Chapter 130: Touring the fortress
Edward stared at her, thoroughly bewildered. He had worked with eccentric billionaires before, but spending tens of millions of dollars on a state-of-the-art holographic dome just to manually run the software herself seemed entirely peculiar. What was the point of being this wealthy if you didn’t hire people to do the heavy lifting?
Still, looking into her calm, unyielding dark eyes, he knew there was no room for negotiation.
He let out a dry, defeated chuckle. "Well... you’re the boss. It’s an incredibly complex business, but once the hardware installation is complete, I’ll personally sit down and teach you how to run the control deck. Just be prepared for a steep learning curve."
"I am a fast learner," April murmured. "Now, let’s look at the financial estimate for these additions."
Edward tapped his screen, pulling up the current material, corporate labor fees, high-voltage fencing equipment, and the restricted holographic arrays. He turned the tablet toward her, showing the bottom line.
The total figure wound down to a whopping 33 billion dollars.
Samuel, standing just behind her, let out a silent, sharp breath, his fingers tightening against his briefcase. 33 billion. It was a staggering, astronomical sum of capital—an amount April currently did not have in her bank accounts.
Yet, April didn’t panic. Her face remained completely placid, her heart rate not even shifting by a single beat.
Her inner state was completely calm because she already had a flawless strategy. Once Nat opened the black-market trading network for her next week, a single vial of her miracle revitalization water would easily fetch one to two billion dollars from dying tycoons and desperate lineage heads.
Selling a mere twenty to thirty vials would completely cover this entire bill, leaving her with an immense surplus. And not to mention the fortune telling side gig she would carry out on the side.
"For now, do not begin physical construction on the dome or the fence," April commanded calmly. "Focus entirely on drawing out the exact blueprints and structural plans. Once the layouts are finalized, I will secure the necessary capital, and you can begin building immediately."
Edward nodded, visibly relieved by the practical approach. "That’s actually a very good idea. Rushing into the hardware without exact blueprints would be a disaster. My team can have the comprehensive structural plans completely drawn out in exactly one week."
"One week. Excellent," April agreed. Next week, the plans would be ready, and her black market network would already be live. The timing was aligning perfectly.
With the primary infrastructure meeting settled, April turned to tour the fortress itself. The above-ground villa structure was already fully framed and beautifully built.
As she walked through the echoing corridors with Samuel at her side and Rufus trotting behind, she counted over seven massive rooms.
Every single one of them was structured like a grand luxury suite, complete with high ceilings and private bath areas.
The layout also included two massive, distinct living spaces—one large living room downstairs for reception, and another private family living room upstairs.
Her own master suite was exceptionally large, taking up a prime corner of the upper floor with wide windows looking out toward the mountain ridge. Just the way she liked it.
The structural bone work was perfect, but the initial staging furniture—the generic luxury chairs, sofas, and beds the contractors had brought in—did not meet her standards.
"Samuel," April called out, stopping in the middle of the grand upstairs living room. "I will be replacing all of the initial chairs, the beds, and the decorations in these suites with my own items."
She was thinking of the massive, massaging bed dubbed California Kings. Yes, those were just the kind of beds she wanted in her home.
Samuel nodded smoothly, logging it down. "That is a wonderful idea, Miss April. Personalizing the interior environment will make the stronghold feel much more secure and comfortable. But... what should we do with the initial furniture currently inside? Would you like me to have the logistics team haul them away and dispose of them?"
"No," April said, her hoarding instincts instantly twitching. Waste an entire house full of perfectly good, high-end furniture? Absolutely not. "Leave them exactly where they are for the time being. I will store them away in my own space once the construction is completely finished."
"Understood. We will leave the staging furniture untouched," Samuel replied.
By the time they finally wrapped up the tour, checking every secure layer of the planning—taking a look at the sprawling bathrooms with huge tubs—and reviewing the structural dimensions of the concrete walls, a full three hours had passed.
April’s feet felt a little heavy inside her loafers, but her mind was deeply satisfied. She had already mapped out the entire floor plan. She even picked out the exact room right next to her master suite that would be dedicated entirely to Rufus and the white kitten.
As they walked back out to the courtyard to return to the car, April adjusted her grip on the wicker basket, looking down through the woven slats. The white kitten was still sound asleep, curled into a peaceful snowy ball.
Come to think of it, April thought, a sudden realization hitting her. I haven’t given this kitten a name yet.
She stared at the white furball, her mind trying to process what kind of name would fit an arrogant, bad-luck-eating mythical cat. Rufus had been easy because it didn’t come from her, because when it came to names, her own creative mind was on low battery.
She couldn’t think of a single decent option.
"Samuel," April said as they reached the car door. "What name fits this cat?"
Samuel paused, looking down at the basket, then back to April’s characteristically blank face. He thought for a moment, a polite, soft smile touching his lips. "How about... Lily, Miss April? It matches her snowy white coat perfectly."
April blinked, testing the sound of it in her mind. "Lily. Simple and Clean. And although she is not as gentle as a Lily, we will go with Lily."
Behind his professional mask, a sudden, distinct wave of quiet pride swelled inside Samuel’s chest. He adjusted his glasses, feeling incredibly accomplished.
Last time, Nat had been the one to carelessly throw out the name ’Rufus’ for the dog, and April had taken it.
But this time, he was the one who had officially named her possession. This makes him even with the barbarian, he thought. He had successfully out-logged Nat in the household naming registry.
"I am glad you approve, Ma’am," Samuel said, his tone carrying a touch more warmth than usual despite the thoughts in his head. Then, he opened the back seat door for her.
April slid onto the leather seat, carefully resting the basket on her lap as Rufus hopped in beside her.
As the vehicle started its engine and began rolling away from the massive hillside fortress, April looked back out the window toward the empty yard. They had inspected the flat roof as well and she saw a helipad where helicopters landed.
A helicopter... She thought... would she get one?
But she didn’t know how to fly one. Well, she didn’t know how to drive either but she was taking lessons now, so... There’s a first time for everything.
For now, she pulled her phone out of her purse, slid her thumb across the screen, and quietly went back to tapping her colorful blocks on Winecraft.
