Chapter 18: The Truth She Carried in Her Blood
Chapter 18
Machines breathed for Elena, where her body could no longer manage the task alone.
The steady rhythm of the heart monitor filled the medical bay, each electronic beep sounding impossibly loud inside the suffocating silence.
Rowe stood frozen beside the bed.
For a moment, she simply looked.
The woman lying beneath the white hospital blanket barely resembled the mother she remembered. Her skin had faded to an almost translucent pale beneath the harsh fluorescent lights. Dark circles shadowed her closed eyes. The oxygen tubing beneath her nose rose and fell with every fragile breath while IV lines disappeared beneath the blanket, silently feeding medication into veins that had already surrendered too much blood.
Five years.
Five years believing she’d been abandoned.
Five years believing she’d never have another chance to ask why.
Now the answers sat only inches away...
...if Elena could stay awake long enough to give them.
Her eyelids fluttered.
Slowly...
Painfully...
They opened.
The instant her gaze found Rowe, tears gathered in the corners of her eyes.
"Rowan..."
Her voice was barely more than air.
Rowe was beside her before the word had fully left her lips, dropping into the chair and taking her mother’s trembling hand between both of hers.
"I’m here."
She smiled through tears.
"I’m here, Mom."
Elena’s fingers tightened surprisingly hard around hers.
"I don’t have much time."
"You don’t have to rush."
"I do."
A weak smile touched Elena’s lips.
"There never was enough time for our family."
The humor disappeared almost immediately beneath another wave of pain.
Behind Rowe, Reaper stood motionless at the foot of the bed.
His broad shoulders blocked part of the doorway.
His face revealed nothing.
Only his clenched jaw betrayed the storm raging beneath the surface.
Elena drew a slow, shaking breath.
Then she began.
"I wasn’t kidnapped."
The words struck the room harder than a gunshot.
Rowe blinked.
"What?"
"I ran."
Elena closed her eyes briefly as though forcing herself through memories she’d spent years trying to bury.
"Eight months after your father died... Piper Kane found me."
Reaper didn’t move.
But Rowe felt him stiffen.
"She came with evidence. Documents. Financial records. Phone logs." Elena swallowed painfully. "Proof that someone inside the Iron Reapers had ordered your father’s murder."
Rowe’s heartbeat quickened.
"She told me the traitor hadn’t finished."
Elena looked directly into her daughter’s eyes.
"She said you and Cade would be next."
The room seemed to shrink.
"I wanted to fight."
Her voice cracked.
"I wanted revenge."
Another breath.
"But then she showed me surveillance photographs of you."
"Cade."
"The house."
"The school."
"Everywhere you went."
Elena squeezed Rowe’s hand harder.
"She convinced me the only way to save my children was to disappear."
Silence swallowed the room.
"So..."
Rowe struggled to force the words out.
"You left us..."
"...to protect us."
A tear escaped Elena’s eye.
"I thought if everyone believed I’d either abandoned my family or been taken by the Disciples..."
"...the people hunting us would stop looking."
Behind them, Reaper lowered his head.
For the first time since Rowe had known him...
He looked defeated.
"I trusted her."
Elena laughed bitterly.
"The irony is almost funny now."
Her tired eyes drifted toward Reaper.
"She was your cousin."
"Your blood."
"I believed blood meant loyalty."
She closed her eyes.
"It never occurred to me..."
"...that blood could be the knife."
Rowe felt her stomach twist.
"You never tried to come back?"
"I did."
"So many times."
"I wrote letters."
"They disappeared."
"I made phone calls."
"They never reached anyone."
"I begged."
"I screamed."
"I fought."
Nothing.
Every attempt vanished before it ever reached the people she loved.
"Piper always had another excuse."
Another safehouse.
Another fake identity.
Another warning.
"Not yet."
"It’s still too dangerous."
"They’re still watching."
"I believed every word."
Elena’s voice cracked.
"Because I wanted someone to still be protecting my children."
Reaper finally spoke.
His voice was quieter than Rowe had ever heard it.
"When did you realize she’d lied?"
Elena turned toward him.
"Six weeks ago."
The answer landed like a hammer.
"Cade found me."
Rowe’s breath caught.
"He called from a burner phone."
"He said he’d uncovered something."
"He believed he’d identified the person feeding information to the Disciples."
"He wouldn’t tell me who."
