Chapter 111: Hidden Depths
Lian had been practicing for some time now.
He stood in a cleared section of the underground cave, staring at his open palm with intense focus. The black liquid inside him — that strange, cold, living substance — refused to obey consistently. He had managed to form small blades and needles earlier, but now it lay dormant, flowing lazily through his veins like it had its own will. No matter how hard he concentrated, it wouldn’t respond the way he wanted. Frustration built in his chest, but he pushed it down. Anger wouldn’t help. Control would.
He decided to switch approaches.
He sat down cross-legged on the cool stone floor, closed his eyes, and began circulating his Qi. The familiar flow through his meridians grounded him. Then he extended his awareness using the faint perception technique he had started learning — the same kind he had sensed from Zephyr Kane and the Eternal Veil Syndicate representative during their fight. It wasn’t strong yet. It was hazy, like looking through thick fog, but it was growing.
He focused harder, pushing the perception outward.
He could hear further now — the distant drip of water deeper in the cave system, the faint shifting of loose stones, even Elara’s steady breathing a short distance away. He could “see” without his eyes — a blurry awareness of shapes, energy signatures, and movement within a limited range. The more he concentrated, the clearer it became, but it required intense mental effort. He wanted to be able to use it all the time, passively, without having to strain so hard.
He kept pushing, expanding the range slowly.
Then something caught his attention.
Deeper inside their cave system, beyond the main chamber they had been using, there was another hidden space. A smaller cave within the cave. Something was there — a strange, faint presence he couldn’t quite describe. It wasn’t a person. It wasn’t an animal. It felt... different. Ancient. Dormant. Almost alive in a way he couldn’t explain. His perception couldn’t penetrate it clearly, but it was enough to spark his curiosity.
He opened his eyes.
“There is another cave within this one,” he said quietly. “And there is something strange there.”
Elara, who had been meditating nearby, opened her eyes and turned to look at him. Her blue cyber eyes narrowed slightly with curiosity and caution.
“What do you mean? And how do you know that?”
Lian paused for a moment. He hadn’t told her about the full extent of his new perception ability yet — or about the black liquid inside him. Some things were better kept private until he could control them completely. He needed an excuse.
“When I was using the Nexus Scan Gauntlet earlier,” he said smoothly, “I picked up an anomaly deeper in the cave system. I didn’t have time to mention it then. The scan showed something unusual, but it was unclear.”
Elara looked at him for a long moment, studying his face. She knew he was hiding something — she could feel it in the way he spoke. But she didn’t push. Their trust had grown deep enough that she accepted his words for now. If it was dangerous, they would face it together.
She nodded.
“Alright. Let’s check it out.”
They both stood up and began packing the items they had scattered across the cave floor. Storage rings were filled again, weapons and resources secured, the Aetherforge Voidweave Suit and Elara’s white lightning blade stored safely. Lian took the lead, holding a glowing crystal orb he had found earlier — a simple but effective light source that cast a soft, steady white light ahead of them.
They moved deeper into the cave system, navigating narrow passages and natural tunnels. The air grew cooler and heavier. The bioluminescent moss became sparser, leaving more areas in darkness. Lian’s perception stayed extended, guiding them toward the hidden chamber he had sensed.
The path twisted and descended gradually. Small rocks crunched under their boots. Water dripped from the ceiling in steady rhythms. The glowing orb in Lian’s hand illuminated jagged rock walls and occasional glittering mineral veins. Elara followed close behind, her hand resting near her blade, ready for anything.
As they went deeper, the strange presence grew stronger in Lian’s awareness. It wasn’t hostile — at least not yet — but it felt old. Powerful. Like something that had been waiting in the dark for a very long time.
