Chapter 5: Whispers from the Burning Blood

Chapter 5

The letter burned a hole in Reaper’s cut like a live coal pressed against his skin.

Back at the clubhouse, the war room buzzed with barely contained rage.

Rowe stood beside the long oak table, arms crossed tightly over her chest, watching as Reaper spread the surviving documents under the harsh overhead light. The air was thick with cigarette smoke and the metallic tang of blood from the earlier fight. Every patched member present felt the shift—the delicate balance of power tilting toward open war.

Reaper’s jaw was locked so tight she feared it might crack.

He hadn’t looked at her directly since they’d returned.

Not since that devastating kiss against the ranch house.

The memory of his mouth on hers still lingered, a dangerous heat that refused to fade.

Ghost leaned over the table, squinting at the aged paper.

"Cal always said the truth was buried deep. ’In the blood,’ he wrote. What the hell does that mean, Prez?"

Reaper’s eyes flicked to Rowe for a split second—guarded, tormented—before returning to the letter.

"It means we’ve got a traitor in our ranks. Or worse."

The words landed like a grenade.

Murmurs erupted.

Viper slammed a fist on the table.

"We bleed for this club. Accusations like that get people killed."

Rowe stepped forward, voice steady despite the storm inside her.

"My father died for this club. My brother, too. If a snake is wearing our colors, I want its head on a spike."

Several members nodded in grim approval.

Others stared at her with new respect—and suspicion.

Lila, lounging against the far wall, smirked like she was watching a soap opera unfold.

Reaper straightened to his full height, the president’s patch on his cut seeming heavier than ever.

"Church is closed to outsiders tonight. Rowe... wait in my room."

Her temper flared.

"I’m not some clubhouse whore you can send to bed when things get serious."

The room went dead silent.

Reaper’s eyes flashed with dark heat.

In two strides, he was in front of her, voice low enough for only her to hear.

"You’re not a whore. You’re a liability until you prove otherwise. My room. Now. Or I’ll carry you there myself."

The threat—and the promise beneath it—sent unwanted electricity racing down her spine.

She held his gaze for a long, charged moment, then turned on her heel and left.

But she didn’t go to his room.

Not immediately.

Instead, she slipped down the hallway toward the dorms, mind racing.

The letter.

The truth is in the blood.

Her blood?

The club’s bloodline?

Or something literal—like DNA, records, or a hidden ledger written in someone’s actual blood?

She found an empty dorm room and slipped inside, closing the door softly.

Her hands were still shaking from the adrenaline of the night.

Killing a man.

Kissing Reaper.

Watching her past go up in flames.

It was too much.

A soft knock made her tense.

The door opened before she could answer.

Reaper filled the doorway, silhouetted by the hall light.

He stepped inside and locked the door behind him with a quiet click that sounded far too final.

"I told you my room," he said, voice rough.

"I’m not good at following orders."

A ghost of a smile touched his lips—there and gone.

"I’m starting to remember that."

He crossed the small space until they were nearly touching.

The room felt too small for a man like him.

"You shouldn’t be here, Rowan. Not in my world. Not this close to me."

"Yet you kissed me like you’ve been starving for it."

He exhaled sharply, backing her toward the bed until her knees hit the mattress.

"One taste. That’s all it was supposed to be. But you’ve always been my weakness."

Rowe’s heart thundered.

She reached up, tracing the new scar through his eyebrow.

"Then stop fighting it. Tell me what you know about my father’s death."

Reaper caught her wrist, but didn’t pull away.

Instead, he pressed her palm flat against his chest, right over his heart.

It was pounding as hard as hers.

"Your father was negotiating a truce with the Disciples. A big one. Money, territory, peace. Someone inside our club didn’t want that peace. They sold him out."

Her breath caught.

"And you? Were you part of the deal?"

His eyes darkened with old pain.

"I backed him. But I wasn’t there the night it went bad. By the time I got the call..."

He trailed off, swallowing hard.

"I found him. Held him while he bled out. His last words were about you and Cade. Protecting you."

Tears burned Rowe’s eyes, but she refused to let them fall.

"Then why send me away? Why let Cade stay?"

"Because I thought distance would keep you safe from the rot inside these walls."

His other hand slid into her hair, tilting her head back.

"I was wrong. And now you’re here, digging up ghosts, making me want things I have no right to want."

The kiss that followed was slower this time—deeper, more devastating.

Reaper kissed her like a man confessing sins and claiming salvation in the same breath.

His hands roamed down her back, pulling her flush against him.

Rowe melted into the heat, fingers digging into his shoulders, tasting the desperation on his tongue.

They tumbled onto the bed, a tangle of limbs and leather.

His weight pressed her down, delicious and overwhelming.

For a few stolen minutes, there was no club, no murder, no war—just the scorching slide of mouths and the urgent press of bodies.

Reaper pulled back with a groan, hovering above her, breathing ragged.

"We can’t. Not like this. Not until you know everything."

Rowe reached for him again, but he caught her hands, pinning them above her head.

The dominance in the move sent a thrill through her.

"Then tell me everything," she challenged, arching against him.

"No more secrets."

A heavy knock interrupted them.

Viper’s voice was urgent.

"Prez! We’ve got a rat. One of the prospects just tried to sneak out with club intel. He’s talking about a deal with the Disciples involving Cal’s old papers."

Reaper cursed violently and pushed off the bed, helping Rowe up.

His eyes were wild with lust and fury.

"Stay here. Lock the door."

But as he reached for the handle, another sound echoed down the hall—shouts, followed by a single gunshot.

Reaper’s expression turned lethal.

"They’re already inside."

Rowe grabbed the gun from the nightstand.

Side by side with the man who had just kissed her breathless, she faced the door as footsteps pounded closer.

The rat wasn’t just selling secrets.

He was leading the enemy straight to her—

and to the truth written in blood.
