Chapter 79: First Mate. Minor Complications.
Unnoticed by either of them, the spectral hyena still stood in the room behind Kaelith.
As Mirabelle pierced his skin, cracks of golden light spread across its form.
They raced through the beast’s body like lightning beneath glass.
A heartbeat later, the entire figure broke apart into countless glowing fragments that drifted through the air like stars.
For the briefest moment, the room glittered with golden light.
Had Mirabelle not been completely consumed by the hyena before her, she might have noticed.
Instead, all of her attention remained fixed on the male under her fangs.
She tasted blood. But there was more than iron. It was as though sunbeams danced across her tongue.
Kaelith jerked beneath her iron grip.
She barely noticed.
Because before her stretched a vast savanna.
She could feel the sun on her skin.
Golden grass rolled endlessly beneath a brilliant blue sky.
Warm wind swept through the plains, carrying the scent of dry earth, sun-warmed grass, distant rain, and wild animals.
It tugged at her hair and brushed against the tips of her ears.
Tiny grains of dust danced through the sunlight, catching on her skin.
She could hear insects humming. Birds calling somewhere overhead.
The rustle of grass as unseen creatures moved through it.
Heat soaked into her skin.
The ground felt ancient.
Alive.
The vision lasted seconds.
Or years.
She couldn’t tell.
She was trapped inside it.
And within her, greed awakened. Along with absolute certainty.
All of this would belong to her.
The scent of dry grass vanished.
In its place came warm stone, smoke, and Kaelith.
His pained sounds had transformed into pleasure-filled groans.
Her fangs withdrew. The lynx female released his throat.
Before her eyes, the wound began to heal. At the same time, the skin around it darkened.
Black lines appeared. They curled and spread across his skin like ink in water.
Then a symbol emerged directly beneath the cultivation marks. Exactly where her fangs had pierced him.
The Beast inside her acknowledged it with quiet approval.
Her fingertips wandered over the dark markings stretched across his chest, following their path for a few seconds.
Then the longing became too much. Her body slowly lowered toward him.
And in that moment—
Mirabelle regained control.
She felt herself stretch. Felt her body welcome him as he slowly slid inside her.
The muscles in her legs tightened.
Her toes curled.
Her tail pressed against her back.
Her head fell backward, exposing her throat as her ears twitched uncontrollably and her arms dropped to her sides.
The golden robe slipped from her shoulders and settled across Kaelith’s legs.
A deep sound rumbled from the beastman.
One ear flicked at a distant sound before immediately turning back toward her.
His hands, which had been clenched in the bedsheets the entire time, finally moved to her hips. His fingers sank into her soft skin.
The grip grounded her.
At the same time, it sent her senses soaring to unfamiliar heights.
The air itself seemed charged.
A breeze drifted through the balcony doors and cooled the sweat gathering on her skin. The coolness of the night collided with the heat of their bodies, filling the room with tension.
Mirabelle settled onto his hips.
Her hands flew forward, coming to rest against his chest to steady herself. His abdominal muscles tightened in response and that sent a noticeable twitch through his erection.
The movement drew a sharp hiss from her.
Beneath her fingertips, his tattoos seemed to move with him, shifting across his skin to a melody only Kaelith could hear.
To him, it felt as though some otherworldly chime echoed through the air.
His ears twitched.
Yet all his remaining senses were focused on the point where they joined.
He hadn’t known it would feel this hot.
Mirabelle’s warmth surrounded him. Her inner walls pressed against his hardness, yet she felt unbelievably soft around him.
The tail of the lynx brushed across his leg and sent another wave of awareness through him.
Her scent surrounded him completely now.
Lynx.
Female.
Mate.
He had entered her without resistance, but the friction had activated thousands of nerve endings, overwhelming his brain with a flood of sensations.
Mirabelle tried to sort through the flood of sensations racing through her.
She allowed her body a brief moment of stillness.
A chance to adjust.
To relax.
She took a deep breath.
The scent of smoke and sun-warmed wood filled her.
The expansion of her lungs somehow made her feel even tighter.
’Oh Goddess, this feels good.’
The sensation balanced on the edge between discomfort and fulfillment.
And that was exactly what made her want to move. To edge a little closer to the abyss.
Maybe even throw herself from the cliff.
The first time she slid up his length and then dropped back down onto his hips, a roar tore from Kaelith’s throat.
Mirabelle immediately understood why.
The sensation ignited so many sparks inside her that for one terrifying moment she thought her vision might go dark.
As if her brain had simply short-circuited.
’Goddess, give me strength.’
