Chapter 79: Chapter 79: Provoking Public Anger

"The one-minute countdown continues," Jason Lynch said, releasing his grip and smiling coldly.

The man’s body fell limply to the ground with a thud. His chest was still. He was clearly dead...

In just a few short seconds, he had ended a man’s life. He was making an example of him, putting on a show for the residents and Lily Hart to see who was really in charge of this base.

Hidden in the darkness, Lily Hart couldn’t help but curse, "That bastard Jason Lynch is a real animal! He doesn’t even see people as human!"

’I really want to slap him, kick him a few dozen times, and let him have a taste of being at someone else’s mercy.’

Fortunately, there were brave people among the residents—plenty who couldn’t stand Jason Lynch’s dictatorial rule.

All the accumulated hatred, fueled by his inhumane management style, finally erupted at this moment.

"Brothers, he’s only a Sixth-rank Superpower User! There are so many of us, you think we can’t take him?!" someone shouted.

That one sentence instantly ignited the spark in everyone’s hearts. Their fear was already mixed with anger; all they needed was for someone to take the lead.

"That’s right!" someone shouted in agreement.

"Brothers, charge with me!" another person yelled, raising their arm.

Dozens of people broke through the Guardian Corps’ defensive line and charged toward Jason Lynch in unison, unleashing a colorful barrage of superpowers.

For a moment, the night sky was dyed with color, looking incredibly brilliant and dazzling, like an exceptionally grand fireworks display.

It also represented the people’s resolve to resist...

Lily Hart couldn’t help but feel nervous for them. Suddenly, her eyes lit up, and she used her Speed Superpower to quickly blend into the crowd.

Frost Shaw and Roman Rowe exchanged a look and sighed helplessly. "Let’s follow her," Frost Shaw said.

Perhaps it was because the Guardian Corps were also deeply dissatisfied with Jason Lynch, but in any case, the defensive line was extremely easy to break. In an instant, dozens of people had surrounded Jason Lynch.

Jason Lynch continued to sneer, looking at the indignant residents with contempt. "Just you lot? Where is the Guardian Corps?!"

"Don’t waste time talking to him! Let’s just get him!" The person who had taken the lead earlier roared again, launching the first attack.

He was a Delayed Ability User. As the name implied, he could target one person and delay their actions—in other words, slow down their movements.

He was only a Second-rank Superpower User, so he could only slow his target down to 85% of their normal speed. The higher a target’s rank was compared to his own, the shorter the duration of the effect.

But on the battlefield, details often decide the outcome. The moment he slowed Jason Lynch down, everyone started unleashing their abilities.

They were all First and Second-rank Superpower Users, so theoretically, they shouldn’t have been able to do much damage to Jason Lynch. But there were just so many of them!

With each person launching an attack, even a god would have been injured. Jason Lynch was forced from offense to defense.

A faint yellow halo enveloped Jason Lynch, negating fifty percent of the damage from all attacks below the Fourth Rank.

Lily Hart also joined in, periodically speeding up and then using her strength superpower to land a solid kick on him.

It was the type of attack that wasn’t very damaging but was extremely humiliating. Even some members of the Guardian Corps took advantage of the chaos to sneak in a kick or two.

One could imagine just how terrible Jason Lynch’s reputation in the base was. Everyone obeyed him on the surface but defied him in their hearts.

Frost Shaw blended into the crowd. He only relaxed after seeing that Lily Hart was completely fine and was even clearly enjoying herself.

He had long since found Jason Lynch unbearable. ’Creating zombies? How could he do something so utterly depraved?!’

As a Seventh-rank Superpower User, he couldn’t tolerate it. Taking advantage of his higher rank and the chaotic scene, he went up and—BAM! BAM!—landed two punches.

They broke straight through Jason Lynch’s defenses. The two punches struck true, sending blood gushing from his nose and staining his collar.

