Chapter 43: Chapter 42 - My Mother Old Scars
As soon as I returned to the maid’s bedroom, I immediately lamented the fate that Duchess Adelheid Von Blutfeld had befallen me.
A sheet of paper containing the schedule for sword training, magic training, maid training, and basic education in the Kingdom of Belfast had become part of my duties as an apprentice maid.
Each of those modified schedules received an additional salary of one gold piece. This was quite substantial compared to the silver pieces that were the basic salary for maids. Using economy modern terminology, one hundred silver pieces was the minimum wage for a maid working in a duke’s residence, with the average monthly expenditure being 50-100 bronze pieces.
Too many?
Of course, those were the salaries of people working in the residences of wealthy nobles!
Even if my mother had quit her job within the first month, she could have started a new business using the hundred silver coins that were her base salary. However, after learning why my mother worked at the Duke’s residence, her goal now was definitely to survive and build a comfortable new home in the future.
With an unbalanced currency system, such as one gold piece being exchanged for one hundred silver pieces, and one silver piece being equal to one hundred bronze pieces, building a house in a peaceful countryside with one hundred silver pieces is no big deal; what matters is the risk of a monster invasion, like the one Liliana’s hometown experienced.
"This is really too much to me," I muttered softly as I loosened the buttons of my maid uniform, removing it until it fell to the floor and I laid my tired body on the bed.
Buugghh!!
The not-so-soft bed snugly supported my body, making me feel drowsy after falling to the Duchess’s cunning scheme to ensure her daughter attended training schedule with me.
There was nothing I could do, than to follow the Duchess’s scenario.
"Ugh, I just want to laze around for a day," I muttered softly as I pulled myself up from the bed, tidying up the maid uniform that was lying on the floor so it wouldn’t get wrinkled.
Krraaakk...
The bedroom door opened, revealing my mother, who had just finished her afternoon shift. Her face was exhausted, with a thin layer of sweat beading on her forehead. Compared to my hours as an apprentice maid, my mother worked at a high intensity every day.
"Welcome back, Mother..." I greeted her as I tidied up the maid uniform I had just thrown on the floor and lazed around on the bed for a few seconds.
"Oh, Liliana? Just got home?" my mother said as she took off her maid’s headband and threw it on the dressing table.
Swiirrrll...
Plllaappp...
I didn’t dare to throw my maid headband like that, even though I was still wearing a maid headband and can be throwing like that... because, I want to lazy for little bit.
My current condition was only wearing a little girl’s underwear. The undergarment I was wearing was unlike anything I’d ever seen in the modern world, overly fashionable with cute little laces and covering my body with the dignity of a maid. Unlike undergarments that prioritized comfort, this one prioritized honor and elegance.
"Yeah, just got home from the worst day ever," I replied as I took the maid headband off my head.
"Not as bad as what your mother experienced, right?"
"I don’t know, but mine it’s definitely worse! Because it’s too close to the source of the main problem!"
"Problems will always be there, Liliana. You just need to go through them with confidence."
"Ugh, can every problem be solved with confidence?"
"Yes, it could be... Like running away from problems with confidence, Hahaha!!"
My mother was really exhausted, and her little joke sounded gloomy with fake laugh. I just responded to the joke with a faint smile.
"It just ran away from trouble, Mother..."
"No, no, that’s running away from problems with confidence, Liliana!" My mother said as she took off her maid’s uniform, and the scent of her sweat filled the small room.
Not too bad, especially from a mother who works hard all day.
I paused for a moment and noticed a small scars on my mother’s back; it looked like a scars caused by a whip, or cut wound.
That little scars...
Somehow it makes my head hurt...
Suddenly, images from Liliana’s past swirled in my head, an event in the past about a mother who was trying hard to support her daughter in the midst of difficult economic conditions.
A father who doesn’t work and always drinks alcohol from the inn, gets drunk all day long. Liliana, which is still small and doesn’t know anything about the domestic violence perpetrated by her father. Flashes of the past swirled through my mind, leading my hand to touch my mother’s back, which was covered in small scars.
The hometown that is gone with tragedy...
A harmonious family with domestic violence due to the effects of intoxicating alcohol; no wonder my mother is willing to work all day and still happy in here.
This current condition is much better than before...
Working hard today and tomorrow, the daily routine of a maid is repeated over and over again. But its make her happy.
Caress...
Caress...
My hand caressed the small scars on my mother’s back, feeling the depth of the scars that had healed, but still left a mark on her back.
"Liliana?" my mother said in a gentle tone, making me continue to trace the small scars that covered her lower body.
When I feel it, the scars wasn’t from a whipping wound, but rather a gash caused by the monster’s sharp claws scraping the skin of her back. Longer and wider than a whipping wound from a drunken, reckless man.
"Does it still hurt, Mom?" I asked as I traced the large scar that almost covered her lower body.
Liliana’s hazy memories drifted back to a nightmare, where her mother desperately tried to escape the monster’s onslaught, sacrificing her back as a silent witness to the mindless monster’s ferocity.
"It felt better after being given the ointment by Doctor Julia."
"Is that ointment still there?" I asked further, moving my hand down to the area of her panties.
With this long scars, my mother was indeed strong in enduring the pain when get attacked and wounded, huh?
Or is it just the effect of adrenaline that grows with every pain and the hard will to survive?
"There’s still some," my mother replied, glancing at the dressing table.
My gaze immediately went to the dressing table and saw a suspicious glass bottle, without a production label.
"Sit properly, I’ll take care your scars."
"E-Eeehh??"
My mother looked confused by my sudden remark, but moving to sit on the dressing table chair with her face down to avoid the mirror reflecting her expression.
"This is embarrassing, Liliana."
"It’s not that embarrassing," I replied quickly.
I quickly picked up the suspicious glass bottle and removed the hard cap, an unpleasant oily scent wafting into my nose.
"Ugh!! What a cheap ointment, even though your salary as a maid can buy ointment that smells good. You choose to buy this garbage, mother?" I said, accidentally coming out after smelling the aroma of the oil.
"There is no opportunity to buy good ointment outside, Liliana."
"Of course there is, mother!! Oh, is this because I fainted earlier?" I asked in a tone that read into my mother’s mind.
Even though the Liliana she knew was gone and replaced by my consciousness, somehow I felt the gentle care of a mother who always fought for her little daughter.
It touched my little heart.
Fighting back the nausea from the disgusting smell of the oil, I smeared it on the scars on my mother’s back, covering the dried scars and hoping they would soon disappear.
Plllaasshh...
Plaasshh...
"Mom, it looks like... I’m going to be busy," I said while rubbing ointment on my mother’s back.
"Duchess Adelheid Von Blutfeld..."
"She suddenly forcing me to accompany Master Reina and Young Miss Amagi—"
"Uh, she’s not the Young Miss anymore. She’s my second Master now..."
"I’ll be busy taking care of them both as a full-time maid training. It’s a bit strange, isn’t it?"
Nod...
My mother just nodded her head, not daring to look at the mirror in front of her.
For the time being, I will pretend to be innocent Liliana.
