Chapter 58 -58 You Have No Place in My Heart

Jing Zheng’s words were like a curse,

reverberating in Ji Muye’s ears incessantly until he returned to the ward and saw Lu Xining taking care of the two children at breakfast.

The female assistant was holding Lu Nuonuo as she came over, while Ji Muye stood at the entrance of the ward, gazing at the one adult and two small figures inside, his eyes profound and inscrutable in their darkness.

Seeing Little Dumpling, Ji Chao and Ji Ze were both very excited.

“Sister!”

Lu Nuonuo clambered down from the female assistant’s arms, bypassed the man at the door, and scurried towards them, plunging into Lu Xining’s embrace.

...

“Mommy, hug.”

Lu Xining lifted her daughter onto her lap, and Little Dumpling, still holding her milk bottle, waved to Ji Chao and Ji Ze while drinking.

“Brother~”

The three little ones hadn’t seen each other for two days and their affection was strong.

Ji Chao and Ji Ze’s health was gradually improving, and there was a big lawn downstairs where the children could play, with Lu Xining joining them.

Ji Muye had stayed at the ZN Laboratory for a week, and although relatives weren’t usually allowed to stay that long, his special status was an exception.

Today was his last day in the lab.

Before leaving, he had something he wanted to say to Lu Xining, but she cut him off before he could even speak.

“I’ve contacted the person for you, whether you reach an agreement is your business.”

“The person I met wasn’t Professor X, it was Jing Zheng.”

A flicker of surprise passed through Lu Xining’s eyes. She had asked her senior from the hospital to help, as he was also a well-known Doctors Without Borders figure internationally.

She had not expected Jing Zheng to be the one to show up.

She eyed him warily, “Do you know people from the Jing family?”

The defensive look in Lu Xining’s eyes was like a piece of wet paper plastered over his face, an ancient form of punishment that stole his breath and left him suffocating.

Ji Muye spoke indifferently, “I’ve met them, but I’m not well acquainted.”

His answer added a weight to Lu Xining’s heart, making her think of the lifeless way Jing Zheng looked when he was first picked up.

“Ji Muye, if you dare to disclose Jing Zheng’s identity, I will never forgive you.”

This was the first time Lu Xining threatened him.

For another man.

“Lu Xining, just how big is your heart?”

“The ones I know about: first love, husband, lover, just how many men are still there in your heart?”

Lu Xining did not want to explain more about the scenarios he had concocted in his mind.

She simply looked at him with a faint smile, “Ji Muye, don’t worry,”

“no matter how many pieces there are, there won’t be a piece for you.”

Beneath the sunshine, her skin was as smooth as jade, her bright eyes glimmering, yet every word she uttered was like the ice of winter’s frost, sharp and cutting.

Ji Muye tried to find insincerity in her eyes, but found instead her genuine well-wishes and her eyes filled with honesty.

His heart felt like it was being clenched, numbness spreading to his limbs.

The two of them, one standing and one sitting, were wrapped in a faint standstill atmosphere that ended up being broken by the three little ones running over.

“Daddy, the kite is stuck in the tree.”

“Lift me onto your shoulders, I’ll get it.”

Ji Ze grabbed Ji Muye’s hand and walked towards the tree the kite was tangled in, eager to try and retrieve the kite himself.

The man’s Adam’s apple bobbed, the words at his mouth swallowed back down, as he picked up Ji Ze to fetch the kite.

Ji Chao and Lu Nuonuo came over to Lu Xining for a drink. She wiped the fine sweat from the children’s foreheads and fed them water.

When Lu Xining took Ji Ze’s water bottle over to him, he was sitting on Ji Muye’s shoulders, stretching his hand towards the kite in the tree.

But the next second—

Ji Ze’s center of gravity suddenly shifted backward!

“Be careful!”

She hurried forward, hands outstretched to catch the falling Ji Ze.

The man also reached out to embrace the child falling behind him.

