Chapter 235: [241]: A Stubborn Firewall

"Boss, you’re going to die!" Wraith yelled, taking a step toward the altar. "You have to disconnect!"

"Do not touch me, Wraith!" Valerie shrieked, her voice echoing with a fierce, unyielding corporate authority that made the Assassin freeze in his tracks.

She didn’t care about the pain. She didn’t care that her physical nervous system felt like it was being fed through a meat grinder. She gripped her carved oak staff so tightly her knuckles turned bone-white. She reached deep into the very core of Earth’s primary leyline, forcefully grabbing the entire, infinite mana pool of the planet.

"Galleon! Drop the final safety governors!" Valerie commanded, blood spilling over her lips. "Give me everything!"

"We’re going to blow a hole in the continent!" Galleon cried out, but the dwarf didn’t hesitate. He slammed his heavy boot down on the primary release lever.

CLANG!

BZZZZT!

The Astral Spire didn’t just fire; it erupted. A beam of pure, concentrated Earth-mana shot straight up, completely ignoring the physical ceiling of the Citadel, and punched a massive, flawless hole straight through the golden firewall encompassing the planet.

Back in the dark, suffocating abyss of the Juncture, the Architect Prime’s psychic deletion protocol was ninety-nine percent complete. Sebastian’s avatar was entirely white, his cracked porcelain mask smoothing out into a featureless dome.

Then, the universe aggressively hit the override button.

FWOOSH!

A blinding, breathtaking pillar of brilliant blue light slammed into the obsidian platform. It completely ignored the clinical, sterile presence of the Architect. The blue light didn’t just illuminate the dark; it forcefully shattered the white static enveloping Sebastian’s body.

From the center of that light, Valerie’s Astral Avatar materialized.

She looked exhausted, her translucent azure silk robes flickering with jagged lines of static, but her eyes burned with an absolute, terrifying stubbornness. She didn’t float gracefully. She dove. She threw herself onto the cold stone, wrapping her glowing blue arms tightly around Sebastian’s blank, unmoving form.

"Get your hands off my employee," Valerie snarled at the empty air.

The moment her astral form made contact with his sanitized avatar, the system violently protested.

[CRITICAL WARNING: UNAUTHORIZED NEURAL INTRUSION.] [TARGET EGO LOCKED BY ARCHITECT PRIME. DELETION CANNOT BE HALTED.]

"Watch me, you over-glorified calculator," Valerie hissed.

She didn’t try to cast a healing spell. She didn’t use magic. She forcefully shoved her own digital soul-data directly into Sebastian’s formatted hard drive. She acted as a raw, cryptographic firewall, intertwining her memories, her emotions, and her sheer human defiance into his empty code.

She shoved the memories back into his brain with brute force.

A cramped, rain-slicked apartment in 2077. The smell of cheap takeout and stale coffee. The heavy, comforting weight of a rusty iron dagger in his hand. The chaotic, blood-soaked arena of Ironhold. The exact, annoying pitch of her voice when she haggled over potion prices.

"Wake up, Seattle!" Valerie screamed into his mind, the psychic connection vibrating with her tears. "You don’t get to forget me! You don’t get to leave me alone with a grumpy dwarf and a paranoid assassin! Wake up!"

[WARNING: CONFLICTING DATA STREAMS. EGO RECONSTRUCTION IMMINENT.]

The Architect Prime’s clinical voice echoed smoothly, attempting to drown her out. "Your efforts are mathematically inefficient, biological entity. You cannot shield him from the foundational logic of the Core OS. Initiating double-deletion."

A wave of pure, white erasure energy swept down from the sky, aiming to delete Valerie’s astral projection entirely.

But the Architect had made a massive, catastrophic miscalculation.

When the white light hit Valerie’s avatar, it didn’t un-render her. It hit a brick wall of absolute, immovable data.

[ERROR. DELETION FAILED.] [TARGET ENTITY ANCHORED TO SERVER 894 CORE. CANNOT DELETE WITHOUT PURGING PLANETARY LEYLINE.] [ACCESS DENIED BY SOVEREIGN’S AEGIS FIREWALL.]

"You can’t touch me," Valerie laughed, a wet, bloody sound echoing in the astral plane. "He locked the door, and I have the only key."

The influx of Valerie’s memories acted like a spark in a powder keg. The white, sterile static covering Sebastian’s body violently bubbled. The smooth, featureless mask covering his face suddenly cracked down the center with a deafening SNAP.

Thick, oily black digital blood began to weep from the newly formed eye sockets. The jagged, red error runes carved into his chest flared back to life, burning away the pristine white code with localized bursts of corrupted green malware.

