Chapter 1740: Chapter 1741: Human Affection Has Faded

In the midst of the chaotic world, after Cheng Su recovered from her illness, life returned to tranquility. Her schedule remained as usual — taking care of the children, attending school, handling business — but after going through a series of events, she became more indifferent to life and death, and the expression on her face grew more serene and gentle.

Even Mother Qi, who was rather rough, noticed this change. She privately told the old man that Cheng Su seemed a bit different, though she couldn’t pinpoint exactly how. She just felt she wasn’t as sharp as before, yet still made people hesitant to overlook her. Even with a faint glance, people struggled to know where to place their hands and feet.

Cheng Su attended the election meeting for the women’s director of the compound. Although her husband was no longer part of the military unit, the house was still there, so she had the right to participate and vote.

Someone wanted to nominate Cheng Su for the election, but she refused. According to her, she might move to Guangcheng long-term next year, occasionally returning to Qing City. If she was elected and then left, a re-election would be needed, which was too troublesome, so it was better not to be elected in the first place.

Therefore, she only participated in the voting. Holding Qi Xiaoqi, she stood in the small square of the compound listening to the vote count with a group of family members.

On the stage, they announced who received votes; below the stage, Chunhua and Cheng Su were whispering softly to each other.

"In the past, Sister-in-law Gao did a pretty good job. Who knew later, when Gao Linbing had an accident, she suddenly took her son back to her hometown. Now looking at this election, it feels a bit strange. The yard hasn’t changed, but many people have, and now lots of people in the compound are unrecognizable and have nothing much to say," Chunhua sighed. "It was better before, people were more warm and friendly."

Cheng Su smiled and said, "That’s how it is. It’s still alright now, but as days get better, relationships become more indifferent, many with calculations. Neighbors, even if you live together for several years, sometimes you can’t even exchange a word."

Society in later generations developed rapidly; people became less simple, and the fast pace of life meant everyone was busy scrambling for life, who could leisurely sit around chatting?

Listening to this, Chunhua’s eyebrows sank deeper in gloom.

"Don’t be disheartened, getting along with people depends on chemistry. There will always be some who you click well with and build good relationships," Cheng Su comforted her upon seeing her like this.

Chunhua chuckled, "True. Let’s not talk about this. I heard you’re going to Guangcheng next year? Seems like our factory is moving too?"

She cared more about her future than neighborly interactions. Finally having climbed to a junior manager position, if the factory relocated, what would happen then?

"Xiao Qi’s father is in Zhu City; moving to Guangcheng brings us closer. As for the factory, one will be established in the South; whether this one will move remains to be seen," Cheng Su replied with a smile.

"Oh," Chunhua responded. "There are quite a few colleagues in the workshop worried about unemployment!"

"Whatever happens then, arrangements will be made; don’t worry, just do your job well," Cheng Su reassured her.

Chunhua nodded.

At this point, the election results were announced. Coincidentally, the director was Sister-in-law Zhong, who lived next door to Cheng Su. Cheng Su was quite satisfied; Sister-in-law Zhong was straightforward, warm-hearted, and had good cohesion, certainly fitting for the role.

Once the election ended, Cheng Su held Qi Xiaoqi and picked up a small stool to return home. Upon arriving, she heard Mother Cheng say that Ning Ge had come, currently at the restaurant, inviting her to join for a meal when she had time.

Cheng Su was a bit surprised. What was he, such a busy person, doing in Qing City?
