The trip to the deeper sections of the facility passed without incident. Charlotte and her family were finally beginning to understand that the explanations they'd been given earlier had barely scratched the surface of what this place truly was. Naturally, they had no idea just how massive the facility was when Rupert and Victor first described it to them.
Back then, it had sounded like nothing more than a large underground base. Victor and Rupert hadn't had much to add beyond the basics: it was a megastructure designed to contain, study, and monitor anomalies. In more specific cases, the organization was also responsible for protecting certain areas that contained anomalous components, or were anomalous themselves.
It was that last part that earned several confused looks from Charlotte and her family: "Wait... how can a place be an anomaly?" Charlotte asked, frowning.
Victor opened his mouth to answer but hesitated for a moment. He couldn't really blame them for being confused. To be honest, he wasn't particularly fond of that definition himself. In his mind, it was much easier to accept the existence of creatures, supernatural entities, or objects that defied the laws of physics than it was to imagine an entire location being classified as an anomaly.
Victor wasn't a scientist: "In simple terms... they're dangerous places where weird things just happen" he replied with a shrug: "Places where the normal rules of reality don't seem to work properly"
"That doesn't really explain much" Charlotte's mother commented.
"Exactly" Victor agreed with a tired smile: "Welcome to the club"
Rupert let out a brief snort of amusement without even slowing his pace: "Believe me, that's basically the same explanation some researchers give after spending years studying the subject"
The answer earned a few skeptical expressions, but nobody pressed further. The more they learned about the facility, the more everyone was beginning to realize that some things simply couldn't be explained in a straightforward way.
Eventually, they reached the elevator section, and Charlotte's family reacted with almost unanimous disbelief. After crossing a large portion of the military base, they found themselves standing inside an enormous military hangar that, at first glance, appeared completely ordinary.
There was nothing particularly impressive about it. Just concrete, metal, a few parked vehicles, and equipment arranged with the efficiency one would expect from a military installation. Nothing suggested that the place concealed anything extraordinary.
Which was exactly why the surprise hit so hard when a gigantic elevator platform was revealed in the center of the hangar. The silence that followed was immediate. Charlotte's eyes followed the massive metal structure as it slowly descended, revealing a shaft that appeared to stretch miles beneath the surface.
"You've got to be kidding me..." she muttered, leaning forward slightly as she tried to see the bottom: "There's a secret elevator inside a military hangar that leads to a gigantic underground facility?"
She crossed her arms and grinned: "Okay, now this actually feels like a government organization that deals with weird stuff" Nobody answered.
Charlotte glanced around: "So... is this the famous Area 51?" Once again, silence: "Right, got it. Classified information and all that" Victor didn't even turn his head. Rupert seemed far too occupied with his own thoughts to care. Meanwhile, Charlotte's parents were simply stunned.
Fortunately, the elevator had enough room to accommodate everyone at once, eliminating the need for a second trip. Not that Victor would have allowed the family to be separated in a situation like this, but it still made the journey smoother.
As the elevator descended through the countless underground levels of the facility, the soft hum of the motors and the cold glow of the lights embedded in the metallic walls were practically the only sounds present. Curiously, Charlotte seemed to be the only person who wasn't feeling the weight of the situation. If anything, she looked strangely excited.
Her eyes wandered around the elevator's interior with obvious curiosity, studying the control panels and level indicators as though she were about to visit some fascinating attraction rather than a secret facility dedicated to the containment and study of anomalies.
Considering there was a possibility that she herself might be one of the entities the government kept under observation, her reaction was, at the very least, unusual.
Victor watched her quietly for a few moments. Maybe the girl simply possessed an unusually strong mind for someone her age. Maybe she was coping the best way she knew how, turning fear into curiosity. It was a plausible explanation.
Rupert, on the other hand, had a much simpler theory: "She's weird" Rupert muttered. That was it.
No complicated explanations. No elaborate psychological analysis. Just weird. And, if Victor was being completely honest, while watching Charlotte practically struggle to contain her excitement at the prospect of entering a gigantic underground facility full of government secrets, he had to admit that Rupert's theory was making far more sense than he would have liked.
The tale has been illicitly lifted; should you spot it on Amazon, report the violation.
Shaking his head, Victor pushed aside the lingering thoughts occupying his mind and focused on the immediate task at hand. Fortunately, the strange atmosphere inside the elevator didn't last long.
If there was one thing he could praise about the organization, it was their absurdly fast elevators, capable of crossing dozens of meters of depth in mere seconds. The faint mechanical hum came to a stop, and a moment later the doors opened with a soft pneumatic hiss. Beyond them stretched wide corridors with an immaculate appearance.
The metallic walls subtly reflected the white lighting installed overhead, while the polished floor looked as though it had just been cleaned. There was no dirt, no cracks, and no sign of wear, only the cold, organized feeling of a facility built to last for decades.
