Chapter 58: Ch97. Questions
Kurt placed the bar in its place again.
"They... Didn’t work?" He couldn’t hide the disbelief in his tone, even though he had seen Lester and the other students kicking the shit out of Nikolai, and almost...
He didn’t want to think about it, but he found it really hard to believe, that even Nikolai would come off like that.
"Hard to believe, I know." Nikolai retorted. "But even now, we don’t feel any power coursing through us."
"I can’t even..." Evellyn looked to the floor.
"You mean you can’s use even your Precognition?" Kurt’s eyes went wide.
Both Nikolai and Evellyn looked at him like he was the one telling them he couldn’t use his powers.
"How do you know about it?"
Kurt coughed, knowing he’d fucked up, but decided to not be completely dishonest.
"It’s a long story, and I’ll tell you one day, but for now, let’s focus on the matter at hand." Kurt said, avoiding the sensitive topic of his experience. "When was the last time you used your abilities?"
And they talked about how it hadn’t been long since the last time Evellyn and Nikolai used their powers, how everything was fine until a few hours ago, and that they didn’t feel anything strange happening within their bodies, for them to notice that something was wrong with their powers.
And they came to the conclusion that it was seemingly impossible that something could’ve just happen to take their abilities away.
But then, Kurt had another idea.
’[PRYING EYES]’
For a few seconds, Evellyn and Nikolai just stared at Kurt, while he frowned and narrowed his eyes at them.
"Are you feeling good, friend?" Nikolai asked.
But after a few more seconds, Kurt sighed in relief, although his expression showed a bit of confusion.
Kurt thought he’d see the information about them displayed to him in form of system windows, but instead, the system voice just rang in his head.
And what he heard made him question everything about the system until that moment.
[THE SUBJECT OF THE SKILL STILL HAS THE AWAKENED TRAIT, HOWEVER, EXTERNAL INFLUENCES ARE RESONATING WITH THE SUBJECT’S BODY. THE RESONANCE IS BLOCKING THE SUBJECTS POWER, KEEPING THEM FROM CHANNELING THE AWAKENED TRAIT.]
"What the hell...?"
Kurt’s eyes went slightly wide, and his jaw fell, leaving his mouth slightly ajar.
"What?" Evellyn and Nikolai asked in unison.
"Nothing, I just... Never mind. The thing is, there’s nothing wrong with your abilities themselves."
"Huh?" Both of them looked at Kurt in disbelief. "How do you know that?"
"It doesn’t matter right now. What matters..." Kurt’s expression became serious and contemplative. "Is that something here in the academy is preventing you from using your abilities."
Evellyn looked at Nikolai, who looked back at her.
The two kept exchanging glances, and after a few moments, despite the darkness in the atmosphere, Kurt began feeling slightly uncomfortable.
"What are you guys doing?" He asked. "Why are you looking at each other like that?"
Nikolai and Evellyn nodded at each other, and he started speaking.
"Let’s put the thing with out abilities aside for a few minutes, we know you’ll try to help us and all. But there’s something we NEED to talk about."
Nikolai’s voice was covered in seriousness, and Kurt sighed inwardly, fearing what would become of that conversation.
"About what?"
"You." Evellyn answered, pulling a bench closer to Kurt’s and sitting.
"What about me?"
"You have abilities that, as far as I know, aren’t recorded in any books." Nikolai said, and it made Kurt remember the Nikolai’s version from the other world-line, and how he started his path as the King of the Underground.
Just a few old books that he had complete knowledge of, and the drive to become more.
He felt a glimpse of happiness mixed with something else in his heart, something heavy.
But he was glad to see that Nikolai didn’t have become just another wielder.
"And so do you and Evellyn, that’s why we’re called irregulars, right?" Kurt retorted, trying his best to dismiss the issue.
However, the two friends didn’t enter the gunfight with just knives.
"Mine is a genetic trait that comes from my father’s family line, and even though it isn’t recorded in the history books, we have quite the collection of every ability awakened in my family tree."
"And mine is a very unique trait, but it’s already been recorded by the Association, because there have been traces of information leading to people in the past few generations, awakening with similar traits."
Kurt’s lips curled down in one side.
"So what? I’m not so special as you might think."
"Kurt, cut the bullshit." Nikolai interrupted him. "We know you hide something, and we know that we haven’t been friends for long, so if you feel like not trusting us with whatever secret you keep, that’s okay."
"But we do know that you’re keeping something from us, and we’re okay with it. Just... Just know that you don’t have to carry it alone."
Friendships don’t form such tight bonds so quickly, right?
At least that was what Kurt asked himself, but he knew that something was wrong with the world-lines, and despite him not having any connection with the other Kurt, aside from the [MEMORY FRAGMENT], it was probably natural that they would have some kind of connection to their other versions.
And Kurt didn’t know if it was dangerous or not, aside from the fact that they knew about him, somehow.
Everything he felt like being able to do, once the two finally stopped talking, was to give them a shrug.
"Okay, I guess. But don’t blame me if you end up finding nothing special or different about me, aside from my abilities." He rolled his eyes.
’I’ll do everything in my reach for you to trust me.’ Nikolai and Evellyn thought at the same time as they exchanged glances again.
"Fine by us." They said, almost like best friends.
"Now..." Evellyn spoke again. "What were you saying, about something in the academy preventing us from using our abilities?"
Kurt sighed in relief, finally free from that uncomfortable topic.
"So, all I can tell you is that, if you didn’t feel anything abnormal within your bodies, than it only means that it might be caused by an external interference. The only problem is..."
"No one ever recorded any information about anything that could block an awakened’s power..."
"Which reminds me, when you saved us, you appeared right out of nowhere, kicking everyone’s asses." Nikolai scratched his chin. "Does that mean you can still use your abilities?"
’Shit...’ Kurt tried to avoid the topic, but it felt like it was coming back all over again.
"It probably means that it was something that targeted the two of you. Didn’t you think of that possibility?"
Evellyn’s eyes grew wide, and she slammed her hands together.
"Lester..."
"Well... If it was him, judging by how he and his goons were picking on you earlier, and if we’re to get some answers from him..." Kurt retorted, with a wicked smile on his face. "We might have to wait a few more days and pay him a visit in the infirmary, right, guys?"