Sebastian gasped.

His physical voice returned, a ragged, distorted hum of overlapping audio files. "Holy shit... my head."

His eyes snapped open. The empty, dull gray completely vanished, replaced by the brilliant, burning silver light of the Sovereign of Laws. The absolute terror and emptiness of the lobotomy strike was entirely washed away by the grounding, profound warmth of Valerie’s arms around his neck.

"Valerie?" Sebastian wheezed, his heavy, static-laced hands slowly coming up to wrap around her glowing back.

"You absolute idiot," Valerie sobbed, resting her forehead against his cracked mask. "I thought I lost you. I thought you were gone."

"I just forgot my password for a second," Sebastian grunted, pushing himself up into a sitting position on the obsidian floor. He pulled her close, the phantom pain in his skull throbbing like a war drum. "Thanks for the reset."

He looked up at the dark sky of the Juncture. The oppressive, clinical weight of Architect Prime’s psychic presence was rapidly withdrawing, unable to process the illogical, emotional firewall Valerie had erected.

"Fascinating," the Architect’s voice whispered one last time, fading into the ambient background noise. "The variable remains unbroken. We will observe from the Core."

The silence returned to the void.

Sebastian looked down at Valerie. Her translucent projection was flickering heavily. On Earth, the physical toll of the psychic battle had been utterly devastating. He could feel her heartbeat slowing down through the tether.

"You need to log off, Princess," Sebastian said softly, his thumbs gently rubbing her glowing astral shoulders. "You did your job. The wipe failed. I have my brain back. If you stay connected any longer, you’re going to permanently damage your real body."

"I’m not leaving until you get inside the Core OS," Valerie stubbornly replied, though her voice was incredibly weak.

"I’ll get there. I promise," Sebastian smirked, the dark, cynical Drifter fully back online. "Now go to sleep. I have an operating system to crash."

Valerie offered a faint, exhausted smile. "Don’t do anything stupid, Seattle."

"No promises."

Her Astral Avatar slowly dissolved into a cloud of beautiful blue pixels, drifting away into the dark purple smog. The connection severed, leaving Sebastian entirely alone on the black stone platform.

He stood up, his heavy boots cracking the obsidian beneath his feet. The headache was monumental, but his ego was perfectly, flawlessly intact. He cracked his knuckles, staring out into the dark.

"Alright, management," Sebastian growled. "You wanted my attention. Now you have it."

——

The heavy, metallic thud of the Rusthound’s landing gear hitting the obsidian platform shattered the quiet of the Juncture. The ship looked like absolute hell. The starboard plasma engine was completely melted, trailing thick, black smoke into the vacuum of space, and the hull was violently scored with deep, jagged gouges from the atmospheric pressure of the Dead Servers.

The rusted cargo bay doors groaned and hissed open, violently kicking up a cloud of gray bone dust.

Sebastian turned away from the vast, empty dark of the void and walked toward the ship. He was fully rendered again in his black tactical suit, the green static of his [Error Accumulation] suppressed back down to a manageable, simmering hum in the back of his mind. His silver-tinged eyes were cold, entirely focused on the monumental task ahead.

Gwen stumbled out of the cargo bay first. The smuggler was clutching her ribs, her face pale and covered in a fine layer of soot. She was coughing violently, the air scrubbers on the skiff having failed ten miles back.

Corbin scrambled out right behind her, clutching a cracked datapad to his chest like a baby. The rogue code-smith looked like he was about to burst into tears.

"Are you okay?!" Gwen shouted, running up to Sebastian. She looked him up and down, checking for missing limbs or white static. "We saw the psychic strike hit you from the cockpit! You just dropped like a stone! We thought the Architect deleted your brain!"

"It tried," Sebastian replied flatly, casually wiping a smear of black digital blood off his cracked porcelain visor. "But I have a really aggressive antivirus program living in my basement back on Earth. She bailed me out."

"Praise the First Maker," Corbin squeaked, dropping to his knees on the dark stone. "I thought we were going to be trapped out here forever."

Sebastian looked past them at the smoking, hissing wreckage of the Rusthound. The ship was actively dying. The localized gravity dampeners were sparking wildly, and the primary mana-conduits were completely fried.

"How’s the ship, Seattle?" Sebastian asked.

Gwen let out a harsh, bitter laugh. "The ship is a paperweight, Boss. We blew the main thruster trying to outrun the Cleaners, and the localized gravity out here in the deep Juncture has completely warped the sub-frame."