Their hands met on the child’s body, and a jolt shot through them from their fingertips to their brains.

Without time to think or hesitate, they both moved to protect the child.

In the end…

Lu Xining embraced Ji Ze.

And she, together with Ji Ze, was tightly held in Ji Muye’s arms.

The incident occurred so abruptly that all three of them still displayed unresolved panic on their faces.

She gently patted the child’s back, soothing him tenderly, “Don’t be afraid, Xiao Ze, it’s alright now, Mommy caught you.”

Preoccupied with the child, she hadn’t yet realized that she was also being held in the man’s arms.

By the time she became aware of the stiffness by her side, Ji Muye had already let go of her and looked down at Ji Ze in her arms.

Ji Chao and Lu Nuonuo, too, had witnessed the hair-raising scene and hurried over to comfort Ji Ze.

The latter blinked, his gaze shifting back and forth between Lu Xining and Ji Muye; the feeling of being held simultaneously by them made him somewhat reluctant to part.

…The embrace of both Mom and Dad was equally warm.

The two children had just recovered, and Lu Xining, concerned they might not withstand too much, suggested they go back to their rooms to rest.

But Ji Ze was thoroughly enjoying himself.

“Mommy, let go of the kite.”

“Dad, run faster, the kite is falling!”

To go along with the child, the two had to set aside the recent unpleasantness and joined the three little ones in flying kites for a good while.

Each moment on the lawn

Was being watched from upstairs by Jing Zheng.

It had been a long time since Ji Muye had played with the two children like this.

His gaze settled on the faces of Ji Chao and Ji Ze.

Under the sunlight, the two similar and fair faces took on a faint flush from the running around, their laughter echoing, their eyes filled with joyful smiles.

Having grown tired of the kites,

The children then started to play a game of blind man’s buff.

Ji Ze’s personality was becoming more and more lively.

He hopped and skipped over to Ji Muye and, pointing at his tie, asked, “Dad, could you lend me your tie for a bit?”

After getting the tie, he ran over to Lu Xining.

“Mom, use this to cover your eyes.”

She looked at the blue tie in her son’s palm, pursed her lips, and hesitated.

She was just about to suggest going back to her room to fetch her own scarf when she took it after seeing the look of longing in Ji Ze’s eyes.

It was rare to see Ji Ze so happy; she didn’t want to disappoint him.

After all, it was just a tie, no big deal.

Five minutes later.

Lu Xining’s eyes were wrapped with Ji Muye’s tie, Ji Chao led Lu Nuonuo hiding not far away, and Ji Ze ran even further…

Little Dumpling couldn’t contain her giggles and was quickly caught by her.

Ji Chao, who had been leading her, also got caught in the process.

Now, only Ji Ze, who had been silent, remained. He carefully moved his feet, avoiding the direction in which Lu Xining reached out to catch someone.

The air was filled with the scent of flowers.

A breeze blew past, she caught the scent of her child, and with a lifted corner of her mouth, she walked toward a certain direction.

Lu Xining reached out: “Xiao Ze, Mommy has caught you~”

The moment her hand touched the other party, she immediately sensed something was amiss.

The cool touch, like that of a wheelchair.

She felt upwards still blindfolded and her hand touched a cold hand with clear knuckles, long fingers.

Followed by a wrist…thin and somewhat bony.

Lu Xining slowly stood up, pulling off the tie from her eyes, and the first thing she saw was the radiant and smiling eyes of Jing Zheng.

“Sister Ning, look who it is?”

Her gaze drifted downward, meeting a pair of amber eyes, crystalline and luminous, as ever aloof, with a strong sense of distance.

Behind her, Ji Muye, holding Ji Ze, wore a cold expression, his thin lips pressed into a tight line, and those inscrutable black eyes, now as cold as the depths of a dark lake, stared intently at the person in the wheelchair.

Sitting in the wheelchair was unexpectedly…
