Chapter 144: Chapter 147: An Intentional Encounter
--???
--Why are you looking into him? Are you falling for him all over again?
Renee Sinclair didn’t understand.
Sonia Quincy: Pfft! As if! I’m looking up his schedule because I need to get something I want from him.
Renee Sinclair thought for a moment, then guessed: The WeChat screenshots Martin Thornton mentioned?
Sonia Quincy: Yes.
To clear Felix Preston of being framed for harassing a man, Martin Thornton’s recording alone wasn’t nearly enough. Sonia Quincy had to get more convincing evidence to completely demolish Cecilia Quincy!
Renee Sinclair: I understand. I’ll have someone look into it for you right now.
Sonia Quincy: Thank you!
Renee Sinclair didn’t reply.
But after hesitating for a few seconds, Sonia sent another message.
--Renee Sinclair, why are you still willing to help me? We agreed this was a transaction, but right now, you’re the only one holding up your end. I haven’t helped you at all.
There was a long silence from Renee Sinclair’s side. Sonia Quincy had already picked up her tablet and sketched the rough outline of an earring before a new message popped up.
--Sonia Quincy, you and I are not the same. I’m the only daughter of the Sinclair Group. Something that might be as difficult as climbing to the heavens for you, I can solve with a wave of my hand. The conditions you set for me were too simple; I can easily complete them by just spending a little money. But you’re different. You have to convince someone who utterly detests me to develop some good feelings for me. That’s something money can’t buy.
--I already anticipated these last two failed connections, so I don’t think it’s a big deal.
--I agreed to this deal myself, and I won’t call it off over a few minor failures. You don’t need to feel bad, because everything you owe me now, you’ll pay back to me, bit by bit, in the future.
--Sonia Quincy, don’t celebrate too soon. The day Felix Preston actually develops feelings for me, you won’t be smiling anymore.
Renee Sinclair had sent four messages in a row. Sonia Quincy read each one carefully, but instead of getting upset, she just laughed.
--Renee Sinclair, there will never be a day I can’t smile. Because even if Felix Preston does develop good feelings for you, it won’t be the kind you’re thinking of.
--You still don’t understand him. Squeezing out just enough goodwill to save your skin is probably the best you can hope for.
Renee Sinclair: Don’t be so quick to jump to conclusions. We’ll see what my limits are in the future.
Sonia Quincy: Then let’s see what you’ve got. In any case, I’m only going to help you earn enough goodwill to save your skin.
Renee Sinclair: I know. I have to go. I just got an update on the Cecilia Quincy matter. I’ll deal with it and get back to you.
Sonia Quincy: Thanks.
The chat ended there. Sonia Quincy put her phone away and went back to drawing, fully focused.
Felix Preston only slept for half an hour before waking up. The moment he was up, he immediately called Evan Yates to discuss hiring someone.
Sonia Quincy sat on the sofa, quietly and secretively working on her own task. She kept him company in silence, careful not to make a sound and disturb him.
Renee Sinclair worked fast. Two days later, Sonia received Ethan Lockwood’s itinerary for the next three days.
She hesitated between several locations before finally choosing one that would seem less deliberate.
"Lynn isn’t working today. I’ll have her go with you. Your workplace is so far, I’m a little worried."
Just as she was about to leave, Felix Preston wrapped Sonia Quincy in his arms and, in a cloyingly sweet manner, nuzzled her neck with his nose.
The nuzzling gave Sonia Quincy goosebumps, and she couldn’t help but raise a hand to block his face.
"Lynn’s day off has already been claimed by Liam Joyce. I can’t have her come with me."
"Liam Joyce claimed it?" Felix Preston’s eyes narrowed slightly. He opened his mouth and bit down on the fleshy part of Sonia’s palm, but he let go a few seconds later and lovingly kissed the warm row of teeth marks he’d left.
"He thinks he can just claim her time? Who the hell does he think he is?"
The glasses on the bridge of his nose felt hard against her hand, so Sonia Quincy reached out and took them off for him. Felix Preston’s vision instantly blurred, and only Sonia’s pale, clear face remained in focus.
He loved this singular clarity, and his gaze on Sonia Quincy immediately grew more intense.
Sonia Quincy stroked his long eyelashes and recounted, in full detail, what Lynn Preston had told her over WeChat that morning.
"A couple of days ago, Lynn went on a business trip to the neighboring city with Liam Joyce and accidentally discovered his hands aren’t clean."
Felix Preston blinked deliberately, poking Sonia Quincy’s fingers with his eyelashes. "How are they not clean?"
Sonia Quincy’s lips curved into a mischievous smile. Then, she softly opened her mouth and spoke two words.
"Tax evasion."
As a businessman, the moment Felix Preston heard the term, he knew exactly what was going on with Liam Joyce.
"Oh?" He cocked an eyebrow, his expression immediately turning amused.
"So Lynn wants to dig up evidence of his illegal activities and send him to prison?"
Sonia Quincy nodded. "Send him if we can. If not, making him lose a layer of skin would be satisfying enough."
"I agree." Felix Preston was fully on board.
Sonia Quincy glanced at the time, felt she couldn’t delay any longer, and slipped out of Felix Preston’s embrace. Grabbing her bag, she rushed for the door.
"Hey—" Felix Preston’s eyes widened. He watched her retreating figure blur from sharp focus into a hazy shape and whimpered pitifully, "You haven’t kissed me yet..."
Sonia Quincy left the hospital and hailed a taxi straight to Downtown Aethelburg.
The intel from Renee Sinclair said that Ethan Lockwood had a lunch meeting at a high-end restaurant in the city center today. So, Sonia Quincy planned to stage a "chance" encounter there.
Downtown was always bustling, no matter the time. After getting out of the taxi, Sonia Quincy found a place to sit near the restaurant and quietly waited for Ethan Lockwood to appear.
About two hours later, Ethan Lockwood’s personal assistant appeared at the restaurant’s entrance.
Sonia Quincy watched intently for a few moments. Once she confirmed that Ethan Lockwood’s assistant was on his way out, followed by a number of people in suits, she quickly pulled a bottle of eye drops from her bag and squeezed several drops into her eyes.
The eye drops didn’t sting. After putting them in, Sonia Quincy blinked hard, and the liquid immediately streamed down her cheeks like real tears.
"Mr. Lockwood really is a man of great talent..."
Surrounded by a crowd, Ethan Lockwood walked out of the restaurant. He listened to the cliché flattery with a faint smile, only offering a few perfunctory responses.
"Mr. Lockwood, that person looks like Sonia Quincy."
Suddenly, his personal assistant, Collins, leaned in and whispered this in his ear.
He froze for a second, then abruptly lifted his head, his gaze following Collins’s to the outdoor café on the right.
In a corner at the edge of the café, a woman with a slender frame but a noticeable baby bump sat alone at a table. She wasn’t looking at her phone or doing anything else, just staring blankly into space.
Ethan Lockwood couldn’t see her face, but he could tell from her figure that it was Sonia Quincy.
"What is she doing here all by herself?" Ethan Lockwood frowned, his eyes filled with a mix of confusion and wariness.
Collins shook his head. "I don’t know, but I saw her wipe her eyes a few times. It looks like she’s crying."
