Chapter 41: Ch81. Test - 2

Kurt didn’t like the idea of letting innocent people get hurt for his personal reasons, but he had to level up if he wanted to get revenge for his mom.

And the weight on his heart felt heavier than the slight guilt that took over him for a few seconds.

"Okay then." He prepared to run, testing the soil below him.

Due to the increase in [AGILITY] and [DEXTERITY], he made far less noise while walking than he thought he would.

Kurt smirked at his nearly silent movements, and started to run towards the screams, unsheathing his daggers.

The feeling of the blades in his hands were so familiar, that for one second, Kurt forgot that the memories or the sensations he experienced in the [MEMORY FRAGMENT] weren’t his own.

And during that moment, he wasn’t just Kurt.

He still weren’t as strong as the other version of himself, but the movements he remembered made him lethal.

Even if just for that occasion.

There were two wolves surrounding a boy and a girl, they held hands while looking at each other, trying their best to not look at their hunters, but when the Direwolves were ready to strike...

Slash!

Spurt!

Blood flowed from the back of one of the Direwolves and it fell to the ground, whimpering.

’The best thing of being almost silent...’ Kurt smirked in the darkness. ’Is that silence fits way too well with this place.’

The wolves were huge, but those didn’t seem to be fully grown adults, because Kurt could easily jump over the one he killed and slide across the grassy ground.

Slash!

Spurt!

Cutting open the throat of the second Direwolf.

"We’re saved!" The boy said, looking at the girl, crying. But Kurt weren’t there to see the scene.

He kept running, but slowed the pace to not let fatigue build up too soon.

He took deep breaths as he stretched his arms and legs.

Moving like that without even half the stats he needed for doing it comfortably took a toll on his body, and he knew better than to be reckless or irresponsible.

Kurt inhaled and exhaled as silently as possible, sharpening his ears to listen to the screams.

’Come on... Where’s the nearest one...?’

A few seconds passed and nothing.

A few more seconds passed, and as Kurt’s heartbeat decreased and his body felt a bit more relaxed, the sound finally came.

But it didn’t come in a way that Kurt was expecting.

"IF YOU WANT TO TAKE A PIECE OF HER, YOU ARE GOING TO HAVE TO GET THROUGH ME FIRST!"

It was Nikolai’s voice, but he seemed tired, almost out of breath.

The sound of the Direwolves indicated that there were more than two around them, just waiting for the right time to attack.

Kurt turned around, trying to see the direction where the boy’s voice was coming from, when he noticed a faint glimpse of light to his left, but a bit far away.

Kurt’s heart throbbed, and he felt a bit dizzy for a second.

’Damn it... Again?’

But his body moved on its own accord, despite his mind telling him to stay calm.

Kurt charged towards where his other version’s best friend was waiting to be devoured, and this time, he didn’t think of nothing, but his heart wasn’t willing to let it happen in this world, too.

Kurt ran for almost a minute before he could reach Nikolai’s whereabouts, and when he arrived there, he almost thought of leaving him and his companion be, since the Russian boy seemed to be handling things pretty well.

If only he didn’t look so tired, and the red-haired girl behind him didn’t look so defenseless.

’Why is she just standing there? Didn’t she take a weapon or something?’

Even more important, Kurt had to find a way to make Nikolai’s torch go out, or else, he’d be exposed to them.

And he didn’t want them to know he was near.

But Kurt didn’t need to worry about it, because right after his thought, Nikolai raised his torch and froze, completely still.

The fire in the torch waved for a second, and then one Direwolf fell to the ground.

’He’s pretty good at it, I gotta admit.’ Kurt’s lips curled up a bit.

But after Nikolai used his ability, Blink, and killed three beasts, it didn’t take long for ten more to appear.

And for Nikolai’s torch to go out.

Evellyn screamed behind Nikolai, and Kurt felt as if a hand had grabbed his heart and squeezed it hard.

’Right, no time for emotions right now.’ Kurt inhaled and exhaled, raising his daggers in front of him and focusing his senses.

He dashed forward and felt his blade sink into the neck of one beast. It whimpered a little, but kept up.

’Shit, not a vital point!’

But at least the Beast was profusely bleeding.

"Who’s there?" Nikolai asked, almost in a shout, noticing that someone had attacked one of the Direwolves.

Kurt didn’t say a single thing, he just kept on jumping from one Direwolf to another.

Until everything went wrong, and he jumped to attack one beast that was closer to another.

The Direwolf that didn’t get killed got the track of Kurt’s smell, and dug its teeth into Kurt’s shoulder, almost making him let out a painful shriek.

He focused all his strength in raising his arm and digging the blade on one of his daggers into the beast’s thick neck, and his newly acquired strength stats helped him overcome the barrier between pain and effort.

The Direwolf shrieked, but fell dead right after.

Beep!

[LEVEL UP!]

A black light enveloped Kurt as he felt the wound on his shoulder closing, and all his fatigue vanishing as if it had never been there to begin with.

"Pick pocket man?" He heard Nikolai say.

But as soon as Kurt felt his strength coming back, he sprinted towards the darkness again.

’That was some luck, right there...’ Kurt sighed, leaning against a tree. ’Now, since I’ve just leveled up, it’d be good to check how my stats are.’

He opened the system window and observed the information.

’The parameters doesn’t seem right...’ Kurt thought, remembering his other version’s numbers each time a leveling up occurred.

But it also seemed that his system was slightly different. More friendly than the other Kurt’s, so he left it alone and just smirked at the results of his leveling up.

’I still need more stat points, though. But a new skill right at level three? That’s sick! Time to check the two new skills and see what they’re about.’

Kurt rested for a few minutes and scrolled through the information about the newly acquired skills.

Kurt took in some more deep breaths before he could focus again, and when he did, he prepared the system to copy the skill.

’Wait... [VP]? What is it, and what happened to the MP?’

Kurt’s brow went up as the realization of the difference hit, but then, all around the dark forest, screams echoed, and he understood that he couldn’t save everyone of them.

Kurt didn’t even want to save everyone, to begin with, but the students didn’t do anything wrong to deserve death.

"Other than willingly entering the Nest..."

Kurt thought that they did it at their own accord, so whatever happened to them, was on their own account, so he focused his senses and chose to, at least, get some EXP from saving a few.

He needed to level up some more if he wanted to take the floor’s boss down.

’And the best of us will stay alive until the boss’s den is found, so it should be enough.’

Kurt ran, saving his breath and energy, mimicking the techniques his other version had, and with that, he went on killing the Direwolves.

The students that were hurt or scared, didn’t know what or who saved them, but we’re thankful for their lives.

Kurt, however, was thankful for the amount of EXP he was gathering from farming so many beasts.

It had taken him ten beasts to level up the last time, and now, he was on his eleventh hour of hunting.

He had already hunted down ninety five Direwolves, and yet, not a single beep sounded in his head.

He hadn’t leveled up yet.

His stomach growled, Kurt finally noticed that he could take days to finish the Nest, and he didn’t bring any food.

It was probably part of the test, so Kurt sat down for a bit and thought to himself, before a faint light went up by his side.

"You hungry, friend?"

Nikolai and Evellyn appeared with a small torch, and the boy carried a young Direwolf corpse on his back.
