Chapter 89: Episode 089: Skoll’s Entrance.
"Stay back, Rue... It’s Skoll."
Iris coldly shouted in a low voice, though Rue could still sense the tremors.
Rue took a slow, silent step backward. She didn’t say a single word. She just watched her friend. The freezing wind whipped wildly through the room, but Rue didn’t even shiver. She was focused on Iris standing between her and the monster.
A second ago, Iris was sobbing, drowning in her own guilt. But right now, Iris stood tall. She squared her shoulders against the biting winter storm blowing through the shattered glass. She looked like a fierce mother stepping up to protect her tiny cub from danger.
Iris leaned forward. Her human body stretched. The winter coat tore loudly at the seams as thick, dark fur erupted directly from her pale skin. The sound of shifting bones popped loudly in the quiet room. It didn’t look painful. It looked entirely natural and incredibly fluid.
In just a few short seconds, she shifted into a beautiful black wolf.
The wolf was absolutely huge. Her thick black fur absorbed the pale moonlight shining through the storm. She lowered her large head. Her bright violet eyes glowed intensely in the dark shadows of the broken room.
Rue felt a cold spike of pure fear hit her chest. The giant black wolf was terrifying enough. The wild, feral beast growling near the broken window was even scarier. A single swipe from either of those massive claws could easily break her entirely in half.
But Rue didn’t show her fear. She forced her breathing to stay slow and entirely quiet.
She knew sudden movements scared wild animals. She just took another careful step backward, pressing her back flat against the cold stone wall near the hallway door.
She kept a very safe distance. She knew she didn’t have to fight. Help was definitely on the way. The sound of the shattering glass was incredibly loud. It echoed heavily down the quiet stone hallways.
Axel was right across the hall. Gianna was right next door. The royal guards were everywhere. They would all be here very soon. She just needed to stay perfectly still and wait for them to handle the danger.
While Rue stayed far away in the shadows, the black wolf moved.
Iris took a very slow, careful step forward. Her large paws crunched softly on the sharp, broken glass covering the floor.
The monster by the window reacted instantly.
Skoll was bigger than Iris. He was covered in thick, heavily matted gray fur. He looked entirely wild and completely starved. His fur was patchy, exposing old, terrible scars on his strong shoulders. He let out another deep, wet growl.
When Iris took a step toward him, Skoll took two steps backward. His sharp claws scraped loudly against the stone floor, leaving deep scratch marks in the stone. He kept his head low, baring his sharp white teeth in the dark.
Iris didn’t growl back. She didn’t act aggressive or territorial. She just took another slow, calm step forward.
Skoll backed up again. He moved away from her until his thick gray tail felt the wall beneath the window. He couldn’t back up any further. He just stood there, breathing heavily.
Iris kept approaching him. She slowly walked in a tight circle entirely around him. She stretched her neck out and sniffed his matted gray fur.
This was the only way she could communicate with him right now. She had to use her natural scent. She wanted him to smell her. She wanted him to realize who she was.
Skoll stood frozen against the cold wall. He let her sniff his shoulder. He let her smell the old, terrible scars hiding under his thick fur. He shook slightly, but he didn’t attack her.
Iris stopped right in front of him. She looked up into his wild, empty eyes. She slowly leaned her large black head forward. She opened her jaws and made a very gentle attempt to lick his snout.
But the wet touch ruined everything.
The second her tongue brushed against his fur, Skoll panicked.
He let out a deafening, heartbroken howl and the next moment, he jumped completely away from her.
Launching his body right toward the broken window frame. His heavy back paws kicked hard off the stone ledge, sending more glass flying into the air. He jumped straight out into the freezing, violent winter storm.
Iris intended to end this terrible nightmare right here and right now. She was never going to let him run away from her again.
The black wolf let out a howl. She rushed forward, her claws slipping slightly on the icy floor. She leaped right through the shattered window, chasing directly after Skoll into the falling snow.
"No!" Rue shouted loudly.
The sudden action completely broke Rue out of her shock. She couldn’t just stand there and watch her friend jump out of a high window into a freezing, deadly storm. She pushed herself off the wall. She rushed forward across the dark room.
She was entirely too late to stop the black wolf. Iris was already gone.
Rue ran toward the freezing wind blowing through the empty frame. She wanted to look outside. She wanted to see if they survived the long fall into the snow gardens below. She didn’t even notice the giant, jagged pieces of sharp glass sticking out of the wooden window frame right in front of her soft face.
She reached her bare hands out for the broken ledge.
Before she could even touch the sharp glass, a massive, warm hand grabbed her tightly by the waist.
A strong arm yanked her forcefully backward.
Rue gasped loudly as her back hit a solid chest.
"Be careful!" Axel said sharply.
The Alpha King held her completely secure against him. His deep voice rumbled right next to her ear. He pulled her safely away from the dangerous, broken glass.
Rue breathed heavily. Her heart was beating entirely out of control. She looked up at Axel’s sharp, perfect face in the pale moonlight. Gianna was standing right in the open doorway behind him, holding a bright iron lantern that cast long shadows across the empty bedroom.
"Axel," Rue begged quickly. She grabbed the thick fur of his winter coat with her trembling hands. "We have to go after them. Skoll is completely feral. He is terrified of her touch. He might hurt her. Please send the royal guards out right now."
Axel looked at the broken window. He felt the freezing wind hit his pale face. He watched the thick white snow blow right into his sister’s empty bedroom.
He didn’t yell for his guards. He didn’t look panicked at all. He just kept his strong arm wrapped safely around Rue’s waist.
Axel slowly shook his head.
"This is what they need."
