Chapter 136: Chapter 139: Perhaps It’s Retribution

Serenity Sanatorium, in the eastern suburbs of Aethelburg.

Beneath a dreary, gray sky, a lifeless white building stood starkly.

Sonia Quincy got out of the car. Before she even got close to the sanatorium’s main entrance, a chilling aura washed over her, making her feel uneasy.

She frowned, instinctively cradling her belly as she stopped in her tracks.

Evan Yates also felt the sanatorium had a bad vibe, so he spoke up. "Sonia, why don’t you wait in the car? I’ll go get Yvette Fuller."

Sonia Quincy nodded and was about to agree, but in the next instant, she saw a woman in a light blue trench coat walking out of the sanatorium.

The woman had a chin-length bob, a pale complexion, and a gaunt figure. She was carrying a dark blue insulated lunch box.

"Hey, isn’t that Yvette Fuller?" Sonia Quincy tapped Evan Yates’s arm and pointed toward the woman.

Evan Yates took a closer look, quickly matching the woman’s face to the photograph of Yvette Fuller in his mind. Then, he said with certainty, "That’s her."

Without hesitation, he raised his voice and called out to the woman’s retreating back, "Yvette Fuller!"

Yvette Fuller stopped at the sound of her name, turning to look at Evan Yates with a bewildered expression.

Evan Yates gave Sonia Quincy’s sleeve a slight tug, and she walked toward Yvette Fuller with him.

"You are..."

Watching the two strangers approach her directly, Yvette Fuller took a wary step back, her face etched with vigilance.

"Hello, Yvette Fuller." Sonia Quincy didn’t beat around the bush. After the brief greeting, she introduced herself directly. "I’m Felix Preston’s wife, Sonia Quincy."

"Felix Preston... Sonia Quincy..."

Hearing those two names, a flicker of blankness crossed Yvette Fuller’s eyes. It seemed she had forgotten who Felix Preston was.

Sonia Quincy kindly reminded her, "Felix Preston. The Felix Preston from the Preston Group."

"The Preston Group!" At those two words, the color drained from Yvette Fuller’s face.

Her eyes widened slightly, and a hint of panic crept into her gaze as she looked at Sonia Quincy.

But she didn’t ask why Sonia Quincy was looking for her; she already had a clear answer in her heart.

Sonia Quincy knew she was a smart woman and didn’t bother with pleasantries. She simply stepped aside, clearing a path for her.

"Where would you like to talk?"

Yvette Fuller thought for a few seconds, then raised her hand and pointed to a circular bench built around a nearby tree.

"Let’s go over there."

Sonia Quincy: "Alright."

It was late October, and the weather in Aethelburg had already turned cold and gloomy. Sitting by the side of the main road in the incessant chilly wind, even the warmest person would be chilled to the bone.

Yet, Yvette Fuller insisted on talking with Sonia Quincy here. Perhaps she felt that being outdoors was much safer than in a car or a restaurant.

In just one morning, a thick layer of fallen leaves had accumulated on the bench. Evan Yates strode over and deftly swept half of them away so Sonia Quincy and Yvette Fuller could sit down.

"Thank you," Yvette Fuller said politely before carefully sitting down, holding her belly.

Sonia Quincy watched her movement, then looked at the noticeable baby bump hidden under her loose trench coat and black top. A sudden shock went through her.

"You’re pregnant?"

"Yes." Yvette Fuller stroked her belly. As she spoke, she glanced up at Sonia Quincy’s own baby bump, which was even larger than hers. "I’m five months pregnant. I imagine I’m about two months behind you."

"Oh..." Sonia Quincy nodded, then sat down next to her.

When two pregnant women meet, it’s almost instinctual to start talking about their babies.

"When’s your due date?" Sonia Quincy asked.

Yvette Fuller replied in a gentle voice, "My due date is next year, in February. Right on New Year’s Eve, actually. What about you?"

Sonia Quincy narrowed her eyes in thought. "Mine is in December, I think two days before New Year’s Day."

"That’s nice," Yvette Fuller said with a smile. "Those are both good dates."

"Mm," Sonia Quincy replied with a smile of her own.

Truthfully, before seeing Yvette Fuller in person, Sonia Quincy’s plan had been to get straight to the point. But now, seeing this pregnant woman who also had to care for the physically and mentally broken Ronan Quinn, she suddenly wanted to talk about something else.

"Yvette Fuller, do you live here by yourself?"

Yvette Fuller: "Yes, I live alone."

Sonia Quincy frowned. "What about your parents and your in-laws? Hasn’t anyone come to help you?"

Yvette Fuller shook her head. "My parents are far away in Suthgard; I married into a family here in Aethelburg. Suthgard is a remote region, and transportation isn’t very convenient. My parents are old-fashioned farmers through and through; all they know is tilling the fields and feeding pigs at home. Even if I brought them here, they couldn’t help, and it would just make them worry needlessly."

"What about your in-laws?" Hearing this, Sonia Quincy already had a vague idea of the situation, but she couldn’t help but press on.

"Sigh..." Yvette Fuller let out a long sigh. "My in-laws live right here in Aethelburg, but neither of them wants anything to do with us."

"Why?" Evan Yates asked, stunned.

Perhaps because things had come to this, Yvette Fuller felt she had nothing left to hide. So, even though she didn’t know the person asking, she didn’t hesitate to air out all her family’s dirty laundry.

"Because they play favorites. They only like their younger son, the successful one who passed the civil service exam. They don’t like my husband, their older son, who got poor grades as a child and couldn’t even land a stable job as an adult."

"They’re both their sons, but only the younger one ever received their love. Now their older son has had a leg amputated and become a cripple. He’s also lost his mind and become a complete lunatic. They know everything, yet they haven’t even visited once to see him."

"So they just leave me, a pregnant woman, to fend for myself—struggling to make a living while also coming to this sanatorium to wait on a madman."

"’Struggling to make a living...’" Sonia Quincy picked up on something in that phrase. She tilted her head slightly, looking into Yvette Fuller’s eyes, which were filled with resentment and bitterness, and asked tentatively, "Yvette Fuller, are you out of money?"

Yvette Fuller gave a cold, self-mocking smile. "Every cent I’ve earned over the years has been sunk into hospitals and this sanatorium. How could I have any money left over to live on?"

Sonia Quincy listened intently. As soon as she finished, she immediately asked, "Since you’re in such a difficult situation, why not go to Azure Studio and find Liam Joyce? The thing you have should be able to fetch a good price from him."

"I..." Yvette Fuller choked on her words, her expression suddenly becoming unnatural. "I don’t dare to go..."

"Why not?" Sonia Quincy asked, already knowing the answer.

Yvette Fuller looked up at her, a faint smile playing on her lips. "Since you came looking for me, you must know why I don’t dare, right?"

Sonia Quincy blinked. "I do know. But I asked you that question on purpose, not to see you humiliate yourself, but to offer you two viable ways to make money."

"Are you interested?"
