Chapter 124: Back to the Greels Estate
Alexander stared at her calm face for a second, then shook his head with a wide, amused grin. "Right. Forget I said anything, Miss Seer. Keep your eyes on the track—you’re approaching the final hairpin turn."
April didn’t reply, but her foot smoothly transitioned to the brake pedal, slowing the massive matte-black beast down to a perfect, controlled speed as she guided it through the sharp curve.
By the time she brought the Jeep to a stop back inside the shade of the exhibition bay, the engine idling with a deep, content purr, April felt a profound sense of satisfaction. The skill was unlocked. She wasn’t an expert yet, but the foundation was laid.
She clicked the shifter back into Park and turned off the ignition, the sudden silence in the hangar loud after the engine’s roar.
She let go of the wheel, her fingers tingling slightly from the vibration and she let out a heavy sigh. She finally did it. Driving was not for the weak at all.
"Excellent progress for a first run," Alexander said, unbuckling his seatbelt and throwing his door open. "We’ll do this every couple of days until you can handle it blindfolded. Now, come on. My grandfather had his own gift prepared at the main estate. Let’s go pick it up."
"Another?" April asked, her brow twitching by a fraction as she paused with her hand still resting on the ignition. "If there was another gift waiting at the estate, why didn’t you simply give that to me when I first arrived?"
Alexander rolled his eyes away, shifting his weight uncomfortably from one foot to the other as he rubbed the back of his neck.
His arrogant defense mechanism threatened to flare up for a second, but he quickly forced it down.
"Because..." he muttered, his voice dropping into a defensive mumble as he looked anywhere but at her narrowed face. "I wanted to give you this one first, okay? The Jeep was my idea. My grandfather was the one who insisted on the other thing. I wanted to see you react to this beast before we dealt with the old man’s project."
April stared at him for a long, quiet three seconds, completely analyzing his expression.
Ah. Male pride, she concluded dryly. He wanted the credit for providing the heavy-duty armor transport before his grandfather upstaged him with whatever gift he had prepared.
"Alright, I understand," April stated, sliding her handbag back over her shoulder as she climbed down from the high leather seat. "Your choice of transport possesses excellent defensive structural value, Alexander. I’ll just take it that the priority was well-placed."
Alexander’s head snapped back toward her, his chest instantly puffing out as a look of intense satisfaction flooded his face. "See? I told you it was a perfect fit. Now come on, let’s head back before the old man starts pacing the lawn again."
They climbed back into the waiting security car, the driver immediately shifting into gear and steering them out of the showroom bay.
April’s Jeep would be transported to Xavier’s Estate by another personnel.
The ten-minute ride back to the sprawling Greels estate was much quieter.
April pulled her smartphone from her pocket, her thumbs instantly launching Winecraft to check on her stone wall construction. Beside her, Alexander leaned back against the headrest, completely checked out as he watched the colorful digital blocks flash across her screen, his mind accessing the gameplay so he wouldn’t lag behind when he finally began to play it.
When the car finally rumbled up the grand, gravel driveway of the main estate, April clicked her phone screen off.
Standing right on the edge of the pristine front lawn was Robert Greels. The elderly patriarch looked frail but remarkably sharp, his classic tailored suit immaculate as he stood beside a small, intricately woven wicker basket resting on a stone garden table.
April stepped out of the car, her loafers crunching against the gravel. Her eyes immediately locked onto the basket, trying to calculate what kind of resource could possibly fit inside such a small and delicate container.
"Miss April," Robert Greels greeted, his voice carrying a deep, reverent warmth as he stepped forward. "I trust my grandson didn’t cause any severe delays with his flashy presentation?"
"The lesson was very informative, Mr. Greels," April replied, her tone a bit softer than how she had talked with Alexander. She walked straight toward the stone table. "Alexander stated you had prepared a separate gratitude offering? You really didn’t need to."
"But I wanted to," the old man smiled, his eyes wrinkling as he reached down to gently lift the lid of the wicker basket. "It is nothing grand or flashy like a reinforced vehicle, but it is a token from our family to aid in your long-term security."
April leaned over the edge, curious as to what something so small that could fit in a cage would be able to contribute to her long term security.
Then, a tiny, soft white face with two oversized, glowing green eyes blinked up at her from the basket. The creature let out a tiny, high-pitched "Meow," its tiny pink nose twitching as it sniffed the air toward her.
April froze entirely. Ah... It was a kitten.
April stared down into the velvet-lined wicker basket, her mind going entirely blank.
The white kitten was about the size of her two palms pressed together, with fur as white as fresh snow and two big, bright green eyes that blinked up at her.
The moment it saw her, it let out a soft, tiny mouth-open hiss, its pink nose twitching as it looked up at her with a surprisingly fierce, independent expression.
Before she could even question it, a sudden, familiar transparent blue box opened directly in front of her eyes.