Victor and Rupert stepped out first, followed by Charlotte's family. As expected, it took Charlotte less than five seconds to start bombarding them with questions: "Are these walls actually made of metal?" she asked, running her fingers along the smooth surface as she walked: "And how did you guys even manage to build a place this huge underground?"
Without waiting for an answer, she immediately launched into another question: "Also, I kind of thought it'd be more like a zoo down here or something. You know... lots of creatures in cages and all that. But so far it's just hallways"
Rupert let out another amused snort: "I'm glad to know your first impression of the organization is that we run an underground zoo"
"Well, you capture monsters, don't you?" Charlotte shot back immediately: "So it's not exactly a ridiculous comparison"
"When you put it that way, it actually makes a certain amount of sense" Rupert admitted with a shrug.
Victor shot the two of them a sideways glance before answering: "Yes, the walls are primarily made from reinforced metal alloys. As for the size of the facility... let's just say the organization has enough resources to undertake projects that most governments would consider impossible"
Charlotte's eyes widened slightly: "That answered maybe half of my question... What about the monsters?"
"Not all anomalies are kept in this section" Victor explained as they continued walking through the corridors: "In fact, most of them are housed in much deeper sectors with their own security classifications. What you're seeing right now is only a small portion of the facility"
Charlotte looked down the corridor ahead and then at the countless doors and passageways branching off along the route: "A small portion?" she murmured. For the first time since arriving, she fell silent for several seconds as she tried to imagine the true scale of the place: "Okay... that was way scarier than any answer I was expecting"
Victor ignored Charlotte's endless stream of questions and simply continued through the facility's sprawling corridors without showing any intention of responding. The rhythmic sound of his footsteps echoed through the sterile environment, blending with the faint hum of the ventilation systems hidden within the walls.
Charlotte, meanwhile, found herself torn between curiosity and frustration. She kept glancing at Victor, hoping to squeeze at least some kind of explanation out of him, while her parents took in their surroundings with a mixture of fascination and unease.
After several minutes of walking, the group finally stopped in front of a sturdy-looking door. Mounted on it was a perfectly polished metal plaque that read: Director of Operations - Emily Parker
Victor studied the door for a brief moment before raising a hand and knocking twice, softly, yet firmly. A few seconds later, a woman's voice came from the other side, calm but authoritative: "Come in"
Almost simultaneously, the click of the electronic lock echoed through the hallway. Without hesitation, Victor turned the handle and stepped inside, leading Charlotte and her parents into the room. Contrary to what they had expected from one of the facility's highest-ranking officials, the office looked surprisingly ordinary.
It was spacious and well-organized, though scattered reports, documents, and folders covered several side tables and nearby cabinets, hinting at an intense workload. Large bookshelves lined portions of the walls, filled with carefully cataloged files, while a skylight overhead bathed the room in natural light.
Behind her desk, Emily Parker sat with her usual impeccable posture. Her eyes moved across several open documents spread out before her, completely absorbed in her work.
Beside her stood Laura, leaning over the desk as she reviewed a stack of files, occasionally pointing out specific details for Emily to examine.
The two appeared to be engaged in a quiet professional discussion, one that was interrupted only by the visitors' arrival. As soon as they noticed the group, both Emily and Laura looked up almost simultaneously, directing their attention toward Charlotte and her family.
"Anything new since I got back?" Victor asked, immediately drawing everyone's attention. Resting one hand against the side of the desk, he shrugged: "I know you would've already told me if something had happened" he continued: "But I figured I'd ask anyway. Just in case something got lost in communication while I was on my way here"
His words were met with a subtly weary look from Emily. The dark circles beneath her eyes and the stiffness in her posture made it obvious she hadn't rested in quite some time. Without answering right away, she simply shook her head and glanced toward one of the monitors beside her.
Streams of data continued scrolling across the screen without any noticeable changes. The silence that followed lasted only a few seconds, but it felt much longer to everyone in the room. Then Emily shifted her attention toward Charlotte.
The movement was subtle, yet enough for the girl's parents to notice immediately. Almost at the same time, both of them placed their hands on their daughter's shoulders. The grip was gentle, but heavy with concern. Charlotte could feel their fingers trembling ever so slightly as they tried to hide the anxiety written across their faces.
Emily noticed the reaction. She let out a quiet, tired sigh before finally responding: "Unfortunately, no" There was a frustration in her voice that was difficult to conceal: "The last fluctuation we recorded matches perfectly with the moment you entered the community center. After that..." She paused briefly, searching for the right words: "Nothing. Just static, for lack of a better term"
Emily's fingers drummed absentmindedly against the desk for a moment as a thoughtful expression crossed her face. Her eyes studied Charlotte for several seconds before she finally spoke again: "Charlotte Whitmore, correct?"
Charlotte hesitated for a moment before confirming with a small nod. Emily nodded back: "Right. In that case, come with me" She stepped away from her workstation and began heading toward the door: "There's someone I'd like you to meet"
