Chapter 45: Chapter 44 - Sharing Burdens
"Uhm, should we have dinner now? But, why our dinner... Suddenly get revoked?" my mother asked after seeing the maid leave with dinner.
For anyone with normal brain and have a great understanding, this wasn’t a good time for dinner. Even if dinner did happen, the only thing that would accompany us would be the stench of this foul ointment.
Caress...
Caress...
"I will going to throw up dinner food when sniffing foul ointment, too, Mom," I replied coldly, and my mom smiled wryly when she heard that.
"D-Don’t be like that, Liliana! It’s not good to throw away the dinner food when the maids in the main kitchen have worked so hard to make!"
"Can you really eat dinner food in a room that smells... Disgusting like this?"
"Urk!! You have some point to that," said my mother, who sounded like she agreed with my words.
"The maid who just came in with dinner food... definitely thought twice about putting our dinner food, outside the room. The stench in our room is already that bad, Mother."
"Yes, yes, I understand, Liliana! Please don’t break your mother’s heart after buying the foul ointment..." my mother grumbled with cute expression.
"This isn’t the first time Mom has bought weird medicine. I still clearly remember myself in the past having to take bad medicine."
"U-Uhm, I-It happened in the past, right?"
"Huuumm?!! Can’t remember it well, Mom?" With a small murmur, I tried to suppress my mother’s memories of the past incident.
An incident in the past, where my head was hit by a tea glass and caused a minor injury to my head.
I mean... its not that past, just recently happen.
The incident that happened not long ago, for some reason, had been forgotten by my mother.
"Mother..."
"You’re not too stupid to remember something important, are you?" A small gasp escaped my lips after my mother pretended not to known what I said.
Her face, smiling stiffly and slightly pale, was reflected in the dressing mirror in front of her.
"S-Sorry..." Giving up on her pretense of not remembering anything, my mother said the word, while her face hanging low in shame.
"Uhm, you know... your mother busy saving money for our future and there is no time to enjoy my own luxuries."
"Liliana also feels stressed after working as an apprentice maid, right?"
"Once we have saved enough silver coins, we will immediately leave Duke Adelheid Von Blutfeld’s residence and try to make restaurant business in small village, which is quite popular among adventurers."
Her weak tone of voice...
Her head bowed weakly, like holding her burden alone...
Her mind, who is busy to think the our needs to survive in the future...
All the problems... Just for me, to make her only daughter she loved survived.
I understand my mother’s instinct to save me, I mean... Liliana for the future, but it only makes her feel more stressed by the responsibility that is too heavy to bear alone.
As a daughter who understands her mother’s feelings, I don’t want to give her an emotional burden and heavy responsibility like this.
I guess... its the time to make my mother release that burdens.
"No need to work so hard, Mother."
"Because... I already like my job as apprentice maid."
"Even though I still need to train harder as an apprentice maid."
The answer that came from the bottom of my heart just came out like an innocent child.
Suddenly, the room became silent...
My ears rang in the silence, and our eyes met in the reflection in the mirror before us. My mother’s doubts were evident on her face as she stared at me, smiling in the mirror.
"L-Liliana... Did you—" A soft call was heard; my facial expression melted with a light smile.
"I’m not forcing myself, Mom," I replied as if I understood what my mother wanted to say.
"B-But..."
"I’ve enjoyed my pride as an apprentice maid!" I said excitedly, clenching my fists, smelling the foul odor of ointment that clung to my palms.
"..." My mother was silent after seeing me so excited.
It could be said that I was trying too hard to take on the responsibilities that my mother was carrying.
The situation I am experiencing is not make poverty or trying to fix the main storyline in this novel world, but to survive the uncertain future of a mother and daughter who lost their hometown.
If I’m honest, I don’t care about Liliana’s fate at all.
It would be sounds cruel, but Liliana were fine without her life in this cruel world with full of misery. The reality of what is happening right now, still calm without storms. Perfect timing to die than survive.
"Since when did you become so mature, Liliana?" my mother asked after a moment of silence.
"Huhu~ I’m always mature, mother!" I replied with a small joke coming out of my mouth.
Ploomm...
The ointment bottle I hold, slipped and fall to the floor.
It reminded me for something I want to do.
I take the ointment bottle and tighten the bottle of ointment cap, then prepared to throw it away.
"Well, don’t think so hard like that, Mom..."
"After this, please don’t lie down on the bed and take a bath after the ointment dries!"
"I don’t want to share a bed with my mother stinky body!" I said with a small but firm threat.
I did say the threat in a firm tone, but my face showed a gentle smile to my mother.
"I-I know, Liliana. There’s no need to be that strict with your mother!"
"I don’t want to dry a smelly bed in the middle of the day either!" my mother grumbled, holding back her laughter after seeing me, so seriously scold her.
We both held back our laughter until one of us burst out laughing, spreading throughout the room.
The small mad room that became our temporary residence, suddenly felt so warm with the sound of laughter.
"E-Enough laughing, Mom!"
"That won’t make this room smell good after it’s filled with foul stench!"
I returned to my firm tone after laughing out loud.
"Open the window and make sure the foul stench in this room has disappeared before I come back, after throw away this bottle of foul ointment!" I continued in a firm tone.
"Y-Yes, Ma’am!!" my mother replied with another joke that made me chuckle.
I quickly stepped out of the room to throw away the stinky bottle of ointment. It was already half empty, almost enough for just one treatment session.
No production label...
No expiration date...
No creation date...
"This is really a cheap ointment in scam market..." I muttered in a small voice after leaving the room.
"Hmm?" After leaving the room, my gaze suddenly shifted to the figure of a maid standing not far from my bedroom door.
The figure of the maid...
I recognized her.
She, who had just brought dinner food into my room and took it out after smelling the foul odor that was spreading throughout the room, looking at me with take a few steps, away.
Her face suddenly turned pale after seeing the bottle of foul ointment in my hand.
"U-Ugghh..." An unbearable feeling of nausea was visible on her face.
"Ah, sorry," I quickly hid the bottle of foul ointment from her sight.
"I’m going to throw away this bottle of foul ointment. Sorry if the bad smell is getting out from my room," I continued as I walked away from her.
Tap...
Tap...
With quick steps, almost running through the maid’s room hallways, I headed to the back of the Mansion to dispose of the bottle of foul ointment. Its dark location, adjacent to the drain rain system, was perfect for disposing of this foul evidence.
My nose, which had become accustomed to the stench, now had to find a detour after seeing several maids on duty at night.
Unlike my mother, who had working hours from morning to evening, the maids who worked at night were mostly from the Knights of Duke Adelheid Von Blutfeld.
Me, who carrying this bottle of foul ointment would definitely look suspicious in their eyes.
Like it or not, I had to find another way and detour from their patrol route at night.
Hmm, wait a minute...
There’s something strange here...
Why do I feel like what I’m doing is a bit some criminal act?
