Chapter 287: Chapter 287: Can You Give Me a Chance?
"Nothing’s changed!"
Stella Sterling looked up.
In response, Gordon Ford chuckled softly. "That’s good, too!"
’Her not knowing how to answer means she’s still hesitant. At least I’m not completely insignificant to her. Otherwise, if she didn’t like me at all, she wouldn’t have to be this conflicted. As for me, I’ve already told her my feelings and determination, and I’m not going to give up. It’s enough just to let her know.’
With this thought, Gordon Ford’s mood brightened considerably.
Looking at the woman beside him, her once long hair was now a neat short cut, lying softly but somewhat messily on her head.
He really wanted to reach out and run his hand through it, but just as he raised his hand, he put it back down.
The two of them just sat there peacefully, not speaking for a long time.
Then they both realized that it had been a very, very long time since they had sat together so quietly.
Gordon Ford, in particular, felt lost in a daze.
Stella Sterling, however, just smiled and turned to look at Gordon Ford. "You know, I never got a chance to really ask when we met last time... how have you been these past few years?"
"Not bad. I started my own base, and it’s developing pretty well. Aside from being busy, everything else is normal."
At this point, Gordon Ford glanced at Stella Sterling again. "I’m still no match for you."
Gordon Ford showed no trace of embarrassment as he said this.
The Stella Sterling of today was simply more outstanding than him.
’To think I once wanted to keep her by my side to protect her. All these years later, it’s clear I underestimated her. She’s an eagle in her own right. She doesn’t need my protection. I’ve just always been so curious... how did she improve so much in such a short time?’
These questions had crossed Gordon Ford’s mind before, but he had always suppressed them.
He had always loved her for who she was. No matter what she became, he loved her.
Therefore, why she had changed so drastically wasn’t very important to him.
In fact, he was very happy. The stronger Stella Sterling became, the happier he was for her. In this apocalypse, only those with ability could go far.
In response to Gordon Ford’s words, Stella Sterling was not modest at all. She nodded very seriously. "That’s true."
’It’s true that the only reason I’m like this now is because I was reborn and have my spatial ability to help me. But whatever the reason, this power is mine now. I *am* outstanding. I’ve always thought so.’
Even in front of Gordon Ford, she didn’t bother with false modesty. She wasn’t worried that being so direct would hurt his pride.
Based on her understanding of Gordon Ford, he didn’t need that.
He had never been the type to be unable to accept others being more outstanding than him. When faced with someone better, he would always praise them generously. He wouldn’t get upset; he would just work harder to catch up.
The Gordon Ford she knew had always been like this.
Her guess was correct. After hearing Stella Sterling’s words, Gordon Ford did not feel he had lost face.
He beamed at her, his usually gentle expression now holding a hint of playful probing. "Miss Sterling, you are so outstanding. Might I have the chance to pursue you?"
As he said this, Gordon Ford’s entire body tensed up. He carefully watched Stella Sterling’s every move, on guard for any unusual action.
The last time, after he had said this very thing, she had taken him by surprise and used a drug to knock him out.
This time, he really didn’t want her to pull the same stunt on him again after his confession.
They had only just managed to see each other; he didn’t want to be separated so quickly.
’Even if she hasn’t said yes, just being able to look at her like this for a little longer is enough.’
To avoid waking up again and not knowing where he was, Gordon Ford remained vigilant as he spoke.
Before Stella Sterling could even reply, she saw Gordon Ford’s utterly vigilant posture.
At first, she was completely confused.
But after thinking for a moment, she understood and burst out laughing.
’Wow, it was truly rare to see Gordon Ford in such a state.’
Ever since she’d known him, he had always been gentle, with a confident, in-control look about him in all matters.
Seeing his cautious, guarded look, and then the serious way he was watching her, he looked both pitiful and a little funny.
She covered her mouth and coughed lightly twice, then looked at him with a smile. "Relax. I won’t knock you out this time."
’The main reason last time was that he was just too direct. I didn’t know what to say, so I just acted on instinct. That knockout drug is precious, you know. I didn’t get much of it on the black market, and every dose I use is one I can’t get back. It would be such a waste to keep using it on Gordon Ford.’
Hearing this, Gordon Ford seemed to let out a huge sigh of relief. He smiled. "So, should I be honored? Does this mean I have a better chance than before?"
"No."
After hearing this, Stella Sterling simply shook her head at him.
Before Gordon Ford could speak again, she added, "I won’t drug you, but if I get annoyed, who’s to say I won’t find some other way to knock you unconscious?"
"I can be pretty ruthless, so you’d be better off staying away from me."
Hearing Stella Sterling say this, Gordon Ford dropped his playful demeanor.
His expression was calm, unchanged by her words. "I’m not afraid. As long as you don’t kill me, I’ll find a way to your side."
"So, I’ll ask again. Miss Sterling, will you give me a chance to pursue you?"
Gordon Ford looked at Stella Sterling seriously, even more seriously than before, and he felt a surge of nervousness.
Stella Sterling’s tone was somewhat nonchalant. "If I don’t give you a chance, what will you do then? Are you planning to give up?"
"I won’t."
This time, Gordon Ford’s answer was swift and direct.
He looked straight at her. "During that half-year I was abroad, the doctors issued multiple critical condition notices, but I pulled through. Do you know what I was thinking back then?"
"I still haven’t made you my girlfriend. How could I possibly die?"
"Now I’ve survived. It was so hard just to be able to stand before you alive, so how could I possibly give up?"
Hearing his words, Stella Sterling’s heart trembled. She said nothing.
Gordon Ford continued, "If you don’t give me a chance, I’ll just have to chase you anyway. Even if that’s shameless, and even if you might come to hate me for it, I still don’t want to give up."
"If you don’t give me a chance, I’ll work to make you give me one. Once I have that chance, I’ll work to win your heart. Once I’ve won your heart, I’ll work to make you my wife. And once you’re my wife, I’ll work to treat you well, so you’ll spend the rest of your life with me!"
