Chapter 106: What signs?
In the cutthroat underbelly of the city, placing your full trust in a human being was a quick way to get a knife between your ribs.
He just... didn’t know what it means to trust someone fully and couldn’t bring himself to let his guard down. The best way to avoid getting hurt by a betrayal is not caring for the person at all.
Nat had also conditioned his psychotic mind to never fully believe anything until the proof was bleeding in front of him. That was why he needed to see this miracle water for himself.
I understand him perfectly, April thought, her deadpan expression locking back into place. Even I wouldn’t believe a vial of water could rewrite a fatal injury.
"Then let’s set the stage," April said, taking a deliberate step forward into his personal space, her eyes looking straight up into his shades. "When the time comes... when you have a dying man on your hands, just let me know and I will prove it to you. But you have to promise me something in return, Mr. Collins."
"Oh? What’s that?"
"After you set the stage, you have to give me your absolute underground support and your protection while I run this show."
Nat stared at April for a second and then burst into a low, rumbling chuckle, his face leaning down until his lips were inches from her ear. "Of course, sweetheart. Just knowing a resource like that is floating around is enough to make the entire city go absolutely feral. I’ll protect you with my life... but be fully prepared to pay for my services."
He straightened up, sliding his thick hands into the pockets of his trousers. "Nat Collins doesn’t work for free, you know. Anything in my portfolio that doesn’t yield a massive payout is just asking to be dumped in the garbage."
April knew she would have to compensate him. But to her, the solution was simple: she would just feed him more readings to multiply his subterranean empire. "I will provide you with free future readings from now on to line your pockets."
Nat immediately clicked his tongue, rolling his eyes behind his lenses as if he had predicted her exact words. "You’re always going on about those readings, little seer. Sure, I appreciate the profit, but you need to think outside the box sometimes, sweetheart. Even I know how to read the signs sometimes."
She was confused. What signs? And what was more important than her reading that would double his financial assets? Was there something she wasn’t getting?
Nat stopped at the edge of the terrace, turning his head to glance back at her. The playful mockery vanished from his face, replaced by a sudden, heavy solemnity.
"The world is ending in seven weeks, April." He said calmly. "Money isn’t gonna mean shit when the fire starts, even I know that. I think I’m gonna find myself spending far more capital than I’ll need to earn over the next forty-nine days." He paused, his jaw tightening slightly. "I’ve got a lot of boys down in the ports to feed, you know. An entire family of big mouths."
Even if the Golden Dragon lacked loved ones or didn’t care about the things like trust, and relationships, he was a true leader who would never abandon the men who bled for his flag.
The only currency that could ever buy an individual out of his iron-clad protection was stupidity and betrayal.
April stared at his broad back for a brief second before gesturing down to the moon-furred canine. "Let’s go, Rufus."
The divine beast let out a sharp, eager huff, falling perfectly into step beside her sneakers as they followed the red-haired warlord out into the sunlit courtyard.
When April walked out into the main courtyard, she saw Samuel already standing by the running sedan. The moment his sharp eyes registered Nat Collins strolling right in front of her, his pristine professional composure experienced a severe logistical tremor.
Why is this lawless barbarian still here? Samuel thought, his jaw tightening as he maintained his perfect posture.
"Miss April," Samuel greeted smoothly, opening the rear door. I have informed the staff in the transit house to all exit the building while you execute your extraction flawlessly. We are scheduled to arrive at the warehouse in twenty minutes."
"Adjust the schedule, Samuel," April stated flatly, pausing on the cobblestones. "We need to go to a private veterinary clinic first. Before anything else."
Samuel’s gaze flicked down to the magnificent, unyielding animal standing squarely beside her sneakers. "A veterinary clinic? Is the animal experiencing a physical disability?"
"No. He just needs a health evaluation." She said, looking down at the divine beast. "Rufus is getting his first check up."
"Rufus?" Samuel asked, his left eyebrow subtly twitching behind his polished lenses as he looked down at the dog.
"Yes. Rufus," April confirmed.
Nat let out a rough, delighted chuckle from behind her, crossing his arms over his chest as he took in the assistant’s thinly veiled irritation. "Yeah, Rufus. It’s got a nice, heavy ring to it, don’t you think? Now, stop staring and go pull that armor-plated G-Wagon out of the lower garage. We aren’t cramming a beast into a tiny sedan."
Samuel’s eyes cooled instantly. He didn’t even look in Nat’s direction, keeping his focus strictly pinned on April. "I apologize, Mr. Collins, but I only take direct orders from Miss April."
Nat immediately felt a muscle bulge in his jaw. He felt it before but this assistant is quite cocky when talking to him. Should he teach him some manners?
April glanced between the luxury sedan and the massive, towering frame of the underground lord.
Nat was complaining about cramping the beast but in truth, it was his wide, heavily built body that was in danger of being folded.
If he sat in the back seat of the sedan, he’d be cramped, and there was no way he would willingly sit quietly in the passenger’s seat if his legs couldn’t stretch.
The previous night was an exception, which she did not know of since she was passed out. But Nat had a rough time in that passenger seat.
April’s eyes drifted toward the dark, heavily armored G-Wagon glittering inside the lower garage. Is it time to get my own transport vehicles yet? she thought, making a mental note to check her available capital later. Shifting the thought aside, she looked back at her assistant.
"Samuel... will Mr. Reed permit us to use his G-Wagon for this excursion?"
Samuel’s expression instantly softened into a polite, reverent smile. "If the request is coming from you, Miss April, Mr. Reed will definitely authorize it without hesitation."
Though his voice was smooth as silk, his inner monologue was violently tearing a silk handkerchief to shreds, screaming in agony over why she was going out of her way to accommodate the comfort of a literal mad dog.
"Then let’s use that instead," April decided with a definitive nod.
"Right away, Miss April," Samuel replied, bowing before turning to swap the keys.