"Yeah! Great hit!" someone yelled, and a wave of cheers erupted instantly. No one was afraid of Jason Lynch holding a grudge.

’With so many people, could he even get back at all of us?!’

"Stop!" Jason Lynch’s furious voice was drowned out by the crowd. No one paid him any mind.

Even if he wanted to fight back, he had no chance of winning against Frost Shaw. It was futile, so he could only mobilize his energy to form a defense.

The one-sided beating lasted for a full five minutes. By the end, Jason Lynch was beaten beyond recognition, barely looking human.

Only then did some members of the Guardian Corps step in to stop it. "Stop hitting him! What are you all doing! How dare you disrespect the Base Commander!"

"I said stop! Everyone stop hitting him! Don’t you know this is the Base Commander?!" one of them said, landing a couple of kicks of his own to vent.

He then frantically gestured with his eyes at the residents, telling them to leave quickly while the Base Commander was still dazed.

The residents who got the hint made a quick escape. Those who didn’t just followed the crowd, all of them pretending like nothing had happened.

’Anyway, with so many residents here, will he even remember who was here when he comes to his senses tomorrow?’

In just a few seconds, the two or three hundred residents who had originally snuck out had dwindled to just a few dozen.

The Guardian Corps shooed away the remaining people and then hastily sent Jason Lynch to the infirmary.

Lily Hart and her two companions hastily left Nutwood Base. After returning to the RV, she plopped down into a chair.

She chugged a large glass of water, threw a punch at the air, and exclaimed with satisfaction, "So satisfying!" A huge smile spread across her face, revealing deep dimples.

Frost Shaw watched her with a smile and sat down as well. He didn’t say anything like, "Don’t be so impulsive next time, you need to be more careful."

He could tell that there had been a few moments back there when he’d felt fluctuations of energy from her, which meant she had only dared to join in because she had the ability to protect herself.

Besides, with him and Roman Rowe around, Jason Lynch was hardly worth mentioning. If it weren’t for his title as Base Commander, they wouldn’t have even given him the time of day.

Roman Rowe, also feeling refreshed in mind and body, exclaimed, "I just get so happy whenever I see Jason Lynch get put in his place!"

The pair started cheerfully discussing how, even for a Sixth-rank Superpower User, an injury like this would keep Jason Lynch bedridden for a few days.

The night grew late. Cheerful laughter echoed from the RV from time to time. Lily Hart was still somewhat immersed in the memory of the brawl from earlier.

Everyone’s goal had been unprecedentedly aligned: beat up Jason Lynch. Since he was appointed by Central Command, they couldn’t kill him.

So, they all went in with the intention of crippling or maiming him. Plus, since he was a Sixth-rank Superpower User with a body far stronger than a normal person’s, no one pulled their punches.

With all the excitement, it was already approaching eleven o’clock. Lily Hart was full of energy, her mouth chattering away nonstop.

Frost Shaw and Roman Rowe dutifully kept her company, chatting along. Lily Hart even ordered some barbecue and beer.

Spontaneously, the three of them started drinking. Lily Hart raised her beer and clinked it against theirs.

"To this shitty apocalypse!" she said, a bit tipsy but still able to express her thoughts clearly.

"That’s right! To this shitty apocalypse and the big shots!" Roman Rowe was swept up in the mood, downing his drink in one gulp.

"Cheers," Frost Shaw said, a man of few words. He just clinked his glass with theirs, keeping a close eye on Lily Hart.

Seeing her eyes starting to lose focus, he reminded her, "Easy on the drinks."

In a daze, Lily Hart heard someone telling her not to drink anymore. She shot a glare in their direction and pulled her glass to her chest.

Slurring her words, she righteously refused, "No." She clutched the glass, as if afraid someone would snatch it away.

Frost Shaw gave a helpless smile and didn’t press the issue. Roman Rowe was completely in his element, thoroughly enjoying himself. Alcohol, after all, was extremely expensive and hard to find in the apocalypse...