Elena smiled sadly.
"He wanted proof before he accused anyone."
The smile vanished.
"Three days later..."
"...he was dead."
Rowe closed her eyes.
The wound reopened all over again.
"They ruled it suicide."
"But then Piper called."
Elena’s voice became barely audible.
"She sounded... too prepared."
"Too sympathetic."
"Too perfect."
"I knew."
She looked at Reaper.
"I finally knew."
"You tried to run."
"No."
Elena slowly shook her head.
"I tried to warn you."
Her eyes found Rowe again.
"But Piper found me first."
"She moved me herself."
"Not to the Disciples."
"To one of her safehouses."
The realization spread through the room like poison.
"She kept me alive..."
"...only until she needed me."
Rowe whispered the horrifying conclusion before Elena could.
"The ridge."
Elena nodded.
"I was bait."
"For you."
"And for Jax."
"If the shooters had done their jobs..."
"...our family would’ve ended on that mountain."
The room fell silent.
Only the monitor continued speaking.
Beep.
Beep.
Beep.
Elena looked toward Reaper.
"There was one thing she never should’ve shown me."
His eyes narrowed.
"The ledger."
"The real one."
"Not the copy you found in the mine."
Rowe leaned forward.
"There’s another?"
Elena nodded weakly.
"She kept two sets."
"One for everyone else."
"...and one for herself."
"The real names."
"The real payments."
"Every traitor."
"Every deal."
"Every person she bought."
Reaper stepped closer.
"Where?"
Elena’s breathing became shallower.
"The old Kane property."
His face changed instantly.
"The homestead?"
She nodded.
"Only family would know where to look."
"The root cellar..."
She struggled to lift her hand.
"...behind the..."
Her words faded.
The sedatives finally caught up with her.
"...barn..."
"...beneath..."
Her eyelids slipped shut.
Her hand relaxed inside Rowe’s.
"Mom?"
Nothing.
Only the steady rhythm of the monitor answered.
Doc hurried forward immediately, checking her pupils before adjusting the medication.
"She’s sleeping."
He looked at both of them.
"And if you want her to wake up again..."
"...she stays asleep this time."
Neither Rowe nor Reaper spoke until they reached the hallway.
The amber emergency lights stretched long shadows across the concrete floor.
For several seconds...
Neither moved.
Finally...
Reaper exhaled.
"The Kane property."
His voice sounded distant.
"I haven’t been there since my father sold it."
Rowe looked at him.
"You think Piper bought it back."
"I think..."
He rubbed both hands across his exhausted face.
"...my own blood has been playing this club for fifteen years."
"And I never saw it."
Rowe stepped closer.
She placed both hands against his face.
Forced him to meet her eyes.
"This isn’t your failure."
He said nothing.
"She built this lie."
"She manipulated everyone."
"She used your love for your family against you."
"That’s on her."
Not you.
For a long moment...
He simply looked at her.
Then he covered her hands with his own.
Holding them there.
Drawing strength from them.
"We go tonight."
His voice had become steel again.
"Before she moves the ledger."
"Before she disappears."
"Before she finishes this."
"I’m coming."
A tired smile tugged at one corner of his mouth.
"I figured that out around the time you shot a Disciple through my chapel door."
A small laugh escaped Rowe despite everything.
It sounded almost foreign.
Ghost appeared at the far end of the corridor.
He was moving fast.
Too fast.
His face had lost every trace of color.
"Prez."
He held up his phone.
"You need to see this."
Reaper took it.
The screen displayed a freshly received photograph.
The old Kane homestead.
Moonlight spilled across the collapsed porch.
A black SUV sat in the overgrown driveway.
Standing beside it...
Arms folded...
Watching the camera as though she’d expected the picture to be taken...
Was a woman with Reaper’s sharp jawline.
His steel-gray eyes.
His family’s face.
Only her smile was different.
Cruel.
Patient.
Victorious.
Beneath the image...
One sentence.
Come home, cousin.
Bring the girl.
Let’s finally finish what your uncle started.
Reaper went completely still.
"My uncle..."
His voice was barely audible.
"...died before I was born."
Silence.
Heavy.
Unnatural.
Rowe stared at the glowing screen.
Then slowly looked up at him.
Ice settled deep inside her chest.
"Then..."
she whispered,
"...who is she really talking about?"
