eyes wildly scanning the space.
The room was in complete disarray.
Matteo was sitting casually on the edge of the massive bed, his dark eyes tracking Adrian’s explosive entrance with a cold, terrifying calmness.
"Who the fuck was that?" Adrian shouted, his voice cracking with a mixture of raw rage and sudden terror. "Who just left this room?!"
Matteo didn’t blink. He reached for a glass of liquor on the nightstand, taking a slow, deliberate sip. "Just someone who has been keeping me company since you abandoned me on Friday."
Adrian’s chest heaved violently, his breathing turning shallow and ragged as the words struck him like a physical blow.
He marched right up to the edge of the mattress, his fists clenched so tightly they trembled with restrained fury.
"What did you just say to me? Repeat that."
Matteo slowly rose from the bed.
As he straightened to his full, towering height, the silk duvet that had been loosely draped over his lap slipped away, pooling onto the floor.
Adrian’s breath caught in his throat.
Matteo was completely naked.
His broad, muscular chest was slightly flushed, and the absence of any clothing, coming just moments after another man had walked out of the room, painted a horrifying, unmistakable picture in Adrian’s mind.
Adrian completely lost his composure.
A broken, desperate cry tore from his throat.
"Why, Matteo?" he choked out. "Why would you do this to me?!"
"It’s simple, baby," Matteo replied smoothly, his tone empty of any remorse. He took a slow step forward, completely unbothered by his own nudity. "I was horny. I wanted to be touched, so I invited him over. I couldn’t wait around for you to return when you clearly had better places to be."
Adrian stared at him, his entire world shattering into sharp pieces in a single heartbeat.
His lower lip began to tremble violently.
Looking at the bare skin of the man he loved, and realizing what he believed had just taken place on that bed, a deep, agonizing pain cut through his anger.
Before Adrian could even process the pain, Matteo closed the distance between them.
He stepped directly into Adrian’s space, acting as if nothing was wrong.
"Welcome back, baby," Matteo murmured darkly, leaning down. "How was everything? How did your little trip go?"
With terrifying calmness, Matteo tilted his head, pressing his lips against the warm skin of Adrian’s neck in a mocking, possessive caress.
Adrian stood entirely paralyzed.
His mind went completely blank, his body stiffening under the touch as a single, heavy tear finally spilled over his eyelashes, tracing a wet path down his pale cheek.
His entire frame began to shake, his silent weeping tearing a visible contrast against Matteo’s rigid, unbothered posture.
Matteo pulled back just enough to look down into Adrian’s crying face, a cruel, mocking smirk playing on his lips. "Did Elena’s family love those luxury gifts I bought for them? Did you thoroughly enjoy your stay with her family?"
Adrian slowly looked up, his eyes glassy with tears and filled with a profound, heartbreaking despair.
His lips trembled so violently he could barely get the words out.
But when he finally spoke, his voice was barely above a whisper.
"Let’s break up."
The cruel smirk instantly vanished from Matteo’s face.
A flash of genuine shock rippled through his dark eyes, his body freezing at the declaration. But his legendary pride quickly locked back into place, his expression hardening into stone.
"Fine," Matteo snapped flatly, his voice dropping into a deadly, emotionless tone. "I’m completely okay with that."
The words were the final blow.
Adrian froze in shock.
He had never expected Matteo to agree.
More than anyone, Adrian knew how deeply Matteo loved him.
That answer shattered the last bit of hope he had been desperately holding on to.
He turned away from Matteo, his tear-filled eyes frantically searching the room for his luggage.
The moment he spotted it, he rushed over, yanked open the wardrobe where Matteo had hung his clothes, and began pulling them off the hangers in a frantic rush, throwing everything into his open suitcase as he completely broke down.
His choked sobs echoed through the silent room.
Matteo didn’t move to stop him.
He didn’t say a single word to comfort the man who was breaking down before him.
Instead, he walked over to the floor-to-ceiling window and turned his back on Adrian.
Striking a match, he lit a fresh cigarette and kept his eyes fixed on the smoke curling against the glass, letting the heavy silence settle over the suite.
Suddenly, Adrian sprang to his feet and rushed for the door.
The movement made Matteo turn around at once.
His body instinctively shifted as if to follow, but the hurt and wounded pride he had been carrying for the past two days held him back.
He remained where he was, watching as Adrian stormed out of the suite and disappeared...
