Chapter 66: Chapter 66: A Woman Who Takes Risk (V)
Claudia POV
The Oak-Sinar Medical Centre was quite far from Downtown Los Angeles, and the drive was quite slow because of traffic.
For each second that passed, my heart grew wary and my mind grew restless. I clenched the elephant doll in my hand, but quickly released it when I remembered that it was made for Aurora.
Aurora took care of her elephant dolls very carefully and got upset when the elephant’s ear was ripped once when she was four.
I tried to make myself look as calm as possible, yet perhaps the nervousness was written all over my face that the taxi driver began making conversation in his gruff voice.
"Are you working in there, Miss?"
"S-sorry?" I tilted my head and looked at the taxi driver. "Working? In... that apartment?"
"Uh-huh," the driver nodded. "Gotta say, the money must be nice, huh? I heard that building is owned by a rich kid."
So, my suspicion about Ray owning the building was true. No wonder the building manager referred to him as ’Young Master.’
"Oh, mm... I-I was working there..." I replied hesitantly, not wanting to tell any details about my dealings with Ray Gatlin.
Though, who in their right mind would believe me if I said that I signed a pet contract with a madman who used a legal loophole to make the contract binding by law?
Even I had a difficult time accepting the idea if someone told me this.
"Then, have you met the madam?" he asked further.
"Madam?" my brows creased as I had only heard of such a thing. "O-oh, maybe you mean another tenant in that building?"
If the building was owned by Ray, I assumed he either rented it for office spaces since it was in downtown Los Angeles, or used it as an apartment.
Though I never met another tenant before, because I was locked up inside that penthouse.
Now it was the driver who looked confused. "Huh? What are you talking about, Miss? I heard from the madam that the building is an office space owned by her husband, Ray... Ray-somethin’. He’s a rich kid from an influential family."
"That Ray guy and the madam are the only ones who live at the penthouse on top of that building. That’s what she said to me when she used my taxi once to go to a restaurant," the driver added.
Now, I was even more confused, because I had never heard of this madam in my life before, and Ray didn’t seem to be bringing any woman home.
Could it be that she was one of Ray’s past flings? Or maybe it was Jane who claimed to be Ray’s wife? After all, Jane’s infatuation could cause her to do something foolish like that.
"Can you tell me what the madam looks like?" I asked.
"Uhh..." the driver hummed for a while. "She has long, wavy brown hair, tanned skin, and uhh... wearing a dress so sexy. Couldn’t help but look at her knockers a few times, heheh."
The driver seemed to realize his inappropriate comment and apologized immediately. "Ah—s-sorry, Miss. I didn’t mean to say that. It’s just... difficult to look away, because that woman was a show-off! But I think those knockers are fake, since they look like two balloons stuffed together, hahah!"
And that was still inappropriate.
I thought as I peered at the taxi driver.
However, I had never seen a woman with that physical description around Ray before. That was definitely not Jane, because Jane Jiang was an Asian woman with straight short hair, and she didn’t have a pair of fake breasts.
Strangely, I had a gut feeling that I might’ve known this woman, because those characteristics matched well with...
Clarissa.
Long, wavy brown hair, tanned skin because of frequent visits to the tanning salon, and a pair of fake breasts. Because when I saw her again for the first time after fifteen years, Clarissa didn’t hesitate to show her surgically enhanced breasts, all because she didn’t want to lose to me.
It was very strange to me, because since I was young, I wished mine were smaller. I hated how they often weighed on my back, and how hard it was to cover them up even with a bra.
But that woman was definitely not Clarissa, right?
Clarissa had always been greedy. If she had successfully slept with Ray just once, she would latch onto him like a parasite, knowing that Ray was a lot richer than Miles could ever be.
But what if that’s true? That there might be something going on between Ray and Clarissa?
As ridiculous as it sounded, the thought actually weighed on me even after I reached my destination and went up to the fifth floor to visit my daughter.
No, that can’t be. If Ray and Clarissa were hooking up, Clarissa would’ve ruined me even worse than this. With Ray’s money and influence, I might be as good as dead.
So... then, why does that ’madam’ the driver talked about sound so similar to Clarissa? Could it be that it’s just a coincidence?
I snapped out of my pondering once I reached the door. It was strange because the fifth floor was so empty right now.
On top of that, Ray also promised to get one police officer to guard Aurora’s room, but I didn’t see anyone.
I checked the time, and it was still ten-thirty in the morning, so the lunch break should start later.
"Is he slacking off? I have to tell Ray about this then. Aurora’s safety is important, since Clarissa might be crazy enough to hurt her—" I murmured as I pushed the door open.
The door opened to a chilling sight: Aurora lay motionless on the bed, still comatose, surrounded by tubes.
At her side stood Clarissa, a fruit knife in her hand.
Her eyes had been fixed on Aurora’s neck—until she noticed the door open. Then she turned toward me and grinned.
"Oh? Sister, you’ve finally crawled out of whatever shitty brothel you’ve been hiding in. That’s good, because I’m starting to get bored toying with your little girl."
