In the silent mountain forest, Li Yu and Yang Tianlong’s group were the first shift on watch, while Third Uncle and the others were resting inside the military base.
Li Yu stood atop the arched main gate of the military base, watching the surroundings.
Yang Tianlong couldn’t just stand around, so he used the base as the center and patrolled along the wire fence.
Two hours later.
Li Yu suddenly saw a flash of light in the direction of a small hillside.
He checked carefully through the telescope and finally realized it was a Zombie that had been exposed to nuclear radiation.
What a pain!
Li Yu cursed in his heart when he saw this Zombie.
How could there be so many irradiated Zombies in this desolate wilderness?
Taking care of this Zombie would be simple; he just needed to fire a gun and he could kill it.
But he wasn’t sure if there were other Zombies nearby; at night, Zombies all came out to move around.
Maybe the Zombies hadn’t come out during the day, but at night, in such silence, suddenly firing a gun could very likely attract Zombies from several kilometers away.
Li Yu cursed under his breath and then thumped his way down from the small Guard Post, ran to the helicopter, and grabbed a Compound Crossbow.
The effective range of the Compound Crossbow was between one hundred and three hundred meters; beyond three hundred meters, accuracy was very hard to control.
Seeing Li Yu’s movements, Yang Tianlong contacted him over the walkie-talkie: "Xiao Yu, what’s wrong?"
"I spotted an irradiated Zombie. I’ll take care of it. Come over to the wire fence and back me up," Li Yu replied.
With that, he unfastened the tied-up wire fence, then turned back and saw Yang Tianlong had already come over, so he stepped outside.
He didn’t want this irradiated Zombie getting close. These irradiated Zombies were disgusting; once they touched a human body, they could trigger organ cancer.
So if he could take care of this kind of Zombie from a distance, he would do it from a distance first.
Yang Tianlong, who had just arrived, switched on the lights inside the wire fence, illuminating the area around Li Yu and covering him in case any hidden Zombies suddenly appeared.
After Li Yu ran out, he moved into position outside and took aim at the Zombie about a hundred meters away.
Swish!
The arrow from the Compound Crossbow hit the Zombie’s skull with precision.
Thud!
The Zombie collapsed to the ground.
Li Yu was just about to pull back and leave when, at the instant he turned around, he caught sight out of the corner of his eye of two more glowing Zombies emerging from behind the small hillside.
Li Yu frowned when he saw them.
"There’s more?"
A very bad feeling suddenly rose in him.
Without hesitating, he ran straight back inside the wire fence, saying to Yang Tianlong as he moved, "The drone, where’s the drone?"
Yang Tianlong, who was in the middle of tying the wire fence back up with wire, answered, "It’s on the helicopter’s co-pilot seat. What’s going on?"
As soon as Li Yu heard that, he bolted toward the helicopter without another word.
In a few quick motions he grabbed the drone, set it down on a flat patch of ground, and launched it.
Because of the terrain, this military base was extremely well hidden.
From above the arched main gate, the farthest he could see was up to that small hillside.
Based on their defensive experience, being able to see a few hundred meters out was usually enough.
But the repeated appearance of irradiated Zombies gave Li Yu a growing sense that something was wrong.
As the drone lifted into the air, he watched the feed displayed inside the helicopter.
His face grew darker and darker.
In the vast stretch of abandoned farmland, scattered all over, countless irradiated Zombies began to appear.
"Get Third Uncle and the others up, something’s happening!" Li Yu shouted to Yang Tianlong.
Yang Tianlong had just finished fixing the wire fence when he heard Li Yu yelling. He didn’t hesitate and ran straight toward the cave.
However, before he could run inside, he saw Third Uncle and the others already coming out of the big cave with guns in hand.
"What’s going on?" Third Uncle’s hair was a bit messy, clearly just up from sleep.
They were the kind of people who would wake at the slightest noise.
The sounds Li Yu had just made were enough to wake Third Uncle.
Yang Tianlong looked at Third Uncle and said, "Xiao Yu just spotted an irradiated Zombie. He said something’s up and then launched the drone."
Third Uncle frowned deeply and quickly ran toward Li Yu.
By this time, after Li Yu had sent the drone up, he could clearly see behind the small hillside a dense mass of irradiated Zombies glowing like fireflies.
These Zombies all seemed to be heading in their direction.
As the drone slowly approached the Zombies, Li Yu was startled to discover that they were all coming from the same place.
Each glowing point was especially conspicuous in the night.
All these irradiated Zombies were emerging from a concrete culvert about 2,000 meters away, behind the abandoned fields, near the foot of the mountain on that side.
During the day, under sunlight, it had been impossible to tell where these Zombies were coming from.
But at night, with these Zombies emitting light, they were actually easier to spot.
The drone flew over and headed to the culvert.
The culvert had been built along the edge of the fields, but at a relatively low position; its highest point was almost level with the fields.
This meant that from their side during the day, they couldn’t tell there was a concrete pipe there.
The concrete pipe was a full two meters high; this kind of concrete pipe was one of the larger specs and was usually used mainly for underground drainage.
On the drone’s screen, the inside of the concrete pipe was packed tight with glowing Zombies.
