Chapter 158: Chapter 158: The Controlled Zombies
Surprisingly, the residents of Spring-Watch Base, who were rumored to have terrible tempers, were all quite docile inside the bathhouse. They sat obediently on the sofas and waited quietly in line to bathe.
They ate their fruit obediently, not trying to overstay their time or take more than their share, and dutifully threw their trash in the bins. Few people were even talking; most were just silently eating and waiting.
Lily Hart found it intriguing. ’What could have made them so docile and well-behaved?’ she wondered. With this question in mind, she headed for the front desk.
The Zombie King knew Lily Hart had arrived the second she stepped through the door. Her scent was too rich, too distinct. But he didn’t look up, instead feigning indifference as he busied himself with his work.
Not until Lily Hart was right in front of him did The Zombie King offer a cool greeting. "You’re here."
Lily Hart rested a hand on the countertop and asked curiously, "How come they’re so obedient? No trouble today?"
"They’ve been beaten into submission," The Zombie King said nonchalantly, as if he wasn’t the one who had done it.
"Ohh~" Lily Hart nodded, only half-understanding. ’As expected of The Zombie King. His methods are so direct and decisive. So it’s, ’Not listening, are you? I’ll just beat you until you do!’’
Lily Hart leaned her back against the front desk, resting her elbows casually on the surface behind her. She scanned the customers in the lounge, and just as she’d expected, a few of them had fresh injuries on their faces.
Their eyes, the corners of their mouths, and their noses were slightly swollen. One look was enough to tell they’d been beaten up.
’Domination through absolute force. It works like a charm.’
Now that Frost Shaw, Roman Rowe, and The Zombie King were all Eighth Rank, they were quite a capable team. ’With them around, I don’t have to worry about any bad guys~’
The Zombie King, Owen Warren, looked up, staring at the back of Lily Hart’s head. He couldn’t help but imagine how delicious her brain must be—so tender, so fragrant.
Lost in thought, The Zombie King couldn’t stop himself from reaching for the back of her head. His hand stopped less than five centimeters away. After an internal struggle, he merely plucked a stray strand of her hair from her shoulder.
The strand was glossy black, fine and soft, carrying the faint, clean scent of her shampoo. He carefully rolled it into a tiny ball and, with a nonchalant expression, popped it into his mouth.
He rolled it around with his soft tongue, savoring the sweetness and energy it contained. The volatile energy within him gradually calmed, replaced by a gentle surge of power.
The Zombie King’s eyes lit up, the scarlet red of his pupils almost flaring out of control.
’This woman is a walking treasure trove,’ he thought. ’Last time, just a few of her fingernails were enough to give my rank, which had been stagnant for ages, a slight boost.’
’This time, just a strand of her hair in my mouth has calmed the volatile energy inside me.’
’If I could rip out her tendons and drink her blood, could I leap past the Eighth Rank to the Ninth, or even the Tenth?’ Just the thought made The Zombie King’s own blood boil with excitement.
No one could refuse such immense power, especially when it came with absolute authority and the right to rule.
He wanted it. He had always been pursuing it.
The Zombie King’s gaze on Lily Hart grew scorching hot, wishing he could skin her alive and devour her on the spot.
But just as quickly, his gaze cleared, as if the fantasy had never occurred.
Lily Hart turned back to him. "You’re doing a good job," she praised. "Keep it up." She lingered for another moment before leaving.
She had no idea how fanatical the gaze of The Zombie King behind her was, how he wished his stare could become giant hands or a thick rope to bind her to his side forever.
Lily Hart returned to her RV and went upstairs to wash up. As she was getting ready for bed, she moved to pull the curtains shut out of habit.
Her eyes unintentionally fell upon the base entrance. There were still no members of The Guardian Corps on duty. The main gate was shut tight, and the area was pitch-black, without even a single searchlight on.
’This base is really stingy with its electricity and manpower.’
The convenience store, hotel, and bathhouse were all closing for the night. You could say the entire area was exceptionally dark.
Lily Hart looked away, about to draw the curtains, when she vaguely noticed some sort of commotion in front of the base gate.
A light would flash on from time to time, only to be quickly extinguished, as if someone were playing with a flashlight.
She focused her gaze, concentrating the energy in her body into her eyes. Her vision gradually sharpened and cleared.
Outside the base gate were over a hundred zombies. It looked like they were in some kind of dispute, pushing and shoving one another.
It wasn’t just zombies; there were humans, too. Lily Hart’s curiosity was piqued, and she stared intently.
A dozen or so humans had formed a loose circle around the hundred-odd zombies, and each person held a small bell.
When the bells rang, the zombies moved. When the bells stopped, the zombies stopped too.
’Can those bells control zombies?’ was Lily Hart’s initial theory. It was just a shame her RV was too far away for her to hear them speak.
Then, the dozen or so humans scattered, each leading a group of about ten zombies away.
With the bells in their hands, they only needed to give a gentle shake, and the zombies would follow obediently. They were incredibly docile and wouldn’t suddenly try to bite anyone.
Lily Hart watched them lead the zombies away to different locations. ’How strange,’ she thought. ’Can they really control zombies?’
’If that were really possible, would humanity still be suffering so much?’
Seeing that it wasn’t too late, Lily Hart turned and headed downstairs. Without even changing out of her pajamas, she knocked on the door of the bathhouse.
The main group had relocated to Spring-Watch Base, so of course The Zombie King had to follow along. After all, his ultimate target was Lily Hart.
So, he had abandoned his minions and gotten himself a room in the bathhouse to use as a bedroom. Right now, he was lying on the bed, toying with the strand of Lily Hart’s hair.
Caught off guard by the sudden knock, The Zombie King was a little dazed. It took him a moment to process the sound before he got up to open the door.
Through the glass in the door, The Zombie King could clearly see Lily Hart. For some reason, the corners of his mouth curled up automatically.
Her hair was unbound, tumbling down her back. She wore a cute bunny pajama set that revealed her fair, straight legs. She had on slippers, and in The Zombie King’s eyes, even her ten toes looked adorable.
Even from several meters away and through a glass door, he could smell her sweet, soft scent, and his heart pounded with wild joy.
The Zombie King opened the door, his face a blank mask. "What is it?" he asked coolly.
In reality, his hands were clenched so tightly behind his back that his nails were digging into his palms. He was using every ounce of his willpower to keep from grabbing her and taking a bite.
Lily Hart beckoned to him. "Come with me," she whispered.
’Psycho. Does she think I’m that Frederick Shaw kid?’ The Zombie King’s face was a mask of disdain, but his legs betrayed him and started moving.
He followed her obediently, despising himself all the while. Then he quickened his pace to walk shoulder-to-shoulder with her.
"If you have something to say, just say it. Stop with the games," The Zombie King said coldly.
"What’s the rush?" Lily Hart rolled her eyes at him, pressing her back to the bathhouse wall as she crept forward carefully.
The Zombie King fell silent but continued to swagger along as if he owned the place.
Lily Hart yanked him back. "Why are you being so brazen?" she hissed. "Get over here."
He had no choice but to copy her, pressing himself against the wall. Like a pair of thieves, they crept around to the back of the bathhouse.
"So what is it?" The Zombie King asked impatiently. He stared at the back of her head and unconsciously licked his lips.
Lily Hart said, "Shh!" Then she pointed. "Look over there. See? Zombies and humans, right?"
The Zombie King looked over with extreme reluctance. ’Hmph.’ With his power, he could see perfectly clearly in the dark.
There were indeed zombies and humans. He snorted. "What? You want to save them? I’m not helping."
Lily Hart shook her head. "No. Look closer," she said, her tone dead serious.
