Chapter 106: Unspoken Resolve
Lian walked a short distance away and sat down again, back against the cave wall. The faint blue-green glow of the bioluminescent moss cast long shadows across the cavern. He closed his eyes, trying to calm the storm of thoughts in his mind. The black liquid inside him was still there — cold, shifting, unpredictable. He had managed to form the blade once, but controlling it consistently was proving far more difficult than he had expected. He pushed the frustration down. He would master it. He had no choice.
Elara remained sitting on the ground where he had left her, staring at the spot where the heavy white lightning blade had slammed down. Her alloy fingers flexed slowly, still feeling the phantom weight and the electric shocks that had thrown her back repeatedly. Lian’s words echoed in her head — sharp, cold, and brutally honest. He had seen through her more clearly than she wanted to admit.
She stayed silent for a long time.
The cave was quiet except for the occasional drip of water and the soft hum of her internal systems recalibrating. She thought about her past, the reasons she trained so relentlessly, the fear she carried deep inside. Lian was right. She was scared. But hearing it spoken aloud made something shift inside her.
After nearly twenty minutes, Elara stood up slowly. She walked over to the white lightning blade and stared down at it. The weapon lay there, crackling faintly, as if daring her to try again. She didn’t reach for it immediately. Instead, she sat down cross-legged a short distance away and began meditating, focusing on her breathing and Qi circulation. She needed to be stronger — not just physically, but mentally.
Lian opened his eyes slightly and watched her without saying anything. He could sense her determination. He didn’t interfere. This was her battle.
Time passed slowly in the underground sanctuary. Elara meditated deeply, cycling her Qi and reflecting on Lian’s words. The fear was still there, but she refused to let it control her anymore. When she finally opened her eyes again, there was a new steadiness in her gaze.
She stood up and approached the blade once more. This time, she didn’t try to lift it right away. She placed her hand on the hilt gently, allowing the lightning to course through her. The shock was still painful, but she endured it, breathing through the pain. She tried to attune herself to the weapon’s energy, just as the records had suggested.
Lian watched silently from his spot. He could see the struggle in her posture — the way her shoulders tensed, the faint sparks dancing across her alloy arms. He didn’t offer advice. Some things had to be learned through pain.
Elara tried several more times, each attempt ending with her being pushed back, but she was lasting longer with each try. The blade was testing her. Rejecting her weakness. Demanding she prove herself worthy.
After another hour, she sat down again, exhausted but not defeated. She looked across at Lian.
He met her gaze calmly.
Neither of them spoke. The silence between them was comfortable now — a shared understanding that words weren’t always necessary. They were both fighting their own battles. Both pushing forward despite the weight of the world above them.
