Chapter 182: Chapter 185: Renee Sinclair’s Choice

"What?!!!"

Mina Jennings’s face paled in shock.

"She’s going into labor?!" Julia Dawson scrambled over, dropping to her knees beside Sonia Quincy with a THUD.

"What do we do? What do we do now that she’s in labor?!!!" She spread her hands helplessly, her face ashen as she asked Mina Jennings.

Mina Jennings held Sonia Quincy in her arms, every word she spoke trembling. "What do we do? Call an ambulance!!"

"...Oh, call an ambulance, call an ambulance..." It was Julia Dawson’s first time encountering a situation like this, and she was nearly scared witless.

She crawled, trembling, to the front of the sofa and snatched Sonia Quincy’s phone from the corner. The livestream was still running. She shut it off immediately, then went to dial 911.

But her fingers were shaking so much that she misdialed the numbers several times.

"Sonia, Sonia, hang in there! We’ve already called for an ambulance!!" Mina Jennings shouted, making sure Sonia Quincy could hear her every word.

Sonia Quincy gasped for breath, nodding with her eyes closed.

"How are you feeling?" Mina Jennings asked.

Sonia Quincy’s brow was deeply furrowed. "It hurts," she said, her voice weak. "My stomach hurts so much... If I’d known this would happen, I wouldn’t have laughed so smugly..."

Mina Jennings had been on the verge of tears, but hearing Sonia Quincy’s words, she suddenly let out a laugh.

"Serves you right for showing off." She laughed through her tears. "Don’t you know your own condition? Couldn’t you have just been a little more low-key, a little more careful?"

Sonia Quincy took a deep breath. She could feel the pain spreading to her spine, but what made her even more uncomfortable was the damp, sticky feeling in her lower body.

"Mina, am I bleeding...?" she asked, grabbing Mina Jennings’s arm. Her mind was filled with images from TV shows of pregnant women bleeding from the waist down during premature labor.

Mina Jennings glanced down at the floor, then shook her head. "No, you’re not bleeding. Your water broke."

"Phew..." Hearing this, Sonia Quincy let out a sigh of relief.

"Get out!! All of you, get the hell out!!!"

Cecilia Quincy was still raging outside the door. Seeing that Sonia Quincy was about to give birth only made her frenzy intensify.

"Sonia Quincy!! You fucking bitch, I hope you die a horrible death!! You and your baby are both going to die on the operating table!!!"

"Shut up!!" Renee Sinclair charged in from outside, grabbing Cecilia Quincy by the collar and yanking her away from the doorway.

Cecilia Quincy was caught completely off guard. Renee Sinclair’s shove nearly sent her sprawling to the floor.

She stumbled back several steps, and the moment she regained her footing, she lunged forward again like a rabid dog.

"Renee Sinclair, you’re fucking crazy! You actually teamed up with Sonia Quincy to trick me—"

"SLAP!"

Renee Sinclair’s answer was a single, crisp slap.

"Ahh!!" she shrieked, clumsily covering her face with her hands.

Renee Sinclair pointed at her and warned in a cold voice, "Watch your filthy mouth! Or I’ll slap you again!"

"..." Cecilia Quincy said nothing, only glaring daggers at Renee Sinclair with bloodshot eyes.

Renee Sinclair’s expression was icy. "If you keep acting like a lunatic, it won’t be just a slap next time."

With that, she shot Cecilia Quincy one last venomous glare and strode into the office.

"Sonia! How are you doing?"

Sonia Quincy didn’t look well. Renee Sinclair was getting anxious and suggested, "Why don’t we carry her to my car? I can drive her to the hospital."

"No," Mina Jennings disagreed. "The ambulance will be here within ten minutes. It’s not safe to move Sonia in her condition. We should just wait for it."

"Can Sonia hold on that long?" Renee Sinclair knelt and took Sonia Quincy’s hand.

Sonia Quincy answered through gritted teeth, "I can hold on. Let’s wait for the ambulance."

Renee Sinclair frowned. "All right."

The ambulance arrived faster than they expected. When the WEE-OO WEE-OO of the siren sounded outside the studio, Mina Jennings and the others finally felt a knot of tension release.

Paramedics in white coats jogged in, and the studio employees blocking the doorway consciously parted to make way.

Sonia Quincy was in too much pain to speak. Her hand clutched her stomach unconsciously as the paramedics lifted her onto the stretcher.

Renee Sinclair followed the stretcher, hurrying out. But just then, a long-absent, mechanical female voice suddenly echoed in her mind.

’Host, an opportunity is right in front of you. Are you really going to let it pass?’

The voice spoke, its tone laced with amusement and deep meaning.

Renee Sinclair froze. ’What opportunity?’ she asked blankly in her mind.

’Sonia Quincy is Felix Preston’s wife. If she and the child both die in the delivery room, wouldn’t your redemption mission be free of obstacles?’

’...What are you talking about?’ Renee Sinclair’s body went rigid, the color draining from her face in an instant.

The voice repeated: ’I said, if Sonia Quincy and her child die in the delivery room, then you can stay by Felix Preston’s side, perfectly justified.’

’Sonia Quincy is the biggest obstacle to your mission. Only if she dies can you carry out your task smoothly. Mission success, you live; mission failure, you’ll be obliterated by the system along with me.’

’You don’t want to die in this strange world, do you?’

’...What are you planning?’ Watching as Sonia Quincy was wheeled out of the studio, Renee Sinclair held her breath and asked, her voice strained.

The voice said: ’Just nod, and I’ll give you some Affection Points on credit. You can use them to exchange for items in the back-end store. And then we can have Sonia Quincy die in the delivery room, without anyone ever knowing why.’

The female voice was so cold it sent an uncontrollable shiver through Renee Sinclair’s body.

Her rationality wavered for a second, caught between the mission and a human life. But only for a second. Then, she made her choice decisively.

"You’re fucking sick!" she cursed angrily, then took off running after them.

’Alas...’

The voice sighed regretfully in her head.

"Get lost!" Renee Sinclair cursed again.

"Sonia?"

Felix Preston had just gotten out of the car when he saw Sonia Quincy being wheeled out on a stretcher by the paramedics.

Sonia Quincy’s face was ashen, her forehead beaded with cold sweat from the torment of the pain. One hand gripped the stretcher’s railing tightly, while the other pressed hard against her stomach.

"Sonia..."

Felix Preston’s heart sank. He knew what was happening the moment he saw her.

"Sonia!!" he yelled her name hoarsely, lunging forward on his crutch.

But the crutch was too clumsy. He had taken less than two steps before he fell to the ground in a heap.

"Brother!!"

"Felix Preston!"

Lynn Preston and Jasper Linden scrambled to help him up, trying to support him as he rushed forward, but he found it too slow. He tossed the crutch aside and started running on his still-unhealed left leg.

The fracture in his left leg hadn’t fully healed yet. Running on it like this meant the last two months of recovery were basically all for nothing.

A sharp, needle-like pain shot straight into the marrow of his bones, but even as his face went pale with agony, Felix Preston didn’t dare stop.
