Chapter 172: Chapter 172: A Wake-Up Call
Several rows of shipping containers were parked by the shore, with many large trucks behind them.
The Audi had stopped because at least a dozen zombies were swarming the container terminal platform, and the people inside didn’t dare get out.
"Mom, let’s drive over and go straight around to the back." Xie Ning’s eyes swept over the area, and she had already spotted a large shipping container that could fit the RV.
The height of her personal little Space had increased considerably.
Just storing a single RV would be a huge waste of vertical space.
’If I put the RV inside a shipping container and then stack the containers...’
’The filthy RV wouldn’t contaminate the food in my Space, and I wouldn’t have to worry about losing it and being forced to make the journey back on foot.’
Her mind made up, Xie Ning urged her mother to drive.
Song You’ai, of course, had no objections. She could tell her daughter was planning something big, and as a mother, she had to be supportive.
Xie Ning was already immersed in her personal little Space, moving all the boxes, bags, and other items originally piled in the center over to the sides.
’The height really has increased quite a bit. Now that I’ve stacked all the instant noodle boxes, I feel like I’ve freed up at least two-thirds of the floor area.’
Meanwhile, the dog-hugging couple in the Audi were pressed against the windows, watching the mother and daughter in astonishment.
"They went down?"
The woman couldn’t help but laugh. "Someone’s volunteering to clear out the zombies for us. Honey, let’s just wait here."
The man’s eyes were also filled with delight. "Once they’ve lured all those zombies to the back, we can go down."
This small container terminal at Ta Lake was pitifully tiny compared to the main canal terminal.
Xie Ning eyed the terminal, her mind already racing with ideas.
Unfortunately, the main canal terminal was too far away; she would have to wait for a future opportunity.
The two of them drove down onto the platform. Xie Ning coldly watched several ordinary zombies rush toward them. Metal Spikes suddenly erupted from the backs of their heads, dispatching them one by one.
The zombies were all low-Level; they didn’t even have Crystal Cores in their heads.
Xie Ning cursed her bad luck under her breath. After that, she couldn’t even be bothered to kill them and just told her mom to drive on.
However, this unexpected move of theirs had consequences for the dog-hugging couple.
The woman sat in her car, her face twisting in displeasure. "Why didn’t they get out and clear the zombies? Are they just going to let them stand there roaring?"
The man looked just as displeased. He frowned at the few scattered zombies on the platform ahead. "We’ll go take care of them."
If they had known, they would have followed the RV down earlier instead of being stuck in their current predicament.
"How am I supposed to kill zombies?" the woman shrieked, clutching her dog tightly. "You’re the man, you go kill them! Why are you trying to drag me into this?"
Her words made the man’s anger flare, but he managed to suppress it. "Fine, fine. You drive. I’ll get out and kill the zombies."
By this time, Song You’ai had already driven around behind a block of shipping containers.
Xie Ning leaped from the vehicle and decisively dealt with four or five zombified dockworkers. Her eyes landed on a container in front of her, about twelve square meters in size.
’More than enough space for the RV.’
The container was half-full of cargo, with the other half piled up by the roadside. The zombie apocalypse must have broken out before they could finish unloading.
Xie Ning hopped up onto the pile of goods, tore open a box, and found... a stack of baby diapers.
She was about to toss them aside when her mother quickly reached out to take the box. "Let’s keep these. Keep them."
"Let’s keep all of them," her mother urged. "Can your little Space fit them?"
"It’s useless stuff."
"Who says it’s useless? We might need it later."
Without another word, Xie Ning transferred the entire shipping container into her personal little Space.
Once it was inside, the hundred-odd boxes of diapers within the container could be retrieved at will with a mere sweep of her spiritual power.
Xie Ning mentally tested putting the RV inside the container and found there was plenty of clearance on all sides. She could move it in and out at will without any risk of scraping it, which greatly improved her mood.
Song You’ai watched the RV disappear from right beside her. She merely gaped in surprise, but her heart remained relatively calm.
She’d already realized that the "little Space" her daughter mentioned was, in fact, not little at all.
But her daughter kept calling it a "little Space," so she wasn’t foolish enough to contradict her in front of others. It was enough for her to know the truth.
"Daughter, get these diapers too." Song You’ai, who had taken a particular liking to the diapers, urged her daughter while pointing at the hundreds of boxes piled by the roadside.
Resigned, Xie Ning could only transfer the items into her little Space.
"Mom, be careful. A zombie could jump out from behind the containers," Xie Ning warned before running off to investigate the others.
The next eight or nine containers she opened were all filled with products from a major cosmetics brand.
Xie Ning was completely uninterested.
Even before the apocalypse, she had rarely used cosmetics, at most applying some moisturizer or body lotion during the fall and winter.
Looking at the boxes of face masks, toners, serums, facial cleansers, sunscreen sprays, and so on made her head spin.
Beside those were another five or six containers of cosmetics, their contents even more dizzying. Xie Ning had no interest in checking them one by one.
Song You’ai ran up, grabbed a box of face masks, and gasped. "Whoa! This brand is crazy expensive! A single one of these masks costs over a thousand! Take it, take it all! These will be rarities in the future. What are you just standing there for? It’s a waste not to take what’s free!"
Resigned, Xie Ning gave a mental "wave" and swept the dozen or so large shipping containers before her into her little Space.
It was only then that she truly appreciated just how not-so-little her personal little Space had become.
Although the floor space was only about a hundred square meters, its incredible height more than made up for it.
Fifteen shipping containers filled with various cosmetics, stacked on top of each other, didn’t even reach the ceiling.
Song You’ai stood with her mouth agape. After a long moment, she finally let out a breath. "Daughter, have you noticed something?"
"What have you discovered now?" Xie Ning asked, amused.
Song You’ai clicked her tongue. "When you take things, you don’t have to physically touch them. Unlike that dimwit Xiao Xian. He has to be in physical contact with something to store it."
Her words were like a splash of cold water, snapping Xie Ning out of a daze. She stared blankly at her mother, speechless for a long moment.
"Mom, you’re brilliant!" Xie Ning said, excitedly gripping her mother’s hand. "I never even noticed."
Song You’ai chuckled. "It’s like they say: sometimes you’re too close to the situation to see it clearly."
"Watch out!" Xie Ning yanked her mother behind her as a Metal Spike shot into the brain of a lunging zombie.
"Let’s go check over there."
With a tacit understanding, the two of them deliberately left the first row of containers untouched, using it to block the view of the couple in the Audi.
The mother-daughter pair went around to the back and killed a dozen or so wandering zombies.
Song You’ai opened a container door and stared at the foreign letters on it, muttering to herself.
"Textiles," Xie Ning said after a quick glance. "Gloves, socks, blankets, woven silk, belts, rope, and things like that."
