Chapter 442: Chapter 442: Missed Again
Spurred on by the person next to her, the young woman’s face darkened as she roared at Gu Jiaojiao.
"Who the hell do you think you are, girl? Let go of my son! Let go of my son right now!"
In her panic, she began clawing at Gu Jiaojiao’s hands, which angered Gu Jiaojiao so much that she sent the woman flying with a kick.
She landed right on the old woman, jarring her awake. The moment the old woman opened her eyes, she started wailing.
"Oh, good heavens! My precious grandson... he’s gone just like that... You jinx! Not only did you fail to look after your son, but now you’re crushing me?"
"Mom, it was that girl’s fault! She snatched Xiao Ming and kicked me!"
"Get up, you jinx!" she shrieked, her rage pivoting. "Where did this vixen come from, daring to snatch my precious grandson?! I’ll kill you!"
As she spoke, the old woman picked up a rock from the roadside, aiming to smash it on Gu Jiaojiao’s head.
With no time to dodge, Gu Jiaojiao closed her eyes, continuing to perform the Heimlich maneuver as she braced for the impact.
With a sudden "GACK—", the child in her arms spat out a piece of hard candy, gleaming and streaked with blood.
"Oh my god, she really saved him!" The old woman dropped the rock and fell to her knees before Gu Jiaojiao.
"This young lady really knows medicine!"
"See? I told you. A girl who looks like an immortal couldn’t possibly be a bad person."
"I remember now! She’s the one who saved Granny Bo last time."
"For real?"
"I’m positive. You don’t see many girls who look like an immortal."
"Then why didn’t you say anything earlier?"
"I was so scared I forgot, okay!"
Gu Jiaojiao paid no mind to the nonsense swirling around her. Seeing that the child was awake, she breathed a sigh of relief.
She looked down at the little boy. His face was still purplish, but his breathing was unobstructed, and his wide, wet eyes were staring up at her.
She gently set him on the ground. "Little one, don’t jump around while you’re eating candy next time."
With that, she turned and walked out of the crowd without a backward glance.
The gossiping crowd automatically parted to let her pass, then swarmed around the child again.
The young woman, seeing her son returned to her from the brink, rushed forward and hugged him, refusing to let go.
The old woman remained kneeling on the ground, reflecting on her actions. Just moments ago, she had genuinely wanted to kill her grandson’s savior with that rock.
She had been so close, just a hair’s breadth away. Even now, her hands and feet were ice-cold from the thought.
"What is wrong with you two? Aren’t you going to thank the person who saved him?"
It was Granny Bo, demanding angrily. She had rushed over after hearing the commotion, but by the time she arrived, she only saw Gu Jiaojiao’s retreating figure in the distance.
But she had recognized her instantly. Xiao Ming’s savior was her own.
The last time, at the Mu Family’s home, she had been too embarrassed to thank her savior to her face because of what her daughter had done.
"Granny Bo, you know her, right?" the young mother asked. "Please, can you tell us which building she lives in? We want to go and thank her properly."
Granny Bo snapped, "How should I know which building she’s in? I just heard people shouting that a young lady was saving someone on the main road, so I came running to see what was happening."
"Granny Bo, please don’t be angry," someone from the crowd chimed in. "That young lady is performing a public service. She’s not afraid of hardship or trouble; she provides first aid to anyone in need. She’s a good person."
"Hey, you from the Wu family! Weren’t you the one just now cursing that young lady, saying she wouldn’t even leave a corpse alone?"
"That’s right! The young lady was saving a life, so how did you twist it into something so sordid?"
"You, from the Wu family, I’m giving you some advice. At your age, you should learn to be more charitable with your words. Try learning from that young lady instead."
"Yes, exactly! Now you know what a real doctor is. Someone like that young lady, who isn’t afraid of baseless accusations while saving a life—that’s a true doctor."
"I bet that girl is a medical student. If she’d been timid, Xiao Ming wouldn’t have survived today!"
"Oh, you people! You think you’re always right just because you can run your mouths?"
Hearing the cacophony of voices, Granny Bo realized she had missed her chance again. She said nothing more and departed, her shoulders slumped.
’My daughter even called this morning, asking where our young benefactor lives.’
’She’s probably planning to drag the Lin Family over to the girl’s house to cause trouble. Tonight at dinner, I’m going to tell my sons we need to cut ties with that heartless woman.’
Gu Jiaojiao walked with a light step to Mu Shan’s car, where he was already holding the door open for her.
So, when a few curious onlookers tried to chase after her, all they got was a faceful of exhaust. Although they also lived in the large residential compound, they didn’t recognize the Mu Family’s car.
The pursuer only saw the young lady get into a luxury sedan. ’No wonder her medical skills are so good,’ he thought. ’She must come from a prominent family with a top-notch education.’
"Young Mistress, a couple of people were chasing us just now. Do you think they wanted to thank you?"
"It was just a small thing, no need for any reward. Let’s just hurry up and go."
"Our Young Mistress is truly as kind as she is beautiful," Mu Shan said, laying on the flattery with all the complimentary phrases he could muster. "So noble, saving someone without seeking any reward."
"Haha, you don’t have to praise me for something so minor," Gu Jiaojiao replied. "Serving the people is a basic duty, after all. It’s nothing worth mentioning."
Gu Jiaojiao said this with a hint of guilt. ’It’s not that I don’t want to be rewarded,’ she thought. ’It’s just too much of a hassle.’
’Mainly, my enemies are in the shadows while I’m out in the open. It’s best to be as careful as possible.’
’Besides, that mother- and daughter-in-law were dressed plainly. Even though they live in the compound, they’re probably from the dormitory-style apartments.’
’It’s really not worth exposing my medical skills for a pittance. But she wouldn’t tell Mu Shan any of this.’
When Gu Jiaojiao arrived home, Su Shuochi was just parking his car. He walked to the courtyard gate to greet her. "Honey, you’ve had a long day."
"It certainly was," Gu Jiaojiao said, getting out of the car cheerfully. "Mu Shan, we won’t keep you for dinner."
"The Mu Family has already made dinner, so I’ll eat at home," Mu Shan replied. Hearing this, he backed up the car and drove away.
Once Mu Shan’s car was gone, Gu Jiaojiao took Su Shuochi’s hand and began chattering away about her afternoon.
"Jiaojiao, are you saying you don’t have to give Mr. Li acupuncture starting tomorrow?" Su Shuochi asked, delighted.
"Mhm. Professor Xu is taking over Mu Ziquan’s treatments as well. I only need to visit the Mu Family on Saturday and Sunday to check on his progress."
"That’s wonderful. You must be hungry. I’ll go make us some food."
"Okay, I’ll help."
"Don’t you want to rest for a bit, honey?"
"No need. I soaked in the Spiritual Spring for a bit earlier, so I have plenty of energy. It’s more fun if we cook together."
The two of them cooked together, practiced their cultivation after eating, and then took a bath together.
As they soaked, Su Shuochi grew frisky. He scooped his wife into his arms, left the special dimension, and returned to their bedroom.
Knowing she had school the next day, Su Shuochi didn’t dare push things too far. Even so, Gu Jiaojiao was still too exhausted to keep her eyes open by the end.
He watched with amusement as his wife, though drowsy, clearly enjoyed being pampered by him.
His calloused fingers gently lifted her chin, and he placed a light kiss on her lips. "Sleep now."
