Chapter 414: Chapter 348: Xiao Mo, What Do You Think?
Turning around, he saw Lian Li standing before him.
"Miss Lian, you certainly seem to have a lot of free time lately," Xiao Mo said, looking at the woman before him.
Xiao Mo had previously let Lian Li go, but she hadn’t left immediately.
After the main force of the Northern Wilderness Army arrived at Yanmen Pass, Xiao Mo didn’t rescind his decision and still permitted her to leave. Yet, Lian Li still didn’t go, choosing to stay in the city instead.
Not that Xiao Mo paid her any mind.
After all, during the great battle, Lian Li, a prisoner, had inexplicably appeared on the city walls. The Wei Army must have seen her.
If Lian Li were to return to the Wei Kingdom, she would definitely be met with suspicion.
Moreover, someone needed to take the fall for this war. Lian Li was the first to lose a city; even if she weren’t viewed with suspicion, she would likely be made a scapegoat.
So, in Xiao Mo’s view, Lian Li would be lucky just to survive after returning to the Wei Kingdom, let alone command troops again.
Lian Li was, of course, well aware of all this.
"It is quite leisurely," Lian Li nodded. "Back when I was your prisoner, I felt fine spending my days in a cell. Now that you’ve let me out, I find I don’t know what to do with myself."
"What? Does General Lian wish to return to the dungeons?" Xiao Mo joked.
Lian Li tilted her head, then stepped forward and held out her hands. "That doesn’t sound so bad. Why don’t you put me in chains again?"
Xiao Mo shook his head. "There’s no need for that. If General Lian were to agree to join my Qin Kingdom, I’m sure you could accomplish great things."
Lian Li lowered her hands. "The Sovereign of Wei may be fatuous and incompetent, but the Wei Kingdom is still the country that raised me. I cannot lead an army to attack my own homeland."
"Then go find my master and learn some Spear Technique from him," Xiao Mo said.
"The lineage of the Spear Immortal only ever accepts one disciple at a time. You’re not dead, so it would be useless for me to go."
"Since when has General Lian become so troublesome?"
"You people of Qin have an old saying—’women and children are the most trouble.’ General Xiao seems to have forgotten that I am, in fact, a woman."
"..." Xiao Mo was momentarily speechless.
"However..." Lian Li changed the subject. "These past few days, I’ve had some thoughts while in the city. I came today to bid you farewell, General Xiao."
"Where will you go, Miss?" Xiao Mo asked, curious.
"To travel the Allied States." Lian Li looked directly into Xiao Mo’s eyes and said, "I want to see for myself what this world is truly like."
"That’s wonderful." Xiao Mo cupped his fist in a salute. "Take care, Miss."
"You too." Lian Li gave Xiao Mo one last look, then turned and left.
"Oh, right." Just as Lian Li was about to leave the courtyard, she stopped, turned back again, and said, "That Princess of Qin you told me about before... she really is beautiful."
With that, Lian Li disappeared into the night.
Xiao Mo shook his head, turned to a large tree, and said, "You can come out now. She just complimented you on your beauty."
「A moment later.」
Dressed in a long white dress, Qin Siyao emerged from behind the tree. The young woman turned her head away, her hands behind her back, and pouted. "Who needs her compliments! I don’t care one bit!"
"Then what does the Princess care about?" Xiao Mo smiled.
"I care about you." The young woman strode toward Xiao Mo, her long legs moving beneath her dress, her eyes curving into crescents. "Speaking of which, that Miss Lian is quite pretty, don’t you think, Xiao Mo?"
"Not as beautiful as the Princess," Xiao Mo replied.
"Really? But how come I’ve been hearing these past few days that you and General Lian hit it off? That you even dueled under the walls of Mati City and that feelings began to blossom between you?" Qin Siyao watched Xiao Mo, her beautiful eyes blinking.
"That’s all false. At the time, I was merely using a stratagem to try and capture Mati City and sow discord between the Wei Kingdom’s Imperial Court and the Southern Realm..."
Xiao Mo knew Siyao would hear about this. Thankfully, he had already prepared his explanation.
"But it’s true that Lian Li is highly skilled in the Martial Dao and is a fine military commander. My original plan was that if she refused to surrender, I would send her to your side for you to deal with as you see fit."
"Really?" Qin Siyao looked at Xiao Mo, half-believing.
"Really."
"Actually, Xiao Mo, I’m not a petty woman. If you wanted to take her as a concubine, I would agree," Qin Siyao said understandingly.
"There is truly nothing between her and me," Xiao Mo said with a small laugh. "When have I ever lied to you?"
"Alright then..." Qin Siyao turned her head away, a happy smile gracing her lips. "I did give you a chance, you know. You can’t say I’m the jealous type, now can you..."
"Of course." ’How could I not know this girl was just testing me?’
’If I’d agreed just now, I’d probably have to spend ages placating her.’
"By the way, it’s getting so late. Siyao, why aren’t you in bed yet?" Xiao Mo changed the subject.
"I can’t sleep." Qin Siyao lowered her little head. "Sister Hua Sheng said she has to take me back the day after tomorrow. The moment I think about returning to the Imperial City, I just want to see you. I went looking for you in the courtyard just now, but you weren’t there, so I guessed you must be in the main hall discussing military affairs."
"Sorry, it’s been a bit busy lately." Xiao Mo thought for a moment, then said to Qin Siyao, "Siyao, would you like to visit the army camp? Li Jing and the others should be having a gathering tonight. They invited me this afternoon."
"Can I?" Qin Siyao asked expectantly.
"The soldiers have been resting these past few days, so of course it’s fine." Xiao Mo ruffled her hair. "Let’s go."
"Mhm."
Qin Siyao happily followed by Xiao Mo’s side.
Before long, Xiao Mo brought Qin Siyao to the army camp.
Li Jing, Zhao Guang, Xiao Gui, and a dozen or so other officers were sitting in a circle around a bonfire, drinking.
"Still drinking?" Xiao Mo asked as he walked up with Qin Siyao.
"General!"
