Chapter 326: Chapter 346: Be Prepared

"That’s right. What’s the point of overthinking it? Just focus on surviving."

"Even we could die any day if we’re not careful."

Basil Xavier let out another loud laugh. There was no point in worrying about some things. At least they were already doing their best to help people within their capabilities.

Beyond that, there was nothing they could do.

But he knew one thing for sure: he had to keep getting stronger, to keep improving.

That was the only way their chances of survival would grow. The stronger he became, the more people he could help.

With that thought, he no longer felt down.

’Happy or sad, the days pass all the same. Might as well face everything with a positive attitude.’

And so, his gaze fell on the boxes behind Gordon Ford.

Stella Sterling had just had someone load them up. They were a return gift for Gordon Ford.

Ever since they got in the car, Gordon Ford would occasionally glance at the items and crack a smile.

Although he couldn’t see what was inside, Basil Xavier already had a guess based on what Stella Sterling had said.

His eyes lit up, and he looked at Gordon Ford with a mischievous grin. "So, Gordon, my man. What did your crush, your goddess, give you? Let me see, huh?"

As he spoke, he sighed internally. ’Stella Sterling is so biased. We’re all friends, so how come she only gives stuff to Gordon and not me?’

’It’s so unfair. I’m definitely going to complain to her next time I see her.’

"These were given to me."

Gordon Ford glanced at him, deliberately emphasizing the point.

Basil Xavier’s mouth twitched, but then he smiled. "They’re yours, I know. I’m not trying to fight you for them. I just want to open one and take a look. Come on, let me just have a peek. She said it was rare food. I wanna see just how rare it is. Maybe we have some of it too, you know?"

As he spoke, he quickly snatched a box.

Gordon Ford shook his head and focused on driving, not bothering to argue with him and just letting him be.

Basil Xavier cheerfully opened the box and found it was full of things like instant noodles, self-heating hot pots, and self-heating rice meals.

There were about 20 cups in the box, all different flavors.

Basil Xavier’s eyes were already shining. Even though he’d already guessed, his heart still leaped with joy upon seeing the items.

Not just self-heating hot pots, but other things too. This really was a huge surprise.

He hadn’t opened the other boxes, but he figured they were probably similar to this one.

One other box was already torn open, and he could see some canned fruit inside.

He swallowed hard. Everything looked like it had been perfectly preserved.

It was as if they were exactly as they had been when they came off the production line, completely untouched by the pollution of this apocalyptic world.

This stuff was all treasure.

He looked over at Gordon Ford, his eyes crinkling with a smile. "My brother, we’re comrades who have been through life and death together, right?"

"We’ve faced so much danger together. You’re the closest brother I have—closer than my own parents!"

Basil Xavier went on and on, recounting all the things he and Gordon Ford had been through together over the years.

But as he kept talking, his voice gradually trailed off...

It wasn’t that these memories with Gordon Ford weren’t worth recalling. On the contrary, they had been through a lot together over the years.

Several times, the two of them had nearly died, but in the end, they always pulled through together.

These were memories he would never forget for the rest of his life.

But he slowly realized that in all the thrilling tales he was telling, Gordon Ford had saved his life most of the time.

Without even realizing it, Gordon had saved him so many times.

There were also many times when Gordon had saved him at the risk of getting injured himself.

Thinking of this, Basil Xavier gave Gordon Ford a complicated look, his eyes filled with both gratitude and exasperation.

ARGH—

’Gordon’s such a good guy. I should be the one repaying him. How can I bring myself to ask him for some of his stuff now?’

So Basil Xavier kept scratching his head, nearly turning his hair into a bird’s nest.

He thought for a long time before finally being forced to admit that because his own abilities were so much weaker than Gordon Ford’s, it was always Gordon saving him. At most, all he could do was take care of Gordon afterward.

Finally, he sighed and looked over at Gordon Ford.

Only to find Gordon looking at him with slight bewilderment, as if he were staring at a complete idiot.

Seeing that Basil Xavier had stopped, Gordon Ford spoke up. "Are you done with your little psycho episode?"

"Hahaha—"

Basil Xavier let out a few awkward laughs. Suddenly, something was tossed toward him.

He reached out to catch it instinctively. Because the person throwing it was Gordon Ford, he didn’t even bother to look at what it was.

He looked down, and in the next moment, he saw what was in his hand: a can of yellow peaches!

He looked toward Gordon Ford, who said coolly, "You can give it back if you don’t want it."

’This is stuff she gave me. I cherish it more than anything.’

’If it weren’t for our many years of friendship making me feel bad, I really wouldn’t have bothered.’

"I want it, I want it! Who said I didn’t want it?"

Basil Xavier nodded repeatedly, immediately opened the can, and started eating.

He had been feeling a little sheepish before, not knowing how to ask Gordon Ford, but all that awkwardness had vanished now.

’Anyway, I already owe Gordon so much. What’s a little more debt?’

’We’re brothers, right? No need to be so formal.’

’If Gordon ever needed it, he could have my life...’

After seeing the two men off, Stella Sterling returned to the base. Without pausing for a moment, she went back to her own little villa.

With a thought, she took out a few popsicles from her dimensional space to eat.

With the air conditioner blasting, she snuggled onto the sofa and ate her popsicles. Only then did the restlessness in her heart begin to subside, and she couldn’t help but let out a comfortable sigh.

’Now this is the life!’

She squinted her eyes. ’Thank goodness I remembered to stock up on these popsicles. Otherwise, where would I get to eat something like this now?’

In this scorching summer heat, a single bite of something so icy cold felt like her soul was ascending.

Thinking of this, she began to plan her trip to Sanctyr Base.

’Going out in this heat could be deadly. I have to be fully prepared. Otherwise, I’m not leaving the house.’

’I should probably get a portable fridge for the car. That way, I can eat cold things whenever I want without arousing suspicion from my companions.’

’Of course, even if some of them get suspicious, it’s not a big deal. The loyal ones can stay. As for those I can’t trust... I’ll just take care of them.’

All in all, unless there was absolutely no other choice, she would never, ever let herself suffer again.