But she didn’t give either of them the opportunity to adjust.
She steadied herself against his chest.
Beneath her palms, she could feel the powerful rhythm of his heartbeat.
Then her hips began to move in a slow, steady rhythm. The mattress shifted beneath them with every movement.
She increased her pace until the hyena finally lost control.
A beastman could only endure so much.
The moment Mirabelle collapsed forward against his chest, Kaelith’s arms wrapped around her waist.
Then he took over.
A startled yelp escaped the lynx female. The sound quickly dissolved into a deep, trembling moan.
With every powerful movement of his hips, he reached deeper. Each time, a jolt raced through her body and bright flashes danced behind her eyes.
Kaelith’s teeth grazed her neck. The sensation nearly drove her out of her mind.
There was already too much.
Too much heat.
Too much pressure.
Too many sensations crashing into one another.
Every second felt as though she stood on the edge of something vast, waiting for it to finally consume her.
Then he moved even faster.
Kaelith’s lips left her throat and a deep sound rumbled from his chest. The noise vibrated through his body and into hers.
Something about hearing him lose control sent another wave through her.
As though every sound he made fed the fire already burning inside her.
His low groans wrapped around her senses and drove her even closer to the edge.
The beastman’s grip on her tightened. His movements grew more urgent. Her name fell from his lips like a prayer.
Then she felt the heat of him inside her.
A groan tore from his throat as his body tensed beneath her. A heartbeat later, Kaelith pulled her over the edge with him.
Her entire body vibrated.
Her senses sang.
Something inside her shifted.
Like countless scattered pieces suddenly falling into place.
Like every part of her had been pulled in a different direction her entire life and had finally found where it belonged.
For the first time, everything felt aligned.
Above the skies of Luchsenstein, lightning split the heavens.
Then Mirabelle fell.
Darkness embraced her like a loving mother.
_____
The world stretched endlessly beneath.
Forests rolled across the land like great green oceans. Rivers carved silver paths through valleys and plains. Herds moved across the grasslands in slow migration, dark specks against the endless gold and green.
From above, Beastfolk looked impossibly small.
Tiny figures walked dusty roads. Children chased one another between cottages. Farmers worked fields beneath the sun.
Life unfolded in thousands of ordinary moments.
Then time accelerated.
The seasons began to turn.
Spring green became summer gold.
Summer faded into autumn fire.
Winter covered everything in white.
Again.
And again.
And again the land changed.
At first it was subtle.
A few additional houses appeared beside a village. A road widened.bA bridge crossed a river that had once separated communities.
Then change began to spread faster.
Fields expanded. The harvests grew richer. Terraces climbed hillsides. Water wheels turned beside streams. Storehouses rose where grain once spoiled.
Smoke curled from workshops where craftsmen shaped metal, leather, stone and wood. Travelers appeared in greater numbers. Merchant caravans crossed the territory.
Goods flowed between settlements.
Ideas traveled alongside them.
Villages became towns.
Towns became cities.
The roads multiplied until they resembled veins carrying life through the territory.
More Beastfolk arrived.
Families.
Artisans.
Traders.
Scholars.
People searching for opportunity. Searching for something better.
The cities grew upward.
Stone replaced timber. Walls expanded. Market squares overflowed with activity.
Libraries appeared. Schools followed.
Children who would once have spent their entire lives working the fields now gathered around teachers. Knowledge spread.
And with it came prosperity.
Healing halls opened their doors. Herbalists worked alongside healers. Fewer died. More lived.
The territory flourished.
The forests remained.
The rivers still flowed.
The grasslands still danced beneath the wind.
Yet everything felt different.
As though the land itself had awakened.
The years continued to race past.
The territory expanded beyond its borders.
Trade routes stretched outward like roots seeking fertile soil. Ships appeared on distant rivers. Markets drew visitors from lands far away. Foreign banners joined local ones. Languages mixed. Ideas collided.
And still the growth continued.
The territory pulsed with life.
With ambition.
With possibility.
From above it looked less like a nation and more like a living creature.
Breathing.
Growing.
Becoming.
And at its heart stood a city unlike any other.
Bright.
Vast.
Unyielding.
A beacon visible from every corner of the land.
As though everything around it had been drawn toward its gravity.
As though an invisible hand had shaped the future and gently guided countless lives toward a single destination.
_____
Ding!
Mirabelle woke in Kaelith’s arms.
But that wasn’t what had awakened her.
Keeping her eyes closed, she listened. Her mind dug through her memories, trying to identify what she had just heard.
A sound.
Not loud.
But completely out of place.
Like a phone notification.
