Chapter 141: Chapter 144: Try Sonia Quincy?
"Mr. Quincy, what are you doing here?"
Hannah Sutton walked quickly to Sonia Quincy and affectionately took her hand.
Sonia Quincy glanced at Renee Sinclair beside her and answered with a smile, "I’m here having dinner with a friend. What a coincidence to run into you."
Hearing this, Hannah Sutton followed her gaze and turned to look at Renee Sinclair. Renee recognized her first and politely greeted them, "Miss Sutton, Mr. Shaw."
"You are..." Hannah Sutton squinted, still not quite placing who Renee Sinclair was.
"Miss Sinclair, from the Sinclair Group." Mason Shaw placed a hand on Hannah Sutton’s shoulder, reminding her with a smile.
She blinked, the recognition of Renee Sinclair’s identity finally dawning on her.
"Oh, you’re Miss Sinclair! I’m so sorry, my memory isn’t the best. I didn’t recognize you at first."
"It’s alright." Renee Sinclair gave a polite smile, not taking it to heart. "We’ve only met once, Miss Sutton. It’s perfectly normal not to remember."
Hannah Sutton: "Thank you for being so understanding, Miss Sinclair. But I never would have thought you knew Mr. Quincy, too."
"Mr... Quincy?" The polite yet respectful title surprised Renee Sinclair. She shot Sonia Quincy a sideways glance, asking in confusion, "Why do you call her Mr. Quincy?"
"Well..." Seeing the confused look on Renee Sinclair’s face, Mason Shaw instantly realized that she probably didn’t know about Sonia Quincy’s identity as a jewelry designer.
So he turned to look at Sonia Quincy, only to find her with her head down, picking at her nails, wearing an expression that screamed, ’I don’t know anything, don’t look at me.’
Mason Shaw’s eyes darted slightly, and he took it upon himself to tell a little lie for Sonia Quincy. "It’s because Sonia Quincy’s WeChat name is ’Mr. Quincy.’ We just call her that for convenience."
Hannah Sutton was stunned for a moment, then quickly chimed in, "...That’s right. We just call her that because it’s easier."
Although she didn’t know why Mason Shaw was lying, thanks to the tacit understanding they had built over many years together, Hannah Sutton decisively chose to play along.
Sonia Quincy listened to their nonsense without saying a word, only stealthily giving the two of them a thumbs-up.
When Mason Shaw saw it, he couldn’t help but laugh.
"Have you eaten already, Mr. Quincy?" Hannah Sutton smoothly changed the subject, rescuing Sonia Quincy from her predicament.
Sonia Quincy nodded, replying in a hurry, "I’ve already eaten."
"What a shame." Hannah Sutton pouted, a look of disappointment on her face. "I was hoping to invite you to eat with us."
Sonia Quincy: "Next time, next time."
"Alright, then." Hannah Sutton let go of her hand and stepped back to Mason Shaw’s side. "We won’t disturb you and Miss Sinclair on your outing, then. Goodbye."
Sonia Quincy waved to her. "Goodbye."
They all turned at the same time and walked off in opposite directions.
"Hey," Renee Sinclair glanced back at the retreating figures of Mason Shaw and Hannah Sutton, asking in surprise, "how do you know people from the Shaw Family?"
Sonia Quincy lied through her teeth. "I met them a long time ago, back when I was still with the Quincy Family."
"That long ago?" Renee Sinclair’s eyes widened as she stared at her, her disbelief plain to see.
Sonia Quincy just hummed a nonchalant "mhm," offering no further explanation.
Renee Sinclair waited a few seconds for more, but when nothing came, she knew Sonia was unwilling to talk about it and didn’t have the nerve to press her further.
"Honey, not only do I think Mr. Quincy looks like Dad, but I also think she looks a lot like you."
After they had walked some distance, Hannah Sutton couldn’t resist voicing the little doubt that had been nagging at her.
"Especially the way she lowers her head and plays dumb—it’s like she was cast from the same mold as you."
"Huh?" Mason Shaw was shocked. "Why is it the ’playing dumb’ part that’s cast from the same mold as me?"
Hannah Sutton looked at him, her expression deadpan. "Because every time you mess up and try to play dumb with me, you look exactly like Mr. Quincy just did."
"Is... is the resemblance really that strong?" Mason Shaw raised a hand to touch his face, masking his guilt with a look of confusion.
Hannah Sutton nodded affirmatively. "Yes! It’s an uncanny resemblance! I even think Mr. Quincy sometimes looks like Mom!"
"Hey, honey, do you think it’s really possible for people who aren’t related by blood to look so much alike?"
"...What are you trying to say?" Mason Shaw furrowed his brow, looking down at Hannah Sutton.
Hannah Sutton thought for a moment, then said honestly, "I think... Mr. Quincy might really have some kind of connection to our family."
"But... but Mr. Quincy’s parents have already been identified. Her biological parents are in Xenning, so what connection could she possibly have with us?" Although Mason Shaw couldn’t help but speculate himself, the fact that Sonia Quincy’s birth parents had been found was indisputable. He didn’t dare joke about it.
Hannah Sutton pressed her lips together, pondering for several seconds before speaking. "Identified... How can you be so sure her biological parents have been identified? Did they do a DNA test?"
Mason Shaw stared at the floor tiles receding evenly beneath his feet and said in a low voice, "I don’t know if they did a DNA test or not. All I know is that Mr. Quincy’s adoptive parents are one of the wealthiest families in Aethelburg. For a family like the Quincy Family, if they decided to send their adoptive daughter back, they would definitely have confirmed the identity of her biological parents beforehand."
But Hannah Sutton didn’t see it that way. "There’s always a ’what if.’ What if the Quincy Family never actually confirmed who Mr. Quincy’s biological parents were? What if they just assumed that the couple who accidentally took Cecilia Quincy home were Mr. Quincy’s real parents?"
"Back when we found out that the child we raised was swapped at birth, didn’t we also just assume that the child with her biological parents was our Charlotte?"
"..." This time, Mason Shaw fell silent.
Hannah Sutton took his hand, lacing her fingers intimately with his. "Honey, let’s just try, okay? What if Mr. Quincy is the one?"
"..." Mason Shaw’s brow furrowed in conflict, and for a long moment, he didn’t answer.
Hannah Sutton squeezed his palm. "Honey?"
He took a deep breath and said in a strained voice, "If we’re going to try, we have to do it ourselves. We absolutely cannot tell Mom and Dad. They’ve already been through too many disappointments. I’m afraid if this doesn’t work out, it’ll just be another blow to them."
Hannah Sutton: "Deal! I’ll find a time to ask Mr. Quincy out another day, then figure out a way to get a strand of her hair."
Mason Shaw: "Okay. Mr. Quincy is pregnant. Be careful, don’t scare her."
"Don’t worry!" Hannah Sutton raised an eyebrow confidently. With this newfound hope, she was filled with excitement and exhilaration.
"I know how to handle it. I definitely won’t scare Mr. Quincy."
