Chapter 73: Ch112. Gone
After the fight was over, and the group found refuge in Rodrick’s house in the academy, Evellyn was still baffled by the professor’s question.
"Doesn’t that fighting style belong to Mr. Blake?"
The thing leading the way, after the battle had ended, was still in the form of a Diwerewolf, and Evellyn was kind of insecure about talking to it.
Nikolai, on the other hand, poked the black Diwerewolf’s side, to her absolute surprise, and waited for it to look at him.
"Kurt?" Nikolai asked, absolutely out of nowhere.
The beast froze on its tracks, turned its huge head towards Nikolai, and got its face so close that it seemed it wanted to eat the boy.
"Grrrrrrrrrr" The beast growled, menacingly.
Nikolai froze immediately, an absolute fear taking control of him and almost making him wet his pants.
But after a few seconds of glaring and growling, the beast just sniffed right at Nikolai’s face, throwing all of Nikolai’s hair backwards.
"So... Your not Kurt, huh?" Nikolai said. "Do you know him, though?"
The beast, then, raised its head and let out a loud howl.
And when it lowered its head back, there were tears slightly streaming down its face.
"Oh my God..." Nikolai said, looking over his shoulder.
When Evellyn noticed his look, she felt a pang in her chest, and her stomach sank.
"No..."
Rodrick looked down, and Cinthia looked up, without knowing what to do.
"What, now?" Nikolai asked to no one in particular.
It was Rodrick who broke the silence after a few minutes.
"You still gotta get your abilities back, right?"
"He’s right, you know?" Cinthia said, awkwardly. "After all, it’s not like the guy has been part of your lives for long... He’s not even a real f-"
The sound of the slap was as loud as if it had become from awakened hands.
Cinthia didn’t feel much, because Evellyn had lost her powers, which meant that her physical strength was the same as that of a regular’s, and Evellyn’s hand hurt after that.
But she didn’t pay attention to her throbbing hand, looking deadly serious into Cinthia’s eyes.
"Don’t you dare finish that sentence..."
Were those tears in her eyes?
Cinthia closed her mouth and didn’t say a word.
"We have to get our powers back," Evellyn said "so we can go looking for Kurt."
Nikolai nodded.
"But before that, we gotta find out what exactly happened to him."
"Guys, we know what happened to him. He’s-"
Before Cinthia could finish her sentence, Evellyn shot her another deadly glare.
"Fine, fine. What the fuck am I even doing here with you guys, then? It almost looks like this Kurt dude is more important than the friends you made in highschool. Fuck me, I’m out of here!"
Nikolai looked at Evellyn, but she didn’t say a word.
She just let Cinthia turn around and walk away.
The Diwerevolf, looking at the whole scene, just tilted its head and whined, confused.
And as they arrived and entered Rodrick’s home, Evellyn said.
"Nikita, you never had any pets. How are you able to communicate so easily with a beast?"
Nikolai smirked.
"I never had a pet, but my papa, on the other hand... He is not only the boss of an entire mafia guild, but also he is a Tamer."
Rodrick looked at Nikolai, rubbed his chin, and frowned.
"Kid... What’s your name again?"
Nikolai glared at the professor.
"Your last name, I mean." Rodrick raised his hands, apologizing.
"Oh, right. It’s Semenov, sir. Why?"
"Semenov... Semenov... Semenov... NO WAY! You’re Alexsander Semenov’s son?"
The beast tilted its head, and Evellyn raised a brow, but Nikolai smirked even wider.
Proud that there was something he could brag about to a professor of his.
"None other, sir. My papa is the master of NNS guild, and he has a total of twenty familiars under his command."
After a few more minutes of bragging, Nikolai finally closed his mouth, letting Evellyn finally enjoy some silence, and Rodrick with a slack jaw.
Even the professor never imagined that the master of NNS guild was that awesome.
"So it means that you can find some answers about Kurt?" He asked.
"I can try, but Groth’s mind is kinda confusing, because it comes from a place different than that where the familiars usually come from."
"Its name is Groth?" Evellyn’s eyes went wide.
Nikolai just shrugged.
Neither Rodrick nor Evellyn understood what Nikolai meant by that, but the boy proceeded to talk with the beast for minutes nonstop.
Minutes, then, turned into hours, and after a few more, the unimaginable happened.
BAM!
Groth literally headbutted Nikolai’s forehead, and the boy fell flat to the floor, seemingly unconscious.
"WHAT THE-" Evellyn shouted, getting up from the couch.
"STAY RIGHT THERE!" Rodrick warned Groth, arming himself.
"Wait, wait, guys..." Nikolai got up slowly, rubbing his forehead. "First of all, he didn’t do it with the intention of hurting me. Second... OUCH! I didn’t remember that being a regular ached so much!" And then, Nikolai’s eyes focused straight, beyond everyone in the room. "Third... Oh shit..."
"What happened?" Evellyn and Rodrick asked in unison.
"Let me put all my thoughts in order first." Nikolai asked. "First of all, this big guy here, Groth, he was ordered to protect us, to take care of us. He was born during the fight between Kurt and Rhegal, but he comes from all the way back into the Nest test."
"..."
"I don’t know how to explain it better than this, but Groth is some kind of reincarnation of the Nest’s boss, and he became Kurt’s familiar."
"Kurt’s what?" Evellyn dropped back down at the couch.
"But the boy isn’t a tamer, is he?" Rodrick scratched his bald head.
"Not that I know of, but that seems to be the case. And that’s not all."
he waited for them to ask anything else, but since they didn’t, Nikolai just kept talking.
"So, Kurt has this mental and emotional bond with Groth, and during the fight against Rhegal, after we all passed out due to that weird screech, Groth himself asked Kurt if he could take us away from the fight..."
Rodrick looked at Groth and winked at him, giving a thumbs up, to which the familiar eagerly responded, and Evellyn looked at the familiar with fondness.
Suddenly, Groth exploded in a smoke cloud, and went back to his puppy form, jumping into Evellyn’s lap.
"Oh my God, he’s so cute!"
Nikolai cleared his throat, and tried to daw her attention again.
"So, as I was saying, Groth rescued us while Kurt was facing Rhegal all by himself, but that’s where things get a little confusing..."
No one said anything, so Nikolai just got back to explaining it.
"Rhegal died, but he generated a portal, something like a bubble, but it wasn’t a bubble, and... Kurt walked right into it..."
"Wait, what?" Evellyn got up, letting Groth fall to the floor.
Nikolai stood silent for a few seconds, before Evellyn urged him to finish.
"What do you mean by that, Nikolai?"
Nikolai’s expression became dark and grievous.
"I mean that... Kurt’s gone..."
